Hello.

I just saw this on release Notes of Vuescan 7.6.71:
"Made Linux version of VueScan free for personal use"

Does this mean that the support of the Linux version will become less
reactive than the Windows version ? (supporting users that didn't pay
wouldn't be commercially logic)

A long ago I paid for Vuescan and its support, so I'm wondering if
it's the beginning of the end ...

This wasn't altruistic - it's an attempt to make more money.
I want VueScan to be widely used on Linux, and make my money
from people doing one of the following:

1) Paying for the Professional Edition on Linux
2) Paying for multi-user licenses on Linux
3) Paying for the Windows and Mac OS X versions

If this doesn't work well in the next month or two, I'll stop
making the Linux version free for personal use.

Give it a bit longer. It could take longer than a couple of months for
the word to get out.

As a Linux Vuescan user, I have been advertising Vuescan, not because I
specifically want to help you out, but because I think it is the best
tool for the job. I will make a point of advertising a bit more
aggressively, at least to several friends who have expressed an interest
in going digital but have not done it yet.

It sometimes takes a while for Linux users to catch on to something, and
of course there is the reluctance to use software for which the code is
not available. I share that reluctance, but I make an exception for
Vuescan.

I paid for it, but have never used it because I was unable
to get a Linux installed that could talk to the scanner on
my Adaptec 2906 SCSI interface. I had the "sg" module, but
no evidence of the scanner in the boot sequence or /proc.
At present it isn't a big deal, I've moved the card and the
scanner over to a PowerMac G4 where I can run VueScan or Fotolook.

On the other hand, on the same hardware an old version of NetBSD
had no trouble reporting the scanner. It's too bad VueScan won't
run on NetBSD or FreeBSD (I assume it won't anyway, on the theory
that its device access would be more than the Linux emulation could
deal with.) I know they're less popular, but they sure have worked
better for me.

I've been told that VueScan works fine on *BSD. I think the trick
is to use the sg SCSI driver emulator.

Sorry to jump in off the main topic. I'm learning to use Linux. Vuescan is
working fine and giving me good scans but I'm having trouble getting Gimp 1.3
to produce decent prints on my Epson 1290 (Banding unless I use much higher
resolution - (painfully slow) than I use when printing in Windows). Using Epson
papers and inks and getting good prints from the scans in the 'other' OS. Any
pointers I hope Ed does continue to support Linux - we need more like him
writing for Linux.
