AFAIK you cannot make any changes to .uk records online. The only way to do
it is via Nominet's printed form.

Errr... no. The only things you need the printed form for are initial
registration / renewal, change of registrant and surrender.

Anything else can be updated electronically by the tagholder.

Since when do you need the form for registrations or renewals?
What other data does .uk record hold apart the registrant's particulars?
(Not including the tag, DNS servers and registration/renewal dates.)

We allow you to update admin, billing, tech contact details as well as name
servers for .uk and .com etc domains on our control panel.

The registrant data for a .uk domain has to be changed directly with Nominet
but all of the other data is maintained via the online cp.

I can thoroughly recommend Domain City. I use them for all of the 84
domains that I own or manage for clients.

John and his team do a very good job and provide excellent service.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on a majorly improved owner details
page for UK2.NET. This will give you complete control over owner details for
.uk, .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz, subject of course to the restrictions
of the registrar (i.e. you can't change the owner this way, and for com, net
and org you can't change the email address either).

The funky thing is that you can change the details of many domains at the
same time, which isn't something I've seen other companies do (correct me if
I'm wrong, please).

Incidentally, owner changes didn't work for .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz
domains at UK2 before because Joker, the registrar we use for those domains,
didn't have owner change requests available to us (or at least none that
worked). They've finally fixed their bugs this week, and that's the reason
it took us so long. Apologies for the delay, but it was completely out of
our hands.

News to me ? I thought there were restrictions within the first 60
days on changes, but I've a few domains registered elsewhere and am
fairly sure I've been able to alter the registrant's mail address
(me in most cases).

yes, standard facility on a registration firm I've used costing $7.75
per year for .com/net/org Peter M.

only works with generic domains not .uk

Ah, but not with Joker, because they think an email address is special, and
requires paying them one year's renewal for them to do a "transfer".

Feh.

Hi Chris,

Im not sure if we're the company you're referring to (as we're in this exact
situation with a customer), or possibly someone else.

This is unfortunatly the case, and we're as unhappy about it as everyone
else, they do keep promising to fix the situation.

Sam's info is slightly out of date, as they now will change it for free, but
it still requires stupid amounts of pointless paperwork to achieve it.

They have told us they intend to automate this shortly, although no set date
has been announced.

We are still considering our options whether to continue with Joker or
possibly move to someone like OpenSRS who seem to be far more efficient.

Unfortunatly shifting 10000+ domains between registrars is not an easy task
:)

Glad to see they've become unsuckful in at least one aspect - actually, it's
only last week that they actually allowed people to update their contact
details via the email system, as opposed to logging in to the web site and
doing it manually.

It took a year to get owner address changes sorted out.

We've got an order of magnitude more, and it's even nastier in that case.
And in any case, you can only really shift domains between registrars if
you've actually been paid the one-year renewal (unless, of course, you're
rich and brave enough to bite the cost up front and hope like hell that
people renew their domains). But if the customer pays up at the last minute,
it will be too late to do a transfer, so you'll have to stay with Joker or
lose the domain. (Witness the problems freeparking had a while ago -
http://www.freeparking.co.uk/default.asp?f=10#23 is a potted summary.)
