I upgraded an NT40 PC to IE6 from IE5.0. Now, when the
browser opens, the speaker emmits static for 15-20 minutes
and then stops. The wav file is still running, just not
making static.

Muting wav on the volume controls stops the noise but
doesn't fix the problem. Anyone know which file might be
corrupted and need to be replaced?

Is that all you updated? If you got any patches from Windows Update
site they might have included driver changes unless you disabled them.

In that case the fix would be on the manufacturer's support site.

I am having the same problem on a few of my machines as
well. It happens on NT4 and 2000 Clients, they are all
dells using the same image for NT and 2K, but after the
upgrade from IE5 to IE6 a very few get the noise from the
speakers. Has anyone come across a reason or found a fix
for this. Thanks

I had the same problem I thought it was my sound card, glad to find out that
it isn't. I'm not sure if I done anything but the problem is gone now.

Try replacing the file start.wav with an older (yes, that's older) version.
This is the file responsible for the click noise in IE. There is a Technet
article which somewhat addresses the issue but it's wrong in stating SP1
fixes the problem. It should state sp1 causes the problem
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319303).
