I have 2 Windows 2000 Advanced Servers setup with WLBS (NLB - Network Load
Balancing) using dual nics on each server. NLB is configured so that 1 NIC
on each server has the same IP address to do the Load Balancing and the
second NIC has a different IP address and is used to for normal dedicated
traffic just to that server. This is a standard and recommended setup from
Microsoft. I can load balance any service on these two servers, HTTP, FTP,
and even Terminal Services running the RDP protocol, so i know Load Balancing
works.

I have installed Citrix Metaframe 1.8 for Windows 2000 and configure load
balancing for the ICA protocol on port 1494, and that works. However i get
ICA Browser problems using port 1604 because the ICA Browser service binds to
BOTH NICs on each server and therefore is it is being load balanced on the
NIC that shares the common IP address. This is what is causing the problem,
because at some point one server or the other will list the load balanced IP
address as its primary address. I can see this using the "query
server"
command from citrix. When this happens the "Publish Application
Manager"
will stop working because is thinks the ICA Browser is not running or hung
because the ICA packets to that common address are being load balanced and
going to the other server.

I have tried all the following:
1) Changed the binding order of the NICs so that the NLB NICs are listed last
2) Changed the LANA bindings using the lanacfg.exe from Microsoft so that the
NLB NICs are listed last.
3) Found the
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\TerminalServer\lanatable\{nic card
SID}\lanaid setting and adjusted that so the NLB NICs are listed last.

**I was hoping by doing all the above it would force the ICA Browser to bind
correctly to the first NIC listed which is not the NLB NIC. It had no
affect.

4) Tried to configure a separate ICA protocol bound to each adapter
separately
and disable it for the NLB NIC's. But that doesn't work because then ICA
does not work on port 1494 and so i can't Load Balance ICA, which is what i
want to do.

5) I have enabled ICA Browser logging and went through the log. I can see in
the log the Master Browser election take place and eventually the common IP
address wins the election. I have not been able to determine where any
RELEVANT SETTINGS <-meaning things that will help fix my problem) for this
service are stored.

6) Using netstat -an i can see "UDP 0.0.0.0:1604 *:*"
which i
believe shows that NO Single IP address is listening on the 1604 port, but
that all IP addresses are. I need to change that to be just the dedicated IP
and not the Load balanced IP.

I believe that if i could find any of the following i could fix my problem.
1) Binding settings for the ICA Browser to the NICS.
2) Port settings for the ICA Browser to change the port from 1604 to
something
else for the common IP. For example: I set one to 1605 and the other to 1606
and they won't share information thus they won't choose the common IP as the
Master Browser.

Alternatively, has anyone been able to use NLB on Windows 2000 to
successfully
load balance Citrix Metaframe with the ICA Browser? If so how did you do it?
With a Single NIC Dual IP? Dual NIC and Single IP's (like me)? Did you just
disable the ICA Browser? If so how do you Publish your applications?

Any and all relevant information would be helpfull.
Thank you in advanced.

I think the problem here is you are trying to load balance load balancing -
I am assuming you are using Load Balancing with your MF - or are you trying
to use NLB rather than use (buy) MF Load Balancing?
