Announcing ... a new website.

From the guy who brought you the Portacle and the Movie Magic website,
I bring you:

Magic Rarities: http://www.flaminio.com/magic/rarities.html

Inspired by the pioneering work of Marcus Malden, Blaz Antonic, stu55
(self-proclaimed god of promos), and others, I have attempted to
gather up all the information I could find about promos, prizes,
bonuses, and other assorted Magic cards that do not belong to a
specific set.

Please stop by and check it out! Comments and criticisms to me
(b...@flaminio.com).

Magic Rarities: http://www.flaminio.com/magic/rarities.html

While visiting flaminio.com, be sure to check out my other fine sites:

Portacle: http://www.flaminio.com/portacle/

Movie Magic: http://www.flaminio.com/magic/movies.html

Thanks!

I've been trying to track down a pic for a *long* time. No luck yet.

Site looks great Bob. I can think of one card which was missed of the
top of my head. The promo version of Flare which was given out to DCI
Legends members. I don't know where to find it's artwork, but a friend
has one and I'll see if he can bring it when he comes to my place to
play tonight.

As far as the art for Proposal, well Quinton Hoover reads here
occasionally, so you can look up the archives and email him. Maybe he'd
be willing to post it.(as long as it's ok with the Garfields of course)

Supposedly there are only 9 in existance, and all of those were just printed
on paper, and glued on some other card. That's all I've heard.

I just emailed you a picture of a 6x9 promo not on your list. The card is
Incoming!, a promo from GenCon 98 (see below). Also, I have a picture of
the foil City or Traitors sold on ebay some time ago. I'm not sure if your
counting foil test cards on your list, though.
Anyhow, it's a nice site! I like it! :-)

Thanks!

I tried to e-mail you, Thomas, but I got a bounce message that said
your mailbox is full.

On that French site, where did you find the pictures? I looked around,
and couldn't find any (lots of text, no pix).

The test cards look nice, and should be included.

The only cards I'm not going to include are errors and misprints.

Thanks for telling me about my email! I woulda' never known I wasn't
getting messages!
As for Incoming!, I can't find that URL for that site, anymore. Here's
another site with similar information:
http://www.phyrexia.com/cardsets/checklists/Misc.shtml
It says that Incoming was promo for unglued, and sayes nothing about being
an oversized card, though. No pics, though. Can you email, or post the
other URL?
Thanks.

Will you be including Vanguard cards?

Any chance you can get pics of the cards Rosewater created for the
Duelist Invitationals for 1999 and 2000? I'd like to see those.

I don't have any pictures for them (and I'm not sure the pictures are
that impressive, anyway), but I do plan on putting up a page for those
cards.

(Do you happen to have the power/toughness for the Cloudchaser Monk?)

What cards did he create?

Lots of them. From reading the tournament reports, it seems Mark
Rosewater made up a bunch of different cards for the Invitational tournaments
so that players would be faced with cards they've never seen before,
just as a test of their skill. The only name I can still remember is
Avalanche of Squirrels. From players' comments I think the cards he made were
REALLY crappy (like GGG5 for a 4/4 vanilla creature) but it was in the
context of a specially-created environment where only very specific cards
(as in "real" cards that were released in previous sets) were given to the
players to draft from, and all of those were so weak that a 4/4 for GGG5
was actually playable. I recall Dracoplasm being named as the biggest
baddest creature in one of these Invitationals.
Anyway, other people can probably add more, but I just thought
I'd stick my nose in. :) (Note: I have no intention to slam Dracoplasm,
just repeating others' comments, so any relatives/friends/fans/etc of
Dracoplasm in the audience should kindly keep their mail bombs to themselves.)

Avalanche of Squirrels is a 4GG vanilla creature with Echo, if you can
believe that.
Here's a link to all cards used in the last Duplicate Sealed complete
with text for the made-up ones.
http://www.wizards.com/sideboard/article.asp?x=INVITATIONAL9900/duplicatecards

I remember the Invitational, the Duplicate Sealed is an interesting
format.I personally can't wait to see how this year's Champions' Auction
goes.According to at least 1 participant(can't remember who offhand) the
Academy deck isn't winning at the rate one might expect, losing
consistently to Maher's Oath deck or something.

Of course,Extended is a much broader format, so even the most broken
deck in Standard's history should still find a challenge I'd say.

On a related note, perhaps if one is interested in getting pics of the
cards an e-mail to one the more net-friendly participants would do the
trick,assuming they got copies.

I' ll write to a couple if anyone would want me to try.

Apprentice lists it as 2/2. I can't guarantee the accuracy of that,
but every other p/t listing for the specially created cards for both
Invitationals is the same as those of Dave DeLaney's list on his Cards

I've got them listed in my 'irregular cards' webpages - see
http://panacea.phys.utk.edu/~dbd/NFd/d.l.irregular . The 1999 DI cards
were somewhat more 'serious' than the 2000 DI cards... Both lists are copied
straight out of the relevant Duelist or TopDeck, essentially.

Wow. Within four days, a little under 3000 people have visited the site.
Is this more due to the fact that it was posted at mtgnews.com, or that it
was posted to the NG's that it was posted to?

Anyhow, it'd have been cool if you'd created a mirror site, and then posted
that site on mtgnews.com, and see which one got more hits. That would have
actually been rather wierd...

Dude, tell me about it. I had no idea how popular it would be. I had
to ring up my ISP to get a special, temporary bandwidth extension
until the dust settles.

It's almost entirely due to the exposure on MTGnews. Nobody reads
usenet anymore...

If it was a site that allowed more bandwidth, it would probably get
more hits. My site was down for hours when my bandwidth blew out.

Even worse, Avalanche of Squirrels (a 3/3 for 8GGGG if you paid
the echo) can't attack if a Goblin or Insect is in play.

Too.. Many.. Words 2WW Enchant Creature
Enchanted creature's text box is blank. If
enchanted creature's power or toughness is
undefined, treat it as 0.

How would this work? Would this simply remove any abilities a
creatur has? Or, would a creature keep the abilities normally
written on the card but be immune to spells like Crystal Spray
from Invasion? Hmmm... That second idea could make for an
interesting card...

Crystal Spray 2U Instant
Change the text of target spell or permanent by replacing
all instances of one color word or basic land type with
another until end of turn. Draw a card.

Undercover Disguise 4U Enchant Creature
You may play Undercover Disguise any time you could play an
instant. As Undercover Disguise comes into play, choose a
creature type. Enchanted creature is that type.

I like this card. "I'll Disguise your Avalanche of Squirrels.
It's now a Goblin." ;-)

Bunch of Elephants 7GG Creature - Elephants 8/8
Trample
Sacrifice a permanent: Prevent all damage Bunch of Elephants
would deal this turn. Any player may play this ability.

And I love this card!

A bit stronger than Humble in most respects, except that it doesn't change
the power and toughness to 0/1.

> creatur has? Or, would a creature keep the abilities normally

It would remove any abilities, and it could get rid of "~this~ is a
[foo]." or "This creature has power and toughness equal to [foo]." which
are characteristic-setting text.

They'd lose all text.

Expensive, but it does trample, and if you keep on beating down on your
opponent eventually they will run out of permanents to sacrifice.

Remember the Invasion Spoiler from that MtG e-zine?
Here's a segment of what they said in their "story behind the spoiler"
article:

So that's what a Magic player wants: new cards and spoilers! Over 8,000
people visited Mag2, a day after I'd put that two-color spoiler online. That
was shocking! Especially if you know that there were only 100 who visited
the site in the 2 months prior to the spoiler.

I'm pretty sure that those 8000 people visited it after mtgnews.com put it
up. Makes one wonder how many people a day visit www.mtgnews.com. I do not
even want to begin to imagine - maybee even more than www.wizards.com!
