After Episode 2, it becomes a puzzle to sandwich Episode 3 between the
other five and not break continuity. Here's my attempt to solve the puzzle.

*** SPOILERS FOR EPISODES 2 AND 3 ***

Do not read unless you have already seen Attack of the Clones (AotC).

Do not read unless you want to read speculation about Episode 3.

Plot Outline: Star Wars: Episode 3: The Clone War

This movie is set a few months after Star Wars: Episode 2: Attack of the
Clones, and 20 years before Star Wars: Episode 4: A New Hope.

In chronological order:

- Anakin improves his piloting skills and becomes the greatest star
pilot in the galaxy, as Ben described him in Ep 4.

- Anakin becomes a Jedi Knight. In Ep 4, Ben refers to him as a Jedi
Knight, not as a Padawan learner. Since Anakin is married when he
becomes a Jedi Knight, the Jedi code of celibacy is broken. This
probably represents one of the ways that Anakin brings balance to the
Force.

- Padme and Anakin learn she is pregnant. In Ep 5, when the Emperor
tells Darth Vader of the existence of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader is not
surprised that "Luke Skywalker" exists. He realizes that Luke is his
son. At this early stage of her pregnancy, Anakin and Padme assume that
Padme is carrying just one child. Later, in Ep 6, Darth Vader is
surprised to learn that Luke has a twin, or any sibling at all for that
matter.

- Supreme Chancellor Palpatine declares the existence of the Empire. The
Republic ceases to exist, and is succeeded by the Empire. The Republican
Senate becomes the Imperial Senate, one of the last vestiges of the Old
Republic. The clones become the storm troopers.

- Palpatine becomes Emperor.

- The separatists become the Rebellion.

- The Jedi are joined by the Kamino alien Padawan learner that Obi-Wan
met in Ep 2, the one with the single hair braid, like all Padawans have.
She was not previously known to the Jedi until Obi-Wan made contact
with her. Her master is revealed.

- Finally, the Jedi learn that Emperor Palpatine is Darth Sidious.
Previously, the Jedi had sided with the Republic. Now, instead of siding
with the successor of the Republic, the Empire, now controlled by Darth
Sidious, the Jedi switch sides to the Rebellion.

- Senator Bail Organa sides with the Rebellion against the Empire.

- Under the influence of Emperor Palpatine, who is also Darth Sidious,
Anakin gives in to the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin's motivations are
personal power and a detestation of the democratic process because it
always requires compromise. Anakin leaves the Jedi Knights and enters
into the service of Darth Sidious. Anakin leaves his friend and mentor
Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin becomes Darth Vader. (James Earl Jones is in the
Episode 3 cast.) As Ben Kenobi said in Ep 6, the man that was Anakin
ceases to exist. Darth Vader is outfitted with some new bionic parts.
Over time, more and more of Darth Vader becomes machine, until that
process is stopped at the end of Ep 6.

- Still pregnant, Padme is shocked that Anakin has become Darth Vader.
Darth Vader wants to see Padme, but she avoids him. They are separated
from each other.

- Count Dooku leaves the separatists, who have become the Rebels, and
fights Palpatine for control of the Empire. Dooku loses and Palpatine
wins. Dooku is killed by Darth Vader as revenge for chopping his arm off
in Ep 2.

- Darth Vader helps the Empire track down and kill the Jedi. All are
killed except Obi-Wan and Yoda.

- Boba Fett grows up into a man. In Ep 2, the clones grow up faster than
humans. He probably acquires a disintegrator weapon, since Darth Vader
warns him against using it in Ep 5.

- Boba Fett probably kills Mace Windu as vengeance for his
father/clone/Jango Fett's killing.

- Obi-Wan and Darth Vader have a lightsaber fight. It ends in a draw.

- Darth Vader's blue beam lightsaber ends up in the hands of Obi-Wan.
This is ironic because in Ep 2, Obi-Wan constantly reminds Anakin to
never lose his lightsaber. Darth Vader tells Obi-Wan that he wants his
child to have his lightsaber. In Ep 4, Kenobi gives this lightsaber to
Luke. Kenobi then tells Luke then that his father wanted him to have it.

- Darth Vader constructs a new lightsaber. It has a red beam. He never
loses this lightsaber until the duel with Luke in Ep 6.

- Yoda has a lightsaber duel with the Emperor. It ends in a draw, and
allows Yoda to escape.

- Yoda escapes to the Dagobah system and becomes a loner.

- In a big explosion, all of the lightsabers are destroyed, with the
exceptions of Obi-Wan's lightsaber, the blue beam lightsaber Obi-Wan is
keeping for Luke, and Darth Vader's red beam lightsaber. In Ep 4, Ben's
lightsaber is destroyed in the explosion of the first Death Star. In Ep
5, the blue beam lightsaber is lost forever on Bespin. In Ep 6, Luke's
second lightsaber and Darth Vader's lightsaber are destroyed by the
explosion of the second Death Star. Part of the balance in the Force
that Anakin restores is related to this destruction of the lightsabers.
By the end of Ep 6, all the lightsabers known to exist have been destroyed.

- The Trade Federation and their droids are taken over by the Rebels.
The plans for the Death Star fall into the hands of the Emperor.

- Working with the rebels, Obi-Wan Kenobi is given the rank of general.
Later, in Ep 4, Leia calls him General Kenobi.

- The droid warriors are now under the control of the Rebellion. They
are destroyed, however, by the storm troopers.

- Obi-Wan is renamed Ben. Later, in Ep 4, Ben tells Luke that he has not
been called Obi-Wan since before Luke was born.

- Padme gives birth to a twin boy and girl.

- The Emperor learns that Anakin and Padme have had a child, though the
Emperor knows of only one child. As the ghost of Ben says in Ep 6, the
Emperor would have realized that any child of Anakin Skywalker's would
be a threat to him.

- The Emperor orders Darth Vader to track down Padme Amidala and child.
The order is to either kill them or turn them over to the Emperor.

- Ben helps Padme hide the twins from Darth Vader and the Emperor. The
twins are Leia and Luke. Padme has to choose which of her children to
keep, and which to be separated from. It is a horrible decision to face.
She keeps her daughter Leia. She trusts Ben Kenobi to take care of Luke.

- Padme goes to Darth Vader and confronts him. He notices that she is no
longer pregnant. With tears in her eyes, she looks into his helmetted
face and says, "I remember when you won the pod race. I remember falling
in love with you among the wildflowers of Naboo. I remember when we
faced death on Geonosis. I still love you, Anakin. I know there is still
good in you. I can feel it." Darth Vader pauses to look in her eyes,
then turns away and says in his new, deep voice, "That name......(long
pause as he looks away).....no longer holds any meaning for me." Then he
points a blaster right at her heart, and says, "You should not have
come. I do not know you." She stands there, beseeching him with her dark
brown eyes. Then, he fires. As it turns out, though, the blaster was set
on stun. This mirrors what happens to Leia at the beginning of Ep 4.
Darth Vader lets Captain Panaka take Padme away to safety, and Vader
never tells the Emperor of the confrontation.

- Finally realizing that she married an abusive man, Padme Amidala wants
to divorce Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, but cannot. Any legal move
would result in her location becoming known to the Emperor. Padme blames
herself for Anakin's turn to the Dark Side. Ben counsels her that
falling in love is never an error, and that it is Anakin who is entirely
to blame.

- Padme goes to live secretly at the residence of Bail Organa on
Alderaan. Even if they fell in love, Padme and Bail cannot marry. Padme
is already married and can't get divorced. Padme is wanted by the
Empire, and so is any child she had with Anakin, such as Leia. Padme has
Bail adopt Leia as his child. They keep Leia's biological parentage
secret. Leia is given the family name Organa. Padme continues to be
Leia's mother, but does so secretly.

- Leia is told that Padme is her mother, and that she must keep it a
secret. As Leia described her in Ep 6, Padme is "sad." Leia is raised by
Padme for a few years, then Padme dies, perhaps of heartbreak. Leia is
very young when her mother dies, as she says in Ep 6. Leia is never told
who was her biological father.

- Leia's royal lineage is somehow established while hiding her birth
line. Maybe by the time of Ep 4, she is elected Princess of Alderaan
like her mother was elected Queen of Naboo. Though she is Bail Organa's
adopted child, royal lineage is not established through adoption (at
least here on Earth), and thus her royal lineage could not have been
established through him. So Leia must have been elected Princess by the
time of Ep 4.

- Anakin/Darth Vader apparently tries to recruit Owen Lars to join in
his "crusade," as described by Ben in Ep 4. Owen Lars turns him down.
Otherwise, Ben's lie to Luke about his father is very elaborate, and not
merely a "certain point of view" as Ben's ghost said it was in Ep 6. If
Kenobi has lied from time to time, though, that still fits with his
character. He is a great, though flawed Jedi.

- Young Luke goes to live with Owen Lars and Beru Whitesun on Tatooine.
This is a strange decision, because Darth Vader is ordered to find his
child, and surely he would at least ask Owen and Beru about his child,
or interrogate them, if he was trying to find his child. Darth Vader
allows his child to grow up on Tatooine, however, because he doesn't
want his his child to fall into the clutches of the Emperor. Though
Darth Vader is nominally loyal to the Emperor, he would prefer to
dethrone the Emperor, take his place, and rule the galaxy with his
child, as he later suggests to Luke in Ep 5. And as Anakin said in Ep 2,
he believes he will become the most powerful of all the Jedi. Why does
Ben Kenobi assume Luke is safe on Tatooine, though? It doesn't make
sense. Alternatively, Yoda casts a Jedi spell on Darth Vader that makes
him forget all about Tatooine. (Why Darth Vader doesn't know where Luke
is, is a plot hole. I don't know if it can be resolved.)

- Ben tells Owen and Beru that Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker. They
believe Ben. They never think that Anakin could have actually become the
infamous Darth Vader.

- Ben Kenobi retires to Tatooine to keep a watchful eye on Luke. Ben
ceases to be a Jedi Knight. Later, in Ep 4, Ben says he was "once" a
Jedi Knight.

- The Empire creates Star Fleet. (Or did the Republic create Star Fleet
by the time of Ep 2's epilogue?)

- R2D2 and C3PO took up with the Trade Federation's droids at the end of
Ep 2. When the Rebellion gets their hands on the droids, the two lucky
droids fall into the hands of the Rebellion. At the end of Ep 3, to
protect Luke and Leia, their memory is erased. Later, in Ep 5, R2D2 does
not recognize Yoda, though he should have from Ep 1 and 2. In Ep 1 and
2, Yoda is famous. C3PO does not recognize Ben Kenobi from Ep 1 and 2,
either. Ben Kenobi and Yoda would not recognize the droids because there
are so many droids that look just like them. In Ep 4, C3PO says his
"first job" (after memory erasure) was communicating with binary load
lifters. Prior to Ep 4, R2D2 and C3PO's last master was in the Antilles
system. There, they apparently they served together. This might be
related to Wedge Antilles. Somehow this was all at the same time that
they served Princess Leia at the beginning of Ep 4. Either their memory
is wiped at the end of Ep 3, or continuity is destroyed.

- The Empire makes secret plans to build the Death Star and TIE
Fighters. The planet Naboo is totally destroyed. It will become the
energy source for the future Death Star. This makes Padme really depressed.

- The Rebels plan to build X-Wings and Y-Wings, etc.

- The Empire introduces the system of governorships, as in the example
of Governor Tarkin in Ep 4. This system replaces the Imperial Senate at
the beginning of Ep 4.

- Darth Vader becomes known as Lord Vader. Darth Vader is also later
known as Dark Lord of the Sith. His job is the Emperor's chief enforcer.

Regrets. The sense of wonder that Lucas allowed in Episodes 4-6 is gone.
Every last minor character and legend is now being accounted for and
tied into the continuity. It is now just a nice, mostly well-knit story.
The sense of wonder is gone. How can we show the next generation
Episodes 1-6 in order?

Maybe Anakin is put on some sort trial by the Jedi for disobeying their rules
regarding marriage. In his anger he leaves the temple without learning the
decision of the counsel. By the time Obi-Wan tries to bring back Anakin to the
temple and smooth things over, Anakin has already become a Sith Lord intent on
punishing the Jedi like an angry teenager who wants to get back at his parents
for grounding him.

Until *before* Episode 5. As ESB opens, I've always gotten the impression
that Vader was already in the midst of looking for his son Luke...

Sean,
can't believe I just called ESB "Episode 5"...

In Ep 4, Ben tells Luke that his father wanted him to have his
lightsaber. Unless Ben is lying, his father, Anaking/Darth Vader, had to
have known that he had a child. He must have known about the child when
he last saw Kenobi, circa Ep 3.

In Ep 5, the Emperor brings up the subject of Luke Skywalker when
talking to Darth Vader. The Emperor does not need to tell Darth Vader
how Luke and Anakin are related, because Darth Vader already knows.

Luke does not lose his green lightsaber -- he throws it away when
facing the Emperor, but retrieves it before leaving the Death Star with
Anakin's body. Luke's lightsaber is swinging from his belt when he
reunites with his friends on Endor.

It's questionable whether Darth Vader tells Obi-Wan to give Luke the
blue lightsaber. Vader learns of Luke between episodes IV and V,
probably after sensing his power during the dogfight over the Death
Star and then getting Imperial spies to find out the pilot's name.
(Hmm... some kid named Skywalker who is strong in the Force shows up at
the Death Star shortly after droids containing the Death Star plans
landed on Vader's home planet. Duh!) Obi-Wan is distorting history for
what he thinks is Luke's benefit. It's more likely Vader lost this
saber during his fight with Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan kept it.

Seriously, even if my list is partially wrong, there is a lot of ground
for Episode 3 to cover. If Lucas makes it, I won't hesistate to go see a
4 hour Star Wars movie.

You missed a couple important cues.

None of this will really spoil anything, so here goes.

* Anakin is ALREADY Vader. Take a close look at the scenes,
especially shot from behind. Those are Vader's robes and he
looks exactly like Darth Vader ... except without the helmet.

* There are lots of other trappings subtly wrapping themselves
around the plot. You'll see the first Star Destroyer somewhere
in the middle of the movie.

* The fiercely bittersweet montage that was the final 10 seconds
of the movie (especially coming straight off the ominous scene
preceding it) set the stage perfectly clear. Like so.

Anakin will become disfigured falling into the lava pit fighting
Obi-Wan. That's when the helmet is added to his collection.

Obi-Wan tells Padme that Anakin died in the fight. Anakin stays
away from her because he doesn't want her to see what he's become.
He still loves her, even after becoming Darth Vader. When he looks
out from behind the mask, it's still her he still sees, because it's
her image and love that continues to haunt him for the rest of his life.
It's partly the grief that keeps him hidden behind the dark robes and
mask, knowing that he'll never again experience the cool breeze of
the days he spent with her on her home world. Part of the reason
he wants to destroy the beauty and good of places like her world
is because he can't drive it out of his own heart. There's still
good left in him.

This line neednt be taken so literally to mean that Anakin wanted the
sabre passed on to Luke _specifically_. It could simply refer to a
conversation between Anakin and Obi-wan, that if he ever had a kid he'd
want to pass on his lightsabre to them.

or something like that

spoiler space. Spoilers for Ep 2 and speculation on Ep 3.

Interesting. I just don't think Anakin is Vader yet. Ben tells Luke that
Darth Vader murdered his father. This implies that when Luke and Leia
were conceived, Anakin was not yet Vader.

After Obi-Wan fights Anakin, Darth Vader puts on the helmet and mask.
Obi-Wan probably can tell it's Anakin because he can sense him behind
the mask. Alternatively, Anakin was named Darth Vader before the fight,
and kept that name even after adding the mask and helmet.

How widely known is Darth Vader's medical condition in the Star Wars
universe? At the end of Ep 6, Luke knows that if Vader takes off his
mask, he will die.

I'm going to have to see Ep 2 again. I thought that the Star Destroyers
made their first appearance at the end of Ep 2, and with 2 large
engines, instead of the 3 large engines they have in Ep 4. You say it
appeared in the middle. I missed that.

Ben tells Luke that his father wanted him to have his lightsaber. That
does not dovetail with the "certain point of view" explanation in Ep 6
Ben gives Luke on why he lied about the identity of his father. If Ben
lied about such a thing, that would be a major blot on his character.

I just don't see how Ben could have lied about that. It didn't serve to
protect Luke like the lie about his father's identity.

> Something else -- I'd prefer that Amidala die before Anakin's turn to Vader.

Probably won't work. Ep 3 takes place 2 years after Ep 2. That means
that Amidala and Anakin could have had twins by the time of Ep 3. If
they did, though, Anakin would know of both of them. Darth Vader only
learns about Leia being his child at the end of Ep 6. If the twins are
born at the end of Ep 3, and then Amidala dies, Leia won't have time to
spend with her mother. In Ep 6, Leia says she remembers her mother,
though she died when she was very young.

OTOH, when watching Ep 5 after the first four, we'd hear Ben tell Luke
about Yoda. Then, Luke's inability to find Yoda will become much
funnier. When Yoda finally does appear, the viewer will be struck with
sadness at seeing him in such a decrepit state, and yet cheered by his
childlike good humor in the midst of bad fortune.

This is the main reason to watch the episodes out of order. Watching
them in order does change the story.

This is an excellent idea. It could also fit with Anakin saying in Ep 2
that he will use the Force to bring people back from the dead. If Anakin
really dies, and then is raised again, he is like the Antichrist. This
story would be gripping and powerful.

We could take it even further. Wearing his famous mask, Darth Vader
could appear first while Anakin was still thought to be a good Jedi.
Anakin maintains his secret identity as Vader. Most of the Jedi wonder
who Vader is. Anakin is putting the mask on to become Vader at night,
almost like Batman. As he has turned to the Dark Side, Vader stealthily
kills most of the Jedi. Then, Yoda and Obi-Wan learn the truth: Anakin
is Vader. Obi-Wan and Anakin have their colossal fight. During the
fight, Obi-Wan delivers a terrific blow to Anakin. Anakin is near death.

Obi-Wan and Anakin talk. As Anakin knocks on death's door, the two old
friends, embittered and spiteful still, nevertheless open up to each
other. Obi-Wan expresses his sorrow that he was not a good enough Jedi
master for Anakin. Anakin says he regrets being unable to fulfill the
prophecy of bringing balance to the Force. Then, Obi-Wan tells him that
Padme is pregnant, so maybe his child can still bring the prophesied
balance. Obi-Wan does not know that Padme is carrying twins, and so
Obi-Wan only tells him of the one child he knows about. Knowing that he
is dying, Anakin tells Obi-Wan to give his child his lightsaber, to take
care of the child, and to train him in the Force. Obi-Wan agrees.

Anakin clinically dies. Obi-Wan makes his peace with Anakin. Obi-Wan
worries out loud that some other dark Jedi will pick up the mask and
carry on the now legendary mantle of Darth Vader. (This leads the viewer
to believe that in Ep 4, Darth Vader is not Anakin. It preserves the
suspense in Episodes 4 and 5.) Finally, at the very end of Ep 3, in a
mystical, cloudy scene, where we can't really tell what is going on, the
Force intervenes and raises Anakin from the dead.

Then, the following occurs between Episodes 3 and 4, but is not shown on
screen: Darth Vader is unable to breathe without the assistance of a
machine. The Darth Vader mask becomes permanent. Anakin has truly become
Vader. As Luke says in Ep 6, if he takes off the mask, he will die.

This would be a pretty cool story. It would also resolve most of the
dangling plotlines that I can think of.

Whaddya think?

retains some of its impact), but your idea is a bit convoluted and
rests on Obi-wan worrying out loud convincingly. And the "raising of
Anakin" sounds trite to me and I worry about Lucas's ability to show
that convincingly. All this also makes Obiwan's statement to Luke in
ANH that Vader killed his father stand out as a straight lie, but an
understandable one (since we the audience would think it was cos he
was afraid to admit he killed Anakin).

I have two ideas how to resolve it:

(1) Obiwan fights Vader but he does not know who he is. Vader is
defeated but not killed. Obiwan (or Vader) lifts up the mask and
realises who he faced but this is not shown to the audience. Then, he
either cannot bring himself to kill Anakin while he is down or for
some reason is forced to flee.
The problem with all of this is that Anakin's temptation by the
Emperor and his slaying of Dooku to "take his rightful place" cannot
be shown as it would destroy the 'surprise' in ESB.

(2) Or another way would be to not show Vader in Episode III before
the Obiwan-Anakin fight, and just showing Anakin being "killed".
However, as Obiwan assumes he has won, we see Anakin's bionic hand
twitch or something. Later we see Sidious with a new apprentice,
Vader, who he uses to kill Dooku. So the temptation scene occurs AFTER
the Obiwan-Anakin fight not before. However we run into a problem as
Obiwan won't know who Vader is. Of course, we could show Obiwan
finding out some other way but the audience not being told who he is.
The implication of this is that the Obiwan-Anakin fight would occur
surprisingly early in the movie with Vader showing up earlier than
expected.

All in all difficult.

Due to this difficulty, I don't think Lucas will try it and go for a
straight obvious Anakin -> Vader transformation. Disappointing, as the
ESB Luke-Vader fight will lose its significance for those watching it
from I-VI.

I like the idea, but that was no braid. The alien was wearing some
sort of headband and your "braid" was part of it. Unless females of
that race are hairless - assuming she's female - and that was her
artificial braid, but now we're just making things up.

When Anakin turns to Vader, he doesn't need the mask. The machinary is
needed for life support, so he will probably get more bionic parts after a
major battle with either Obi-Wan, Yoda, Dooku or even Sidious.

Vader will probably be some sort of double agent for a while. This will
allow him to maneuver within the jedi and betray them.

Boba will still be a young child in Ep 3. He won't be able to fight Windu
face to face, but I could see him disintegrating Mace. Thus, the Vader line.

I think it's possible Yoda will fight and kill something near that dark side
tree.

Jimmy Smits is too old for Amidala.

I think Anakin will return to Tatooine to free the slaves. While there, he
will visit his mother's grave and talk to Owen about joining to fight
against the separatists. Owen will decline. And as Anakin leaves Tatooine,
he will say something to Obi-Wan like "The pain that this planet brings me
is too great. I will never come back to Tatooine".

And don't forget this really important item:

- Realizing the folly of his emergency powers proposition, Jar Jar commits
suicide

Machinery is linked to the Dark Side. That was why Luke's bionic hand,
covered by a black glove, was so eerie in Ep 6. It also explains the
failure in the cave in Ep 5. I agree, however, that Anakin does not need
to put on the armor or mask to initially become Darth Vader.
