Did the drivers you got from Promise come in the form of floppy
disk images? If so, did you copy them to floppies using dd or
rawrite AND install via "expert" or "dd" mode?

Hi,

I have a Tyan Thunder 2518 motherboard with onboard Promise IDE
RAID controller (Fastrack 100) but am unable to install Redhat 7.2

Using the drivers supplied by Promise, the virtual console log shows
the following:

* trying to mount device /tmp/fd0
* probing buses
* finished bus probing
* found suggestion of ft
* found nothing

So it isn't loading the ft.o driver and therefore I cannot install Redhat
:(

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful. BTW, please
don't suggest contacting either Tyan or Promise as I've already done
that and each company suggests I contact the other!!!

Thanks,
Chris

The drivers are extracted onto a DOS formatted floppy and during
the install Redhat mounts the floppy and reads the files on it just
fine. It is not required to copy the files using dd or rawrite.

Yes, the install was done with 'dd' and 'expert' modes - neither
works. It is definately a problem with the drivers and I was hoping
someone had experienced the same problem - and found the
answer!

Chris

Do you get the obligatory "Installing blah-blah driver" messages
while they're being read by the installer? I'm fishing here.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an IDE RAID control for a RedHat
7.1 machine. I'm just looking to do RAID 1.

As you can see by my missives, the Promise FastTrack 100 has some
issues. Whether these are motherboard or actual controller problems
is still a bit up for debate. And I think the Promise unit is
essentially a "WinRAID", meaning that it depends on the CPU to do
the grunt work--there's no dedicated RAID processor.

We have successfully used the DupliDisk from ARCO under lots of
different Linux implementations. These are true hardware RAID 0/1
controllers. As far as Linux is concerned, they're just an IDE
drive. No extra drivers needed. Works great. Comes in a bay
mount, a flex (you figure out where to put it) mount, and as a
PCI slot controller.

No, I don't work for them. I just know they work under Linux
without a problem.

Hello Chris,
I have a Promise Ultra 100TX ide controller card running with RH7.0 and have
some info that might prove usefull.
The info Promise sent me was for the above ide controller card and may not
be applicable to your raid card but it might get you started.
I couldn't get the ft.o driver loaded using either dd or expert install so I
tried the method described below and it worked great.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Email from Promise Tech Support follows...........

Installing and Booting RedHat Linux 6.2/7.0 on Your Promise ULTRA100 or
Ultra100TX2 Controller

I. RedHat 6.2 & 7.0
Ultra 100 & Ultra 100Tx2
a. Finding Your Promise I/O
Boot from a Linux Floppy or CD. Hit enter and continue into the graphical
install.
At the first graphical install screen, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get to a command
prompt. You should see a command prompt that looks like the following.
bash# (or) sh-2.04#
Now, you need to look at the /proc/pci file. This command (Bash# cat
/proc/pci |less ) will enable the user to determine the I/O ranges for all
PCI devices in the system.
Type the following at the bash# (or) sh-2.04#

cat /proc/pci |less

Once you look up the I/O ranges for the Promise Controller You will notice
something similar to the following:

Bus 0, device 17, function 0:
Unknown mass storage controller: Promise Technology Unknown device (rev
2).
Vendor id=105a. Device id=d30.
Medium devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=32.
(A) I/O at 0x9400 [0x9401].
(B) I/O at 0x9000 [0x9001].
(C) I/O at 0x8800 [0x8801].
(D) I/O at 0x8400 [0x8401].
I/O at 0x8000 [0x8001].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd5800000 [0xd5800000].

NOTE: Please note the letters A, B, C, and D are only for reference. These 4
lines contain the I/O addresses that you will need to make the installation
to see your Promise ATA100 controller.

6. Type the following command:
ide2=0x9400,0x9002 ide3=0x8800,0x8402
NOTE: Be aware that for lines B and D you need to add 2 to set the right
value In the I/O range according to the formula below. Write this
command down because you will need it when you reboot.
ide2=A,B+2 ide3=C,D+2

b. Installing and Booting Linux
Now that you have written down this information, you need to reboot from the
Linux Floppy or CD.
When you get to the initial boot prompt screen type your ide command at the
boot prompt like the example below:
boot: text ide2=0x9400,0x9002 ide3=0x8800,0x8402

3. This should allow you to continue on with RedHat setup and now it should
find any HDD on the ATA 100 controller. You should have no problem
installing Linux.
Remember to type the ide command after the installation reboot:
Boot: linux ide2=0x9400, 0x9002 ide3=0x8800, 0x8402
Make certain that you Add the "append" command to your lilo.conf follow
the examaple below:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hde9
append="ide2=0x9400, 0x9002 ide3=0x8800, 0x8402"

NOTE: Make certain always, whenever you modify your lilo.conf file be sure
to run /sbin/lilo as root to reinstall lilo or you may not be able to
reboot. To insure a flawless install make certain that there is no resource
sharing from the start of the installation to insure a flawless install.

I personally would advice you to use software raid, hardware raid is
expensive and IMHO linux software raid is good (reliable and stable)
enough and as fast as hardware raid if you have a good cpu, so invest the
money wisely.

Hi,

What processor/chipset are you using. It appeared to me that redhat 7.1,
7.2, pensicola and skipjack fail at the driver install stage for any driver
that needs to be installed at install time on P4s with intel chipsets. I
have put a bug into redhat, bug no 61846. I had to install an Adaptec 2400
using a PIII and swapping back to the P4 after install. Are all these
problems P4/Intel chipset related?

Hi Stephen,
I'm running an older motherboard with this Promise controller. It's a PChips
MB575 with an ALi IV chipset (1 meg L2 cache) Bios flashed to allow for 256
meg ram and a K6-2/500Mhz proccessor.
I'm using this box as my at home web, mail, ftp, telnet server box. Running
RH7.0

Thanks for that Scott - I'm making progress now...

The drives are being seen by the system, but only as two seperate
drives and I have created a mirrored array in the Fastrack BIOS.

It see's /dev/hde & /dev/hdg

Anyone any ideas how to make it see the one mirrored drive?

I'm guessing it should see something like /dev/sda ???

Thanks,
Chris

Yo, info,

I have had serious issues with Promise's Fast Track 100 drivers. This is
what they call hardware RAID, but is truly software driven. I had exactly
the same issues you are having, but mine are resolved. What is the Asic chip
number, I have a driver for a specific chip created from Promise.

No, I have not had a resolution... I have made some progress, by
entering the addresses of the Promise controller at the prompt
(ide2=0x... etc) I can get Linux to see the individual drives as
/dev/hde, etc but it still won't load the ft.o driver and therefore still
doesn't see the RAID array itself.

So any assistance you can provide would be gratefully reeceived!

Chris

I just pulled down the tar.gz file from Promise. It looks like a
fairly standard driver install.

I'm assumming you unzipped and untarred this onto a floppy, rather than
simply copying the ".tar.gz" file to a floppy. It must be unzipped
and untarred to work. If all you have is Windows, then you may have
trouble doing this (you may not have a "tar" program). I can build a
floppy disk image for you and email it to you. Then you just need to
use rawrite.exe to copy the file to a blank floppy. rawrite.exe is
available on the RedHat CD, or I can send that, too, if you want.

If you did untar it, did you ever examine the readme.txt file from
there? The instructions are fairly explicit. Also note the warning
about Linux misidentifying the chipset.

I'm following this thread closely as I'm having problems adding the promise
FastTrak 2000 Raid Controller to an existing Redhat 7.2 (2.4.7-10) system
Would using just /dev/hde work? Letting the controller mirror to /dev/hdg?
I'm assuming that you now have the ft.o driver working.

Yes... I actually used a DOS formatted floppy and copied the
unzipped file onto it, the Linux install will happilly mount such a disc,
in fact you can see from one of the virtual consoles that it mounts
the disc, reads the ft driver, scans the bus and finds nothing!

Yep, been there, done that, got the T-shirt ;-)
The chipset I have is a PDC20267 which is NOT one that the
README says is mis-identified, I did - just for the hell of it - follow
the alternative instructions, but that didn't work either :(

Getting a bit fed up now!

I have the Fastrak66 "working" in RH 7.2. I just did a clean install on the
BX based mobo. One drive on each of the primary channels. No HW Raid choices
but that's okay. What I'm finding is that the box just locks up solid - a
lot. I'd like to remove the FT66 and just use the mobo's IDE interface. Is
this possible without a re-install?

Here's what grub.conf and df -hAt have to say on my Abit BH6 v1.0:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdg5
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hde

timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.7-10 ro root=/dev/hdg5
initrd /initrd-2.4.7-10.img

What would I change before pulling the FT66 and connecting directly to the
mobo IDE primary I/F? Any help very much appreciated.
