I installed OfficeXP Service Pack 2 this morning on my laptop running WinXP
Professional. I cannot edit equations now. In Word it will allow me to
create equations, but once I leave the equation box, I cannot return and
edit the equation. I also cannot edit the equations in any existing files. I
do not have the MathType version of Equation Editor. In Word the
message is: "The object is corrupt or no longer available."

In PowerPoint the action is different. I cannot open any equations in
existing PowerPoint files. However, I can create new equations and then edit
those. If I try to edit an existing equation, the message I receive is: "The
server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application." I am not
running Office from a server. It is installed directly on my hard drive. I
do not even connect to a domain for authentication. Office XP was installed
from CDs.

Any help would be appreciated!

The error message is referring to the OLE server (that is, Equation Editor)
rather than a file server. My contact at Design Science (maker of Equation
Editor) is tied up right now but has promised to look into this tomorrow or
Monday.

I have the same problem when I try to open an Excell
document inserted in Word or Powerpoint, after installing
SP 2.

Reinstalling SP1 solves the problem.

Same problem here. Cannot open embedded Excel Spreadsheets, either from old
documents or newly created ones.
Same error message.

Some Service Pack this is!
Thank heavens for System Restore!

I have a similar problem with the XP Service Pack 2 and
Word. When installing the Service Pack, it opens a box
saying "updating Word 2002" and then stops and
says "Cannot find file WORDRET.MSI" and gives me a chance
to browse my computer for it or cancel. I did a search on
my computer using START/SEARCH, but no such file exists.
I tried looking on the web using google. Nope. I tried
going to Microsoft's websites and searching - no luck. It
doesn't give me an ignore option, so I had to cancel - so
I don't have the Service Pack 2 loaded.

I don't know how I got here, but if you have an idea for
me - please email me at don...@donself.com as I don't
know if I can find this place again to read any responses.

Hi Catalyst,

If you're running Norton Antivirus see if disabling the Norton plug-in for MS Office fixes the problem for you .

It's documented in the MS Knowledge Base:
OFFXP: Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You Install Office XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q328/6/13.asp.

Hope this helps,
regards,
Astrid
