I was there, along w/ about 350 magicians. People were informed up front
by Rich Block That if you easy affended, not to come. We all know what
can happen @ a roast. When I think of a roast I think of the Fryers
Club, I dont think anyone there was prepared for what follow That Night
Midway thru the Amazing Jonathan Roast.
Here in Las Vegas, The roast For the amazing Jonathan began @ 11:30 on
Monday Night. small stage w about 8-10 people to Roast the Amazing
Jonathan. Lance Butron Roast -no problem, Billy McComb-no problem-very
funny, Mac King -all very funny,,,,,,and then Penn---
Not on stage but from the back of the room-Im sure you'll all hear about
what followed. I think it was a really bad call. Many people were
offended. Sorry I atttended.

<snip>You missed a really amazing Amazing Johnathan roast. Penn came in with
Teller nailed to a cross, dressed like Jesus Christ getting a b*** j** by a
midget. It really offended some people. Also there were great jokes by
Siegfried (surprise guest), Billy McComb,<snip>

Mini Mary Magdalene?

At least they didn't do a torn and restored flag. Most should know by now
that P & T are atheists and they regularly make fun of established religion
(faith healing polyester), animal rights (cut and restored snake) Death and
health care (needle through blood balloon) and gun control (bullet catch).

Over the top? maybe a next level for P & T.

Well, it WAS a Jonathan roast. If it'd been an Andre Kole roast, that would be
another story.

What was the most offensive thing someone other than P&T said or did?

That's what I've been thinking ever since getting an email about the thing.

What else would anyone reasonably expect? This is P&T, an act that's done a
miserable job hiding their contempt for typical magicians. And they were
invited to an outing that would reasonably have in the audience who?

I was thinking more along the lines that if Andre had done the bit, it would
be out of character and offensive. For P&T, though, I think it was
congruent. Offensive, but congruent.

Penn and Johnathan have had this running athetist game going back and forth for
awhile. The bit was done for Johnathan with P & T not caring who was there to
see it other than Johnathan. It was exactly what they wanted to do and got the
response they wanted. It was not a bad call at all.

I have been a fan of P&T since day one. I remember their earliest television
performances (on Saturday Night Live) and really REALLY enjoyed their
cutting edge brand of entertainment. Their stuff was unpredictable, funny
and magical all at the same time.

I was even fortunate enough to see their live road show a few years back
(featuring the bullet catch) and I though that it was one of the most
enjoyable shows that I had ever seen. But since their move to Vegas I have
been sorely disappointed in the content of their TV performances. I'm
talking about what I've seen on TV - I have not seen their latest live Las
Vegas show and can't comment on the quality of that show. Their television
appearances (magic specials, Letterman appearances, etc.) followed a path of
slow deterioriation - from very funny (must see TV) to just plain stupid and
predictable. What happened to them?

Consider their "live from Las Vegas" show from a year or two ago. I eagerly
awaited each episode (and I watched them all because I was a true fan) but I
was completely underwhelmed by the shows. It was cool to see some of their
"magician guests" but over all the show just simply wasn't good and, in
comparison to their early TV appearances, they were boring, unfunny and
forgettable. Recent TV crap (Fear Factor) enforces my belief that they have
lost their funny edge and that their novelty has worn off.

Perhaps they have nothing more to offer. This explains why they often resort
to pure shock value in order to be seen, heard and talked about. They sure
ain't about magic anymore.

Tim,
See their show in Vegas. It's worth the trip and will renew your faith in
them. I would tell you all that went on with the creation of the Sincity
Spectacular on FX but it is such a saga that it would not fit in this ng.

As for fallout from the WMS, those that would be offended by such a stunt were
and those that would not, weren't. It was about as expected, and when I say
expected, I mean expected by those of us that were watching from the sidelines.
P & T did it just for Jonathan. Part of their athetist passion play game is to
do this back and forth in public.

Tim-
I have heard this complaint before and I guess it's expected (and
hoped) that after 28 years in the business, the act will change and go
in a new direction.. I second Todd's recommendation that you see the
show they now do in Vegas. I was there 3 months ago and am going back
next month. Even though I had seen some of the bits on TV (including
the bullet catch)and knew what was coming, it didn't detract from my
admiration for their craft. And I still laughed my fool head off.

We haven't seen you hear for quite some time now. Your Maestro series is much
missed!

For people who missed it, do a google groups search on keyword Maestro and and

Any plans to come to Tokyo or Japan in the near future?

I have been a resident for 10 years and am a great fan of stylish, lyrical magic

Dear Geoffrey

I have been performing mostly in America and Canada. I am trying to finish a
book a illusion presentation and the presentation of magic in general before
the summer convention season. It has been taking me a long time, but I want
the book to be special.

Hey all,

I heard about the Penn and Teller "performance".... It's a bit
"off" as far as I'm concerned. You don't hear about Kreskin doing
anything like THAT that's for DAMN sure! I feel they are simply
pulling a "Madonna"! They want to shock us and push the envelope. Too
bad. Thought they were more talented than that.

Paul-everyone- get with the program! The Penn & Teller bit wasn't a
"stunt" intended to "shock"- it was the latest volley in an ongoing
private joke-war between Penn & Jonathan.

A "stunt" Kreskin tried was feeble and it backfired on him : Kreskin
promised to pay $50,000 to charities if his prediction of a major UFO
sighting in Nevada didn't happen.

He claimed to create mass hypnosis during the event then reneged on
turning the money over to the charities, saying those hypnotized
believed they had seen a UFO.

Penn & Teller are funny. Kreskin is nothing but sad.

You need to get with the program because you are wrong.

The bit was to be "outrageous" and "shake things up".

Disagree? Take it up with Penn; they are his own words.

Then keep it private! What they did in public only shows the lack of respect
they have for many.
