The following quotes were taken from the back of
the box and the manual for a new flight-simulator
game for IBM PC compatibles called 'Flight
Unlimited'.

"Experience Real Time Computational Fluid
Dynamics, the most advanced flight simulation
modeling technology available anywhere"

"The physics code was the most challenging and
the most crucial - no other flight simulator
had ever tried to model the actual processes
of aerodynamics, the invisible fluid motion
of the air passing over an airfoil."

"This is why the planes in FLIGHT fly so
differently from most simulations - their
movements are generated from the motion of
the air over the control surfaces. The
equations of physics have been transposed
from the textbooks to the world of FLIGHT.

As far as we can tell, FLIGHT just can't
get any more real."

a) I realize that definitions can be fairly elusive things,
but I think it highly unlikely that the sort of calculations
that can be done at 10 frames per second on a Pentium
can be fairly described as CFD modelling the flow around
an airfoil.

b) If (a) is accepted then:

i) The issue of false or misleading advertising arises, and,
ii) I think the claim cheapens the effort that goes into
'real' CFD development and applications. How can one
justify, to a total outsider, spending years of effort
developing a 3D NS code to do flow around an aircraft
when the problem has already been 'solved' by a $80
PC program?

Perhaps my definition of 'real' CFD is too narrow, in any
case I would be interested in other people's views on
the above claims.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hey! Remember cold fusion?! Maybe we should give these
guys a govt. research contract so their algorithm can
be published for all to see and benefit from.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Of course it can
be done, with 5 grid cells and only as long as the plane's
speed does not exceed, oh, 0.1 m/s!

Robin.
