WordTabs is listed as a priceless WordPad replacement.
A ZDNet link to version 3.25 is provided.
The last and best version is 3.29 and can be obtained here :
ftp://ftp.uni-koeln.de/pc/win32/editor/wordtabs.zip 1.5 MB download
This file does not contain a spell checker dictionary. However :
WordTab like its simpler but faster predecessor NotesPad is from Skip Bremer.
Both are no longer supported, in fact Bremer no longer maintains a Webpage.
It appears there is still interest for both text editors though.
Dictionaries for NotesPad also work for WordTabs and can be obtained here :
http://www.newbie.net/NotesPad/ (for instance the "Moby" Dictionary).

Blurb :

WordTabs is both a standard text editor (like Notepad) and a rich text (RTF)
editor (like WordPad) that uses uses the latest RTF technology so you can have
access to OLE objects, Internet URLs, multiple undo/redo, and advanced
line/character formatting.
To access most of these advanced RTF features, you must have an upgraded Windows
riched20.dll file installed on your machine.

The standard stuff...
Can be your default system editor, instead of Notepad
Uses the popular tabbed interface, instead of MDI
Can sort, case, find/replace, and all that kind of boring stuff

The advanced stuff...
Unlimited undo and redo operations
Paragraph line spacing (single, 1 and ½, double)
More text font styles (super/subscript, protected, disabled)
Highlight/open Internet URL links (http://, mailto:)
Background font colors

And just some of the cool stuff...
Rich text editing as well as standard editing
Insert OLE objects; edit them in place
Insert pictures (BMPs, GIFs, JPEGs, etc.)
Drag & drop editing (can drag file tabs, too)
Spell checking and word count
Remembers file stuff (position, print settings, etc.) between sessions
Index files by lines/paragraphs
Editable multiple clipboard text collector (Spike)
Filer utility (ala Windows Explorer)
Glossary function
Large most recently used files list
Both favorite files and folders lists
Convenient toolbars (standard, format, run, etc.)
Good, no-nonsense command shortcut keys
Can be an Internet data collector and more

All this is in one reasonably-sized file (no DLLs). And it's free for
all--commercial, governmental, everyone.

It was my favourite, until CryptEdit became freeware.

Hallo E.M.,

Well, that depends.

I was pleasantly surprised when after installing CryptEdit it turned out that I
did have a Dutch spell checker! And an English spell checker. I can choose.
Without having downloaded dictionaries.
CryptEdit makes use of installed Microsoft text conversion files.
I believe that you must have MS Word 95 or newer.

Actually, 3.30 was the last version of the executable but was not a full
zip file. Skip issued it just before retiring from his job for the
government of Texas and programming. "simply copy WordTabs.exe over the
WordTabs.exe you already have installed. Also, don't forget to rename it
and then copy it to notepad.exe if you had previously replaced
notepad.exe."

I never knew about 3.30. Thanks for the info!.
Now of course it would be nice to know a bit more ;-)
Do you happen to know about changes?
Is it distributed somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

I picked it up from his website just before he closed it down. The
following if from the text file accompanying the .EXE file.
"3.30
File|Find is so popular that it has been improved even more. There
are more system folders that can be skipped when searching for files and
it now has its own shortcut key (Alt+F2).
The Font color for Non-RTF files in the Tools|Options dialog under
the Fonts tab is no longer a
default value. Rather it is an all-encompassing value for all
non-RTF files, just like the Window
color is and has been.
The File|Send (to MAPI email clients) commands have been
reactivated. The work great with one caveat noted in the Help - Known
Issues section.
Added Help|Backup WordTabs Registry (to help with sharing WordTabs
on other machines) and Help|Clear WordTabs Settings (technical support
tool).
Added a View|Clipboard command to run the Windows Clipboard Viewer,
if it has been installed.
The Paragraph|Paragraph dialog now increments/decrements the Spacing
before and after attributes by 6 points instead of 1.
Fixed the system RTF icons (including WordTabs file tabs) when
WordTabs is associated with RTF files (Help menu).
Fixed another situation that could prevent the saving of certain
newly created files.
Fixed the Help|Replace Windows Notepad feature for NT machines; it
was not always working properly.
Fixed a remote situation where WordTabs was not loading UNC
(\\server\\volume\...) files.
Removed the Splash screen--it wasn't worth much and it was slowing
down the WordTabs load."

Thank you very much Mark, for the info and for sending me 3.30.

Hi SOS,

WordTabs is Priceslessware and it would be nice to have the most update version
available for download. However it seems there is no known link anywhere on the
Web to this version.
An option is to reserve webspace/create a downloadpage for it.
If you agree, then :
either I could send you the file (or upload it) and leave it to you
or I could create a download page for it where you could link to.
For version 3.30 with a spell checker dictionary
a link to version 3.29 to install CryptEdit
a link to version 3.30 (which is only the exe and a HTM file) to update it
a link to http://www.newbie.net/NotesPad/ for dictionaries
should be provided.

Of course you would have no official distribution rights.
But Skip Bremer cannot be e-mailed or contacted otherwise.
My personal opinion is that he would not object (as long as original and complete
files are distributed).
Compare also http://www.newbie.net/NotesPad/ distributing his NotesPad.

Hi Sietse,

I have been paying attention :) Looked for 20 minutes for v3.30, resolved to wait for
offer from you as you seemed the one who was going to get it first. Currently my
web space is extremely limited, due to 5X size increase of Pricelessware pages...
(the Alphabetized list alone is 149Kb!), therefore would appreciate the multi-link you
speak of. Please send DL links to me and Genna and we will update the PL list
simultaneously.

Hi Sieste -

I had already updated the pages to reflect this change.
"NOTE - WORDTABS does not contain a spell checker dictionary, but
dictionaries for NotesPad (from the same author) will work with WORDTABS:

Take a look on abisource.com they make a wordlike program called
abiword.

Support .abw .zabw .rtf .txt formats.

Only accept pngfiles to be inserted but whats no problemo with
irfanview/xnview.

The server can be down sometime.

Hi Genna,

Yes, I had seen that alright. :-)
I just repeated that to be comprehensive.

I only now see from your post that the link has changed (is redirected).

Speaking of the dictionaries :
I made a mistake when I wrote that it does not come with a spell checker
dictionary.
Upon checking (reinstalling) it turns out that it does.
Must have been confused. I replaced that with a bigger English dictionary
(and added a Dutch one of course).
So you and SOS may want to rephrase that.

By the way : I thougt you would be away for another couple of days.
I now already created the download page.
If you would prefer to host it yourself, that would be perfectly alright of
course.
