With the warm weather approaching us here in DC, I thought that I'd point
out a little known Star Wars reference on the Washington National in case
someone out there wanted to take a field trip. I'm a change ringer there
and from the ringing chamber (and from the ground) you can see a
grotesque of Darth Vader. A grotesque is kind of like a gargoyle, but
intead of the water draining through his mouth, the water just runs over
the sculpture. Apparently, when the go-ahead was given in the early
1980's to build the two west towers, a contest was held for area
schoolchildren to design a grotesque. A Darth Vader design was the
winner and was carved and put on the north-west tower. It's just of
Vader's head, looking downwards. If anyone out there is in the DC area
and want to see it (AU students?), email me and I'll write detailed
instructions on where to find it.

Joe

Yeah, I remember that. It was in National Geographic's "World," a
magazine for younger kids. I wish I's remembered about it four years ago
when I was in D.C....
