OK ... here is our chance.
If you have discovered a bug in VB6 ***that was introduced with the
application of VS6/VB6 Service Pack 6*** I need to know ASAP. One more time
... this bug *must* have been introduced by the installation of VS/VB SP6
only.
The MS dev team is awaiting our report, therefore in order to get them to
actually see the issue I need from you:
- Brief description of the bug
- The precise steps to reproduce the bug (for the bug report) that includes,
wherever applicable, the simplest project code to display the bug.
Post the information here - do not email me as my anti-spam rules are
aggressive and your report may not be received. Try to post new bugs as a
subthread to this "Please Report SP6 bugs! (was Re: Visual Studio SP6)" main
post rather than as a response to another's post, just to helps sort out new
issues. "Me too" messages are welcome under the initial bug topic,
especially if you can provide alternate steps or code to reproduce the
identified bug.
I have already bugged the Listview Columnheader initially raised in the
original thread in vb.general.discussion, issue so please don't report that
bug again. But other listview issues can be posted.
If you don't post discovered SP6-related issues, we can't get them
identified and possibly fixed in a collective hotfix. So please don't
hesitate. I will post status updates to this thread as they are received
from MS.

When trying to browse an ASP application the following message is recorded in
the event log:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/RMAdmin'. The error was
'General access denied error
'
When truing to browse the default page the following message is recorded in the
event log:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was
'General access denied error
'.
I restored the system disk to it's pre-sp6 state and IIS works properly.
Steps to reproduce.
With VB6 SP5 installed and IIS with the default web page:
1. Using IE enter http://localhost in the location bar and press enter.
2. Two IE windows will be built:
http://localhost/localstart.asp
http://localhost/iishelp/iis/misc/default.asp
3. Install SP6
4. Using IE enter http://localhost in the location bar and press enter.
5. IE indicates the following error:
HTTP 500 - Internal server error
6. The event log has an entry with the following text:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was
'General access denied error
'.
Systems tested on Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, XP Pro.

The Windows 2000 problems seem to be security related but I have not been able
to uncover any VD permission or ACL issues. A complete system restore,
including the registry, fixes the problem. I have done this on two of the
systems affected but not a third, which is running Windows 2000 server. This
system does not serve asp pages and a full restore is not an option due to the
amount of activity on the server.
On XP IIS was complaining about an invalid reference in the global.asa file in
the default website, which I resolved. After taking a look at my backup logs it
appears this problem pre-dates SP6.

I downloaded the SP6 again, and did binary file comparisons on

Can you clear your Internet Explorer cache and download the
Service Pack again and then after it downloads, do the following:
Rename the service pack, and copy the file over to where the
original download was put into place.
The files should be displaying the same size.
Open up a DOS command prompt and type in the following:
fc /b <sp6name1.exe> <sp6name2.exe>
If it reports any errors you will know that some bit shifting occurred
in one of the downloads. And if this is the case, you will need to
download the service pack a third time and do the file comparisons
again. You want to identify the two files that are the same and
delete the file that is different.
If you are sure that this is NOT the problem, please post back
identifying such.
I saw your post somewhere else in the newsgroup, but this one
is highlighted on my list of highlights. I think it was your post. If
it was or was NOT you please identify such and let us know.
We need to know that if one or two people that are experiencing
the same problem. :-)
NOTE: Do not delete the files. Bit shifting is NOT limited to
downloads and can happen during file extraction and file copying.
This means that you may have had a good download, but during
the extraction process, the file that was written to your HDD in
the system32 or system folder, could be corrupted.
If one of the files is a bad file, delete that bad file, and then let us
know if there was a bad file.
The files can be extracted by adding the following switches:
/c /t:<FullyQualifiedPathNameTarget>

ErrLook gives "Error accessing the OLE registry." as the message corresponding
to 0x8002801c.
Could there be any reason why you don't have full access to the registry?

It should be pointing to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834001
at least for the English versions of the readme.htm file.
I can't comment on the other language versions of the files.
Just something I've noticed with the comctl32.ocx file. And it's
possible someone else might have mentioned this already. I can't
seem to find a reference to it though.
There are two different comctl32.ocx files in the VS6 distribution
package:
(1) comctl32.cab => comctl32.ocx date: 5/22/2000
(2) VS6sp61.cab\os\system => comctl32.ocx date: 3/9/2004
The installation of VS6SP6 installs #1 above on an XP system.
There are some other files that are duplicated in the SP as well.
I have set up an mdb database at the following location that
has a query displaying duplicate files. It also lists all the files in
the service pack.
http://www.microcosmotalk.com/tech/vs6/
The mdb is available for downloading here:
http://www.microcosmotalk.com/tech/vs6/sp6mdb2.zip
There is a Duplicate files query inside of it to view the files that
are duplicated. It is an incomplete list, as alot of files were
duplicated 3x and they all appeared to be the same size and
I deleted those from the list. It was the files that had different
dates/sizes that I left inside of that query.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
From car...@eddorre.com (carlos)
I called Microsoft and I have a fix for the problem "Unable to Run ASP
Pages After VS SP6 Installation". This is apparently caused as a
result of the permissions on mfc42.dll (located in
%systemroot%\winnt\system32 - on Windows 2000) being changed. The
IWAM_MACHINENAME user needs to have Read and Execute permissions to
this file. Once this is done, then it should work once again (it has
in my environment).
I tried replacing the comctl32.ocx with the newer version, but it did not
solve anything (I REALLY hoped it would). Just to be sure, I made a backup
of the comctl32.ocx wich was there and I just put it back...
I cannot find ANYTHING on Microsoft's site to warn user about the numerous
bugs in SP6 and there's still, to my knowledge, no (hot)fix for it. I find
it strange Microsoft is not doing anything about this, even after I've
mailed them more than once to tell them SP6 breaks more than it fixes ;-)
If anyone finds a hotfix for the problems in SP6, of knows when Microsoft
will make an official statement about these problems, please let me know!

I discovered the ListView bug (moving column headers crashes compiled apps
on winxp when vs6 sp6 installed) recently and after some fruitless googling
posted to this newsgroup.
Murpheys law that no sooner do I post that I come across your post below and
some other sites which shows the problems.
Currently, I cannot see the fix within XP's SP2, nor on MS's list of known
issues .. are you aware of anymore news on this problem?
Thanks,

At this point you would need to call support at 800-936-5800, describe the
problem, and request the hot fix. There is no charge for a support
incident created because of a bug. Point the router to the as yet
unpublished knowledge base article 841999 if you get pushback.
Hope this helps,
