2nd culprit is using McAffee antivirus software and having it set to scan
incoming email, using the Activex filter and perhaps the autoupdate feature.
For users of V6 of the McAffee software, they have finally admitted they can
cause loss of messages and have provided a patch on their website.
First, determine the location of your Default Message Store by opening OE
and on its menu, click File/Options/Maintenance and then Store Folder
button. Then click Start/Find/Files or Folders and search for all files
ending with DBX (In Win2K and XP, the DBX files are hidden so you will have
to modify search to include hidden files). If you find some in another
folder, they are most likely your missing messages. Note the folder
location, open OE and use File/Import/Messages/OE5/From an OE5 Message Store
and point it to the folder you found the DBX files in.
To extract the contents of a DBX file, use DBXtract, a free extraction tool
provided by Steve Cochran, PhD, MVP.
