Please, help me find this book...I think it is a Richard Scarry book,
but I am not sure.

The premise of the book is this: There are two bears, a Papa bear and a
Momma bear. Except they aren't Papa & Momma quite yet. The story
explains that these two bears were very happy except they didn't have a
BABY bear.

The story continues to show a baby bear is added to their family. The
Momma, Papa and baby bear are very happy. The Papa bear takes the baby
bear hunting & carries him on his shoulders. I remember an illustration
where Momma bear is riding on a sled pushed by Papa Bear. I think she
is covered by blankets.

There IS a book called "Good Night Baby Bear" which features the same
characters and is easy to find. I have not been able to find any
evidence of this book though.

I think the book I am seeking was a Golden Book. Golden Books still
features the characters on the backs of their books.

The printing of this book that I remember was probably late-late 1960's
or very early 1970's.

This book is VERY important to me. My husband and I just went through
years of infertility treatments and we finally adopted the most
wonderful little girl in the world! When we were going through all of
our anguish, I kept thinking about this book & somehow it gave me
inspiration. I would really like to share it with my baby now. I
thought it would make a great Father's day gift from baby to "Papa."

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Tania

I don't know about the bear book, but I can give you a suggestion on
where to find lots of adoption books for both kids and parents. We
are adoptive parents after infertility also.

Trish,

Thanks so much for your help! I do not remember what the book looked
like. I was talking to my mother last night & she said she thinks it
was part of a collection of STORIES and not a book at all.

If you read "Good Night Baby Bear," you can kind of recognise the fact
that is is a sequel to something...The characters are presented as
already known characters. At least, that is my opinion.

I was between the ages of two and five when I had the book, but I don't
know for sure which year. It must have been 1968 to 1972.

Your help is greatly appreciated :)

Trish,

WOW, thanks for all of your research!! I will try to search the way you
suggested.

I will have my mom look too since she probably has a better memory than
I do.

I have a battered but much-loved '73 edition of Richard Scarry's Best Story
Book Ever, that I believe contains the story you described.

Pierre Bear by Patricia Scarry
Quickish summary: He lived all by himself, fishing all alone, preparing fish
supper, "for Pierre was a Great Fisherman", wishing he had someone to share
it with. Then he heads for "the wild woods to hunt the Terrible Moose". He
kills a moose, "for Pierre was the bravest hunter of all the north" and
makes "moose stew, and moose pie, and moose cake, and thirteen jars of
minced moosemeat". Then he takes all his furs to the trading post to sell.
He tells the "pleasant lady bear" that he needs a guitar to sing to for he
lives alone. She says if that's the case he needs company and the next day
they are married and return to his cabin on a sledge - she's pictured all
snuggled up under some furs. "They lived happily all year long," with much
cooking and guitar playing. "But, best of all, Spring brought a little baby
bear to Mr and Mrs Pierre Bear. He was round and funny and full of fun.
And oh, how they loved him." Baby bear goes everywhere with Pierre. One
day Pierre decides the family needs new fur coats, so he and baby bear
paddle their little boats "to the place where the Fur Seal lived" and "shot
him. BANG!". Mrs Pierre makes them all white and black sealskin coats.

Apologies, I got a bit carried away, but hopefully there's something there
that rings a bell. Strangely, when I was reading the original mail I
immediately thought I recognised all your memories from within one story,
but if you had the same collection as me you may also be remembering "Is
This the House of Mistress Mouse?".

Mister Mouse has several near misses when he knocks on the door of a cat, a
hen and then a lion in his search for Mistress Mouse. Eventually they are
married by Father Mole. "They went on picnics. They took rides in the
country. They went rowing on the lake. And then one night, after they had
finished their supper, they heard something. It was a tiny "Squeak, squeak,
squeak," coming from the bedroom. What do you suppose it was that was
squeaking? It was their BABY! He wanted to be kissed goodnight. "Good
night, Daddy Mouse." "Good night, Mummy Mouse." "Good night, Baby Mouse."
"Good night." ".

My copy has the ISBN 0 601 08656 2

I hope this helps Tania and congratulations. Apologies to everyone else for
carrying on so long.

Maisie

AWESOME!!!! Maisie, you DID it!!!

Although I remembered it somewhat differenlty, when you described it I
remembered it perfectly! So, my mom was right after all. (hate to
admit it-just kidding) It WAS in a collection of short stories.

Do you know how I can find a copy??? I suppose I can look through the
resources quoted to me by others on this NG.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thanks to everyone who researched
this!

Wow!
Unfortunately, unlike many on this NG I just have a wierd memory and like
books as opposed to knowing anything much about them. In case it helps the
cause, here's the details:
My copy of Richard Scarry's "Best Story Book Ever" was bought in the UK and
is covered in orange cloth - any paper jacket is long gone. It has just
over 100 stories over 288 pages:
"First published 1970
Fifth impression 1973
Published by The Hamlyn Publishing Group ...
Copyright 1968, 1967, 1966, 1965, 1964, 1963, 1961, 1960, 1959, 1958, 1955,
1954, 1950 by Western Publishing Company Inc 'The Storybook Dictionary'
Copyright 1966 and 'The Golden Go-Go Library'
Copyright 1967 by Richard Scarry

ISBN 0 601 08656 2

Hope this helps. Good luck.

The book is still in print. I've seen it in various bookstores.
Amazon (http://www.amazon.com) has it available for $11.20.

So it is still being newly printed? That would be ideal.

Dear Tania,

I just joined this newsgroup a couple of days ago. I am a serious
Golden Book collector. Yes, this book does exist. It is #212 in the first
series of Little Golden Books. "Pierre Bear" was written by Patricia Scarry

and illustrated by her husband Richard. The copyrite is 1954. It's 28
pages and I'm sure it is the book you are looking for.

I have two copies, both first editions. When do you need it by?

Sincerely,
Elaine

Looking for the name of an elderly lady or her web site. I saw an interview
with her on Dateline NBC she was either an illustrator or author of
children's books. HINT PHRASE that she used often when answering a question
was "Isn't it so" I would really appreciate some help locating her.

I'm not sure whether this is the one you mean, but one of the major news
magazine shows had a warm feature on Margaret McElderry, editor
extraordinaire, who is still active and encouraging authors at age 80 or
so.

More than twenty years ago, when I was hoping to get a break, she sent me a
very encouraging rejection letter about a picture book manuscript. While
that remains unpublished, her encouragement was enough to keep me following
my dream.

Like me, Margaret McElderry is a native Pittsburgher, and I had the
pleasure of hearing her speak a few years ago at the Carnegie Library's
Fall Festival of Children's Books.
