Is Tweety male or female? What is the basis of your answer?

This is a question that has come up numerous times.

I, for one, am of the opinion that Tweety is male. This is based
on "Bad Ol' Putty Tat" (Freleng, 1949), in which Sylvester manages to
temporarily lure Tweety with a fake female canary (actually, one of his
fingers with a hat and painted-on eyes). This, along with Tweety's
sailor-boy hat he wears in this cartoon, is an indication that, at the
very least for the purposes of this particular cartoon, he was male.

Of course, WB never made a fetish of consistency, and I'm sure one
could come up with contrary evidence.

Does anybody have any idea why this question comes up so frequently? Some
kind of sociological thing? A sign of the impending collapse of Western
Civilization? Idle chatter around the office watercooler?

Paul Penna

ps: It has been established conclusively, beyond any shadow of a doubt,
that Tweety is male. The evidence is incontrovertible.

That is one of my primary pieces of evidence to support that, and I could
swear (but can't precisely think of) there have been cartoons where
Sylvester or Granny referred to Tweety as "he."

What I would like to know is HOW did Sylvester rig the dummy bird
to bat its eyes at Tweety? ;-)

Easily the most asked question of 1996 in this NG! This time however I
chose to not answer the question, but rather to ask one myself. Just what
is the basis of *your* confusion as to Tweety's gender? Since I was seven
or eight years-old, I've known what Tweety is.

With ABC cutting dynamite gags from cartoons, do you find
that your children are using explosives less frequently?

Rich -
If I am not mistaken, in one cartoon, Tweety said: "I'm a
BAAAAD boy!" -- a la Lou Costello.

I originally asked the question out of idle curiosity, arising out of a
time-killing discussion on trivia ["Why does Donald Duck put on a towel
when leaving the shower when all other times he doesn't wear pants?"], etc.

I'm a new fan of Warner Brothers [yes, I know DD isn't WB] and a brand new
reader of this NG and was amazed by the somewhat rude responses [like
above] to a simple, albeit dumb, question. It seems that if you're not a
walking encyclopedia on WB you're not worthy of help.

Thanks, however, to the few people who e-mailed me with a thoughtful
response.

I really didn't intend to be rude. After all the times this question has
been asked right here in this ng, I wanted very much to know *what* causes
this confusion. I have never thought Tweety was anything but 100% male.
Bob Clampett created Tweety based on a nude baby photo of himself. I
apologize for the response, especially to a new reader. Now *please* don't
ask about Bugs' cross dressing! ;)

Of course, Tweety could be bisexual-remember the little beatnik banty in
Foghorn Leghorn's last short, BANTY RAIDS(!963)?
