Voltron was this ill Japanese anime out in like the mid 80s... Basically, these five
robotic tiger type cats would all fight seperately, but join together and form this one
bugged SUPER ROBOT that would fight bigger enemies as a single unit...

Voltron was bangin', but you couldn't get with Starblazers. I'd still
kill to have the wave motion cannon. Any laser that could take out a
whole planet or star is definitely a nice piece of weaponry to have.:)

I hope you're not asking about what Voltron is. It's like only one of
the best action cartoons ever produced (besides maybe the Transformers).
Basically there were 2 versions where you had members of a team ride in
vehicles (one was mechanical lions and the other version had regular
vehicles). When they couldn't defeat the enemy individually, they joined
to become Voltron, which was a composite robot composed of all the
individual vehicles. As a kid I preferred the lions. So in effect they
mean they become this big unstoppable force when their team joins
together....

I swear I know this show as G-Force. Each had their own power and vehicle,
altho I do not remember them being animals or anything..

There was a fat guy, a really small guy, a woman, a hero type guy, and
someone else. One was the head of the big thing, one an arm, one a leg, etc..

And I could swear when they formed they said something about Voltron...
and they said G-Force a whole lot.

I agree with Infinite. But Voltron was like a take off of G-Force.
G-Force was made in the late 70s and Voltron came out in the mid 80s.
Its sorta like how Martin was a take on the Jefferson's. George
(Martin) main character w/ all the jokes, Louise (Gina) agreeable
spouse, annoying neighbor the British guy (Shanaynay). It's like they
updated the formula for the times. But Voltron is definitely with the 5
lions (Black (the head), green, yellow, orange, and blue). ANd when
they came togetehr to form Voltron, the Black tiger would always say:
And I'll form the head.

Think Atom boy, or one of those Speed racer type cartoons.
Then there was some more in the late 70's, g-force and starblazers.
But it really got big with our age group with voltron, robotech,
orbots, transformers (althought it doesn't really count as anime),
thunderbird 2086, and others. But then it died.

In some places you can see Sailormoon, or dragonball z, and others,
but for the most part anime is strictly for those who a video market.

I don't know if Speed Racer counts as anime (don't know the technical
definition), but wasn't that on before Starblazers? Also there was one
in the same vein called, like, Marine Boy or something. He had
jet-powered boots and chewed oxygen gum and had a dolphin pal.

But for a villain, wasn't Deslock a little, y'know, fruity?

(I'm just joking: Starblazers was the coolest.)

Wouldn't mind seeing a tape of some Superfriends episodes either (like
when the Legion of Doom was flying around in that base that looked like
an evil mask...)

Keep in mind that many of these shows shared the same motifs, probably
the same animators, etc. So it's easy to get confused, especially back in
the murky depths of childhood memories. But, anyway, Voltron was formed
out of Tigers; when they formed they would say "form Voltron legs," "form
arms and torso," "form head and sword," etc. There were two other
Voltrons - one made of cars and planes, another made of three robots. The
shows had totally different plots and it could get confusing when they
mixed them up. Both battled these things called "Robeasts."

G-Force & Voltron each had 5 kids with a certain color scheme for
identification. Voltron had 5 lions. G-Force (sometimes known as "Battle
of the Planets") had several different vehicles (motorcycle, jet, tank,
etc.)

Voltron was tough, but nothing could touch G-Force.

When I was a kid and lived in England, we got this cartoon actually called
"Voltron". It had the same basic premise as "The Power Rangers", except it
was a hellava lot better. I think the power rangers actually bit their shit.
It had 5 different coloured lions or whatever and they joined together to form
"Voltron", this big robot, who had a sword and battled different enemies and
shit.

Actually, Steve, I couldn't tell you. I remember G-Force from
when I live in Japan, which was between 1977-1980. I can't recall
whether it was on Saturday mornings or not over there.

However, last year, G-Force was being shown on the Cartoon
Network sometime around 2:00 in the morning. I used to watch it
religiously, but fell off over the summer. Anyone know if they still
show it?

And even though it's not anime, I've always held a special place
for the Adventurs of Batman (& Robin).

Yeah, I remember that well. That was on at the height of my comic
interest, but they didn't make a whole lot of episodes. Sentimentally, I
still go for the previous one, with all the repetitious, bugged scenes
where Spidey is cruising with webs seemingly attached to nothing but the
sky above. Very weird cartoon.

Horrible. G.I. Joe was all about war without consequences. Nobody
died, people always ejected from their planes in time. I sound like an

kids like the images, but there's a lot of serious undertones you have

It's kinda wack now with that Beast Wars shit. The old TF toys had perfect
design robots that transformed into SIX things
Headmasters
the rub-off logos
Ultra Magnus, Metroplex (and the Decepticon one)

I don't like how simple the new Beast Wars robots look and transform. They
don't look "mechanized" enough.

What i liked about the GoBots was that a) you could see the way they
transformed and b) people could fit inside of them when they did. With
transformers, sh*t would magically appear and disappear (like Optimus'
infamous trailer) Never happened with GoBots. Plus, the GoBots had
Zod... which really did do anything but terrorfy the sh*t out of the good

For real, i loved the Gummi Bears. Another good Disney cartoon. Plus,
most carttons have some type of serious or political undertones (look at
Tiny Toons and Pinky and the Brain). And those that don't, are just mad
serious (gargoyles, X-Men to an extent).

No, you're not the only one. Those cartoons get monotonous after a while. I
always hope the good guy loses. It would also be educational to the
children, give them a dose of reality.

I'm especially waiting for the Power Rangers (thought that's not a cartoon)
to loose. They always cheat! If they are almost destroyed, they get
themselves a new power from sun or whatever. And why do those damn monsters
always just stand their waiting when the PR's are making those spastic moves
when they call their robots? I would crush them.

(my little brother watches it).

Itchy and Scratchy is cool too.

When I was younger, I thought that Nemesis Enforcer was the

I like it when Wile E. Coyote would talk in his stuffy voice and

I've come to realize that Tom & Jerry is probably the greatest,

contest.

Yeah, Gargoyles is pretty good, too. Props to B. David for (I
think that's who it was) for bringing up the Gummi Bears. Does anyone
remember the episode, where the bounty hunter was hired to get the Gummi
Bears and Toady was gonna steal his bag of gold and the bounty hunter
pointed a crossbow at him, looked at him and said, "Go ahead...take my
pay."

One of the all-time greatest cartoon moments ever.

The best thing about "Spider Man & His Amazing Friends" was the
frequent connections to the Marvel Universe. The X-Men appearances were

All in all that was a sad series, cause they were the last ones left.

Tailspin. That was cool. I really liked Goof Troop also. I don't think I
hated any of the Disney Afternooon cartoons.
A lot of the ones out now are becoming more mature, like Gargoyles and
Batman.

You know, I've never thought about it, but now that you mention it, I
guess I always assumed Panthro was black. But then that goes back to a
lot of stereotypes about voice and such.

Gargoyles? I really dug that. It tried to do some issues, kinda like
X-Men did with the mutant haters. Problem is that those both seemed to
link marginialized groups (I learned a new term today, trying it out to
see what people feel) with subhumans, not a metaphor I'm really down with.

When they show them now, has that stuff (like when a cigar blows up and
Tom is in blackface) been edited out? I loved Tom and Jerry as a kid,
but I remember things like that, and I wonder how those cartoons would
seem to me now. I think the racism was pretty frequent.

Damn... ya'll remember this shit better then I do. ANyway, the

In response to Kari pointing out that Tom & Jerry was loaded
with blatant racism...

Most definitely. It was so blatant that maybe I came to expect
it. I don't know if it's good or not (probably not), but I'm able to
overlook it. There's no excuse for it and it's probably never going to
be addressed.

But I'm sorry, that cartoon is the funniest thing I've ever seen
in my life. I laugh out loud, by myself. The stuff is so basic and
lowbrow, and it's the same thing over & over. But, damn, it's
entertaining.

And B. David made a point about non-human creatures being used
to portray marginalized ;) groups in the Gargoyles cartoon and the
X-Men comic book. Y'know, I've been reading X-Men for 13 years and
about 6-7 years ago, I realized that the mebers of the group that I
associated the most with were the Beast and Nightcrawler, because their
appearance made them outcasts. Storm is "black", but she's African.
Bishop is from 70+ years ahead in some post-apocalyptic future. What
does he know about being black?

definitely. Before I got old enough to completely understand racism, I

It's pretty sick to think of how much racism I was exposed to by things
like that as a child. I remember when there was a chain of restaurants
called "Sambo's."

On a related note to the cartoon/superhero talk, does anyone remember
Mantis? Show was on not too long ago. But the thing that impressed me
wasn't the show, but the premier movie the series was based on. It had
some problems of its own, but I remember it was really cool in that it
showed a group of black characters who had different upbringings,
philosophies, and didn't say that one was better than another. One scene
in particular, where one guy with a more "ghetto" upbringing meets a
woman with a college scholarship background, and is like, "Oh, you're
one of those affirmative action types." Unfortunately, the series got
rid of all of that.

Word. My brother wants to be a cartoonist & he's real deep into Loony
Tunes. They diss blacks, asians, native americans & whoever else. One of
thier 1st characters was Bosco & I'll be damned if he isnt supposed to be a
blackfaced white guy. Since they started editing violence & racism from old
cartoons its kind of weird to watch them. Just not the same!

Its so unbelieveably Phat to me that so many of us thought the same things. I
always thought destro was black also. I had seen something where he took off
his mask and you could see the back of his head, and I knew he wasnt black, but
I always maintained that he WAS black, even after I knew he Really wasnt.
Wierd. Maybe it was the Jordan-esque Bald head.
I remember around 1984 I had a Destro Action figure (I used to call them
dolls, but I want you to get a better mental figure of what I'm talking about)
and It had the same silver head that he had on the cartoon. For some stupid
reason, I traded it to my friend, and they discontinued the destro with the
silver head. Years later, they re-manufactured the Destro GI Joe toy, but only
with a gold head. A gold HEAD?? WTF?? Where the hell did they get that Idea
from? Does anyone know why they did this, and Does anyone know what I'm
talking about?

I know how you feel. All those 80's anime shows were nearly
inter-changeable.

I don't think I ever saw Voltron, but I did catch G-Force a lot cus
that show was on point. HEre's what I remember... 5 people that had some
sort of secret base, I think it was underwater. They had this cool ship
and, when neccessary, each member could detach from the mothership in
their own little vehcle. They had some cool uniforms with capes, white
with each member having a unique trim color. I don't think they formed
into anything bigger then them, thoguh I think they did the ol' pyramid
tactic to intimidate their foes.. I think they had their own unque attacks
as well, but I'm not sure. Everything else is just a alchohol-induced
blur...

Then who the hell were the Thundercats? I thought they were the 5
lions
that turned into something bigger?

The Inhumanoids were a bit different from the rest of the animated
series' of it's day. Nothing transformed ala The Transformers, nobody
joind together to bcome a
huge robot. The bad guys were a collection of, well, Inhumanoids, from
deep below the surface of the earth. They were all pretty ugly and if they
touched a human that would kick off a pretty gruesome transformation into
a lesser Inhumaoid. The good guys were similar in size and strength but of
the "defender of the earth" archtype. ANd they had help from humans who
wear cool power armor. There were pretty much two types of shows. Either
the bad guys would attack the surface, or the god guys would go
underground to hunt down the In. But yea, this show was phat and it had
something of a cult following if I remember correctly. Maybe I'll check on
the web...

Chips? Well, maybe:) The X-Men appearances were cool as hell though.
I still remember the only time I saw my favorite comic character,
Nightcrawler, animated. Spiderman was up in the X-Men training room
practicing some new moves and the X-Men showed up,. Unfortunately, I
thinkProf. X and WOlverine got all the dialog. But it's all good cus
everyone knows that Nightcrawler would kick SPidey's ass up and down any
block in NYC.

ANybody else wish they were a mutant after reading the X-Men?

Joe did lose to Cobra, remember when they tried to stop them from getting the
DNA to Serpentor? Tomax and Xamot walked right past the joes and got Napoleon's
DNA....

The Decepticons... hell they won so much it wasn't pitiful... and their decendants
(y'all ARE watching the new Transformers cartoon, right? More classic shit....)
the Predacons just killed off Optimus Prime (again).

Lion-O was a little punk. And that sword got broke not once, not twice, but THREE
times! Damn, a one trick pony with a weak weapon!

He-Man was cool, but looking back now, it had mad repetitive animation.

Speed Racer aged the best of the old cartoons tho. Corny as hell, but it doesn't
grate on my nerves like Battle of the Planets does now....
