I saw the kid Chino on rap city a while back. I don't really get off on
alternative rap but he had some crazy lyrics. his style is like Ras Kaas
on speed. I saw him on VIBE too. I just wanted to know what the group
thought of him. haven't heard much from peeps about him.

What are you talking about, "alternative rap"?!? In no way, shape or form
is Chino XL "alternative rap". His music is straight up, raw hip hop in
the purest form. What makes you think he is "alternative"? Because he
doesn't talk about bustin' caps, drinkin' 40's and shit like that?
Anyway, you want an opinion on him? I like Chino XL a lot. I've been a fan
of his ever since I heard him in the group, Art of Origin, not too long
ago when someone put me in tune to their joints. I was also able to peep
the LP before it was released. His lyrics are exceptionally tight and the
beats on the album are definitely nice. You won't find any recycled
samples or rhymes on that joint. As far as Chino being "the king of
metaphors", I would have to disagree somewhat. True, he's about the only
one out now that is almost completely on the simile/metaphor tip that
takes out the others (i.e. Mad Skillz, Lord Finesse, Big L, etc.), but he
pushes it too far. The use of the words "like", "as", "more", and "than"
in his rhymes are way over their quota. If you want to do METAPHORS and
not SIMILES and be on that tip, you can almost completely eliminate "like"
or "as" if you have the writing skill. I just get tired of hearing the
words, especially from a lot of mediocre MC's that are out there now who
think they're coming off clever - whatever.
So, if you're a fan of true hip hop, you shouldn't be disappointed with
Chino XL's "Here to Save You All" LP. But, please, don't throw Chino in
the "alternative rap" category.

I understand what Choco was trying to say about Chino being alternative
rap. Just look at the No Complex video. I think however once you listen
to the rest of the tape you understand that Chino represents hiphop to the
fullest with the exception of that song I also thought that Shabba Doo
Conspiracy can in a way be considered alternative rap.

straight up, that's how Chino came off at first to me. but if you read
my original post, i gave Chino his props. actually, I'm listening to him
now. did anyone see the interview on Rap City? he himself admitted not
that he creates "alternative rap" but his rock record label gives him that
image.

Chino is phat. Word to death, Chino rocks the mic righteously enough to be "Here to save you all." He
kinda reminds me of Smoothe Da Hustler to be honest. They both have raw styles, but CHino is more
lyrically potent, Smoothe is just more serious and a "reality rapper." One great thing about Chino is the
fact that he didn't wait until later to tell everyone who he doesn't like.

Chino XL is definitely a breath of fresh air from the lyrical standpoint.
Also the album's production has a definite flava of its own. However, he
does tend to say Like and As too much. But, that seems to be his style.
And his similes are quite dope and original:"I'm so def I need closed
captions..."

Actually it does to most kids...I myself sometimes catch myself calling kids goofy white kids, and then
realize that my moms is white and my dad is black...So when Chino did that song "Who am I" I was
touched for real. I could relate, to say the fucking least. I've heard all that shit...
But the real thing remains, we really need to be honest with ourselves. When we see a white kid trying
to get up and rip a mic, he has to be at least 10 times better than just a regular minority kid. But then
again...The world isn't perfect...Bring back the Crews, breaking, and the original b-bwoys!

Actually, I don't judge white kids like that. If a white kid starts
flowing, I'm going to close my eyes and hear what he has to say and judge
him strictly on skills. It's going to be the same way with any MC,
regardless of ethnicity. We've got to realize that we LISTEN to hip hop
music the majority of the time (the other half would be videos and shows).
Maybe it's true that a white kid should have to pay extra dues to enter
the game, but what about the other opressed minorities besides Blacks and
Latinos that didn't take part in the roots of hip hop, i.e. Asians and
Indians? I think that's something to think about if you want to get
technical.

grew up with Chino, we both went to skool in Montclair, N.J., and
both of us used to rock with Kaoz, his boy from Art of Origin (who
was a phukkin genius), but not at the same time...I must've been
rockin with Scratchmaster K, his name before Kaoz, from like 85-87,
we were both DJz, now I rip mikes and do beats...but goin to skool
in Montclair was phukked up. Sistaz wanted mofoz who looked like
Chino. I remember that nigga being a pretty boy mofo who all the
girlz thought was so cute BE-cause of his light skin and straight
hair. Plus he was a popper back then, tho he later rocked the
mike. I was like mad confused when I heard "Who/What am I?" I was
like fool, YOU had all the P...I guess that brother had it ruffer
than I knew...Anyway, I had the same shit that I'm sure plenty
brotherz can relate to. You one of a few brotherz in a skool full
of mad white folks. Social life sucks...Whites always was aking
you to break for'em, most white chicks won't given it up to you
cause they thought they would turn black or something, only a
couple a sistaz, and they ain't the finest things on earth, the

This Only At Night," from Doug E. Fresh, that was the type of
hip-hop I wanted to make. Apparently, AOO had the same influences,
Kaoz had beats from far away, his uncle was a DJ and had a wall
covered w/crates. We had 45s taped to 12", all the old breaks with
the octopus on'em, all types of shit, we used to make beats on my
synsonics, K had a casio and a Commodore computer, he used to play
that shit by ear and he was awwwesssomme on it. I remember one
time he played some shit that Chino had did, it turned out homes
was playing the theme to Halloween by ear to a drum trak...oh, shit
was real, it was insane....anyway, now that every body is using up
my vibes and acid sounds I'ma go in another direction and do some
crazy shit foolz ain't never heard before, I might also phukk with
some obscure classical, I got these 78s I'ma about to dust
