I have a new PC for Christmas. The PC constantly shuts down when selecting
something from the start menu or Internet Explorer

When Windows shows the error it says it is fro a driver, but does not know
which one.
Sometimes, I do get a error PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA or error
NV4_DISP.DLL

I have updated to WIN XP SP1 and all updates on Windows update site, but
still have same problem. Have not installed any software yet because of
this problem. I reinstalled WIN XP one time already because of this
problem.

A7V8X motherboard with Lan, raid and sound
board 1.04
bios av8x4m10
400 watt power supply
Windows XP Pro
AMD 2400+
512 Memory PC2700
2 30 GB hard drives
Video MSI G4MX440VTD8X
CDRW
Modem externial USR Courier V everything

Any help out there on this would be appreciated.

Run Memtest86 v3.0 to give your memory system a thorough testing. You
should be able to make a few full passes w/o any errors. If you get any
errors you should be suspect of the memory module(s). Do you have one
stick of 512MB or two sticks of 256MB?

Also I had a very strange problem where I was getting memory errors
until I cleared the CMOS. Make sure you do it properly otherwise you
could burn out the CMOS itself. It's very simple though:
1. Shutdown and remove the power plug.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Short/jumper the clear CMOS jumper or contacts for about 3sec or so.
4. Remove jumper or stop shorting the pins.
5. Reinstall the battery.
6. Again, make sure you don't have the clear CMOS jumper connected.
7. Plug in the power and boot up.

FWIW, I'm running an A7V8X rev 2.01 with BIOS 1010 and two 512MB sticks
of Corsair XMS PC2700 CAS 2.0 memory. The system is flawless under
WinXP SP1 with the VIA 4in1 Drivers v4.43 and NVIDIA Detonator v40.72
WHQL drivers.

After uninstalling the MSI MX440-VTD8X video drivers the PC is stable.

Anyone know how to fix this so I can use the MX440 video drivers

Drivers issues all the way... which drivers do you use???

If you use nVidia 2.0 Chipset drivers then you don't need to install
anything else since they already include the video driver. And if you
need to install some video driver INSTALL latest nVidia ones... not
those crappy ones that comes with the video card.

It tried the drivers 3100 that came with the board. Uninstalled them and
installed the beta nVidia VGA Driver v4072. Had to uninstall them because I
had the same problem. For now I am not using any drivers other than Windows
VIDEO Controller (VGA Compatable) Can't get the PC to work with any of the
NVidia drivers. I have not found in Windows XP Pro where I can install any
other drivers like you could in Windows 98me.

Got any suggestions.

For me, the removal of the video card driver, followed by stable operation,
indicates there is a problem with the AGP/videocard interface.

Some random things to try:

1) Latest 4in1 drivers ? Maybe there is a AGP tweak in the latest
driver, for the KT400.
2) BIOS - PCI Latency setting. Currently 32 ? Try setting to 24 or 16
and then reinstall the MX440 driver.
3) BIOS - adjust the AGP speed or fast write settings ? Also, I notice
the A7V8X manual has AGP strength settings. Try forcing the AGP speed
to 4X or 2X, then try adjusting the strength down one notch at a time
for P and N, at the same time.

It looks like the A7V8X has plenty of AGP knobs to adjust. Try those
first before returning the video card and/or motherboard. I wasted
three weeks on a TUA266 before giving up on making AGP work :-(

Also, if you have trouble with memory (as identified by running
memtest86 for a while), try making the memory frequency the same as
the FSB frequency, to see if that reduces the errors to zero.

If you lose track of all the BIOS hacks, you can always set it back
to defaults using the Exit menu.
