If you decided two construct intersecting runways right at the North pole,
what would you designate them as? Runway 18/18, and Runway 18/18??

You mean north magnetic pole, right?

I believe the only person who can answer that question accurately is Santa
Clause and unfortunately he is kinda busy this time of year.

Clever question though! If you are at the North pole wouldn't it be Rwy
36/36 and 36/36? Actually only half of the runway would be 36 and the other
half would be 18 so if you had a displaced threshold you could literally
take off Rwy 18 and land Rwy 36 both in the same direction (or the other way
around).
Hmmm. Interesting.

When flying that far North all runways, VOR's etc are referenced to True
North not magnetic.

Wouldn't matter,
unless they floated, or Hudson bay has alot of Ice in it, you wouldn't have
time to paint the numbers.

No, I dont think you would.
At the Mag N Pole, you would have to have them as 36/36, because at the
threshold of each runway, they would be pointing 360 degrees. therefore all
threshold's would be labelled 36.

Actually, thinking about it, you're right, it would be 36 for the first
half, and 18 for the next half. Santa must get awfully confused with his ATC
Clearances :-)

In article <75ck9m$neo$5...@news.mel.aone.net.au>,

so if I departed from the intersection I would be taking off on 18 on every
runway even though they actually have 36 painted on all their threasholds.
no wonder santa clause only makes one take off a year. cowboy

OK Cowboy,
Even though I did not state it, I was referring to beginning the landing or
take-off from the ends of the runways, not the middle :^)

Spose it depends on which pole you're talking about. At the geographical
pole both rwys would still retain a mag direction.

How about this:

The north pole actually has south polarity and visa-versa for the south
pole.

Why?

Well how could your compass point to a pole unless the magnetic pole was
the opposite of the compass? Basic physics. :) (Remember N-N/S-S
repels but N-S/S-N attracts)

Cheers,

James

Most of the answers so far have been about a pole. If you are lame
[lame=can not walk] use one of the poles as a walking stick [hahaha!]
