I have an Indy with R4600sc/133 cpu module. I also have an IDT R4700/133 cpu
from a Xerox/Fiery GPU. The docs say the cpu's are pin- and voltage
compatible. Would the 4700 work in the Indy, and if so, would it provide
any performance gain?

If you write a ROM that allows the Indy to recognize it, may be.

I plugged it in and the v.11 prom recognises it correctly as a mips R4700
(hinv). IRIX 6.5.16 works fine. Dunno if it's any faster, though. Guess I
could set up some benchmarks sometime.

Funny... And what are the difference between R4600 and R4700 supposed to
be?

Damned if I know. Looked at some pdf docs on IDT's website but didn't learn
much. Same size I and D cache, though, and both have an FPU. Maybe the 4700
has some additional instructions? A newer mfg process? Both are regarded as
obsolete, anyway...

I also have a machine running with a R4700 (not a SGI machine though) and
always
thought the R4700 was meant for embedded applications. I pulled this from
groups.google.com:

With an interesting bit about reprogramming the clockrate and divisor of the
CPU module. Since I've heard of people doing this, I suppose the data format in
the EEprom is available somewhere, does anyone know where?

It irix 6.2 has some mentionings of an r4700 indy in it too... But I
just thought they were there for some experimental reasons.
