Ladies and Gentlemen, I am in dire straits. Since 1994, I have
provided a service to the online sex community such as
soc.sexuality.general, its relatives (soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm) and
its ancestors (alt.sex, alt.sex.wizards), and myriad websites and
mailing lists, as the host of the alt.sex FAQ, a large and mostly ad-hoc
collection of wisdom put together by whatever team was willing to
assemble and edit what could possibly be known about sex.

It's out of date in some ways, but some things never change,
like anatomy, and good advice on how to lose your virginity is as still
precious today as it was a decade ago.

I'll be blunt: I'm losing net access.

My ISP is going under, my account has been sold to Earthlink,
and I have been informed by Earthlink that the content, size, and
traffic generated by my website are inappropriate for "a personal site."
I might be able to salvage my stories; they generate less traffic and
they're much more meaningful to me, so I'm keeping those close to home,
and I'm going to be finding a new ISP as soon as possible. In the
meantime, though, I'm hosed.

There are an estimate 10,000 people linking to the alt.sex FAQ.
That means that on July 1st 10,000 links are going to go down and the
web will contract a little in size. That sucks massively.

If you could do me the favor finding a home for the FAQ, a
mirror somewhere, preferably more than one, until I find a way to host
them myself, and the gods only know when that will be, that would be the
best thing. Keep the FAQ alive; maybe someone else wants to take and
edit it.

Thanks in advance. Keep me posted.

Elf

Elf, siva and i can mirror the FAQ at Lucky Mojo, among our 5,000 web
pages. I will attempt to get siva to copy it tonight or tomorrow. Will
you put up a redirect page? If not, how will folks find the mirror
site(s)? Let's talk!

Hi Elf,

Blunt question: how much MB do the FAQ occupy?

409 K. Remember, they were coded in 1994, when 9.6Kbaud was the standard.

Hi,

Man, I love that ;-)

I can easily mirror it on my server, but I have the same question than
Catherine about the redirection. How do you intend to do it?

Please email me if you wish.

They're only 409K in size. That's *tiny*. Here's the real
problem:

Last month there were 1 million access of the Alt.sex FAQ in
total. Each page averages approximately 18K in size, which,
like I said, is tiny, but add it up and it's 18 gigabytes of data
transfer per month! We're talking serious bandwidth.

<--massive snippage-->

can you give an estimate of

a.) how many megs the size occupies

and, more importantly

b.) how much traffic does it generate (approx, per day)

... a lot depends on these answers, really.

Dear Elf --

The alt.sex FAQ has now been mirrored at luckymojo.com. All the text is
readable, all the gifs are all visible, and all the links are working
just fine. Everything is perfect, except for two minor (non-essential)
bugs:

1) The web ring links are obviously non-functional since they point to
your about-to-be-defunct halcyon.com site. We need the script changed --
Elf, can you do that for us?

2) For reasons we cannot fathom, the colour bars along the left side of
the original pages are incomplete on our copies. Any help from
tech-wizards would be appreicated -- please take a look and tell us what
to do to fix it.

You can reach the mirror site through these three major links:

http://www.luckymojo.com
(our site map; scroll down to find the alt.sex FAQ link)
http://www.luckymojo.com/sacredsex.html
(Sacred Sex site; the alt.sex FAQ is listed under "Resources")
http://www.luckymojo.com/faqs.html
(alphabetical list of all usenet FAQs at our site)

As they say on the internet,

"Hope This Helps!"

Elf and all --

This should have been a follow-up to a post i made last night,
announcing that the alt.sex FAQ had been mirrored at luckymojo -- but
like all my posts announcing sex-education-related URLs, that post was
held up in the moderation process (presumeably waiting for a human being
to check that the sites were not porn :-) ). I know from experience that
it'll probably take 4 days for the post to be moderated and appear here.
So here we go again. Sigh.

This is a notice-sans-URL to inform you that you can now find the entire
alt.sex FAQ at luckymojo -- which ends with a dot com. (See, i did it
without an URL, hence it'll post quickly). Just Sscroll down the page
and find the little blue-and-gold alt.sex FAQ logo and click on it. Or
after the domain name, write a slash and then the word faqs, followed by
another slash and then the word altsex .

There are two other major entry-points to the FAQ as well -- one is from
the luckymojo FAQs Archive (we maintain dozens of them for vairous
newsgroups) and the other is as a listing under "Resources" in my
popular Sacred Sex web site. Both of the FAQs Archive and Sacred Sex are
also at luckymojo and they can be accessed via the top-lvel page, as
they have their own little icons.

Also, while i'm posting, i should make a quick follow-up to my previous
mention of a problem we had last night with the background bars -- this
has already been resolved, of course; siva hadn't copied over all of the
teensy-tinsy background gifs that create the colour bars.

But, Elf, we still have the web ring issue to deal with: you need to
notify the ring members to change their links from the halcyon location
to the luckymojo location (which i won't give out here because then this
post would be held up in moderation for days! ;-)

And you never answered my question about how you will notify the 10,000
folks with links to the halcyon page -- they'll just turn up 404s unless
you write a redirect of some kind. Eventually the search engines will
re-spider the luckymojo site and list the new location, but all those
hand-made links from other sites will be lost unless you send out some
sort of email message to the web-masters involved telling them to
re-make their links from halcyon to luckymojo.

Well, in any case, the alt.sex FAQ is now safe and comfy in its new
home. It was a pleasure being able to do the job.

Elf,

ASSTR would be more than willing to assist in any way
possible. If you own your own domain name, we can do everything from
hosting your web site (and keeping the existing links in tact) to
forwarding your email to you to helping w/ newsgroup moderation to
providing domain name servers - all for 100% free to everyone. We're
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and oversee moderation of the
alt.sex.stories.moderated newsgroup. We also provide a web archive of
the newsgroup and free web and FTP space to over 500 authors of erotic
literature. We've been around since '96, so we have some experience
with what we do :)

Let me know (preferably via email if possible) if there's
anything we can do.
