Is there a site that does any of the following things. 1-Ranks club
teams 2- Lists their overall records(and possibly who their wins and
losses were against) 3-Lists tourny results ?
if there is, could someone please copy and paste the page or a link.
thanks

The National Open Director asked for teams to submit how they did against
Nationals teams from other regions this year and at what strength their
team was in each tournament. He also included the results of last year's
Nationals.

Here is what captains sent back:

Nationals Teams Seasonal Results
(in order received)

DoG

Boston Invitational, June 1-2, 2002, sent two teams (full squad plus
tryouts, split evenly)
DoG1 went 6-2. Lost in finals to Ring of Fire, beat Machine in semis,
beat Pike in quarters.
DoG2 went 4-2. Lost in quarters to Ring of Fire, lost in pool play to
E-Pig.

Worlds, August 4-10, 2002, full team.
11-1, 2nd place. Lost to Condors in finals. Beat Furious George in
semis, Johnny Bravo in quarters. Beat Sockeye in pool play.

Tuneup, September 7-8, 2002, full team
7-1, 2nd place. Lost to E-Pig in finals. Beat Ring in semis. Beat
Subzero, Chain and Pike in pool play.

Vicious Cycle

Vicious has not played against any qualifying teams this season.

We are back to a full strength Vicious squad. Many (about 1/2) of our
players played on the Team Florida Teams the last three years but not all
and some of those that played on that team did not play that much..

Any history that a team has against some other "vicious" squad should be
taken with a grain of salt. We are a much different team these days. We
are young but athletic. Many (about 6 - 8) of our players will play in
the college season in the spring.

PBR Streetgang

Condors1 lost 15-9 at reg.

Boss Hogg

We played out-of-region nationals qualifiers at four tournaments this
year. If "full strength" is defined by our UPA Series roster and the
players we will have in Sarasota, our teams could be characterized as
follows:
At Terminus in March, we had about half of our team.
At the Boston Invite in June, we were close to full strength.
At Purchase Cup in July, we were close to full strength.
At Chicago Tuneup in September, we were missing four D-team starters.

Sub Zero

Chicago Machine
W 13-9 March (Terminus)
L 11-10 June (Boston Invite)

the only results that seem to matter to the CLUBBERS is last year's

Yeah, Sub Zero sent a small crew to Cooler and beat Machine and
Madison, but they don't claim it in their performance for this year.
That's because Cooler was in 2002, and it doesn't matter...

Here is a sample of club team ratings for a season that started on June
1 2002. No allowances were made for tryouts or split squads. Each team
is given a rating for each game reported. All games
are given the same weight and all teams start out with the same
rating. Upsets result in a higer(or lower) rating than a close game
among equals. I have some results from the following tournaments and
rated 123 teams

Henlopen (1 gamne)
Solstice (2 games)
SMUT (3 games)
MasonDixon (3 games)
Purchase (9 games)
Kleinman (1 game)
MonumentGames (3 games)
Cooler (10 games)
Tune-Up (16 games)
Worlds - complete
BostonInvite (12 games)
SantaCruz (3 games)
NoSurf (4 games)
Choptank (11 games)
Sectional reports on RSD and www.upa.org
Regional Reports on RSD and www.upa.org

Its interesting to note that WUFF Warriors come in this rating at #6,
(1346), ahead of DOG even after their regional losses. Pre-regional
analysis puts them ahead of EPig.

The highest Non-UPA team is the BuzzBullets (Japan), coming in at #21
(1187).

Viscious Cycle's rating has very little connection to the rest of the
nation as they have only 4 games (all from regionals) reported.

Hmmm... well Ring lost to EPig alone 3 times (Choptank, Purchase,
Regionals)... lost to Wuff at sectionals certainly... and also must have had
at least one other loss at tuneup... I don't know if these rankings are
looking for updated accuracy, but they aren't quite accurate yet.

Now this was the most worthwhile thing I have read in a long time. Nice
work and a good first run of something that seems to have found some
interest in our normally"all's well"-status-quo sport. Like the college
algorithm there are some curious revelations and interesting issues attached
(i.e. games reported, number necessary for ranking, etc). Seriously, this
is a work of art for this usenet and productive forward thinking. Will
there be more? I'm of no use in the algorithm since I am an English
teacher, but willing to debate and do any technical writing necessary (for a
nominal fee...I'm a teacher, I need the money).

Chris,

It would be interesting to see your full list. Also, is JAM your 5th
rank team? That's a pretty high seed not to be involved in the UPA
Championship.

Well the score reporting in the open division is terrible! And when is
Atlas the same as Chain? Has Tune-up ever been reported anywhere yet?
I got the 13 tune-up scores from random RSD posts. I KNOW teams played
more, lost more, won more...but without a stab at a numeric score I
can't include the results.

To paraphrase Famuel Fohnfon; it's astonishing to see it done at all: not
that it is done well.

CVH goes through what I imagine was a pretty stupendous effort to compile
tournament results from a dozen sources just to prove that Club teams can
be ranked by algorithm, and what's his response?

"My team only had six starters at Mudbowl, and head to head, and you
didn't include our results from joe shmo's coed challenge, and my mom says
we're better than Ring, and head to head, and that can't be right, and you
need to work on your algorithm, and head to head, and I'm going to go cry
now..."

Very nice job, Chris. Now get a score reporter, and we get a new arena
for abuse in our silly arguments about regional strength and bids to
nationals and pre-tournament seedings.

Ah...the full list. The full list suffers from, among other things,
random score reporting. That's why I just sent out the Championship
qualifiers. More scores and more overlap would be needed to eliminate
the "we only played 4 games against our farm-team" effect. And I only
reported teams with 4 or more scores. This was the cut-off because
that's how many Vicious had. I would have liked to make this limit
higher.

And don't take this trial run as anything but that.. an experiment
and demonstration of what could be possible, not a statement of the
way it is.

I've added a few scores of several more Tune-up games that people have
sent me. Obviously one is the Chain loss to DOG at tuneup. With these
additions things have shifted a little. And by now, you know me

"If you post them, I will rank"

Jam comes in at 17th suffering, I think, from their worlds elimination
by Sockeye, failure to attend tune-up, and woeful west coast tourney
score reporting.

... And Asheville didn't even make regionals... hmmm...

(Yes, I would say those rankings aren't exactly perfect)

Here's a season of results from June 1 through 'Nationals' from teams
having 5 or more games. 707 games recorded with 209 teams in the game
lists. Nearly 400 of the games are from the UPA series.

My algorithm for giving each team a rating is as follows:

A game differential is calculated for each game

350
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Loser's Score/Winner's Score)**2)+(Winner's Rating/Loser's Rating)**2)

The winner gets the average rating between the two opponets plus the
game differential, The loser gets the average rating between the two
opponets minus the game differential.

Pretty cool...has some possibilities. We should definitely try it as
a ranking tool for the upcoming season. Maybe we can look into how
"power rankings" work for other sports - i.e. what's the formula for
NCAA Football... Shouldn't be too hard to get scores reported better
from appropriate tourneys if the TD's know that its all going into the
mix to get out the Rankings (competitive people like that kinda
stuff).

Maybe someday (soon?) we can use this to help us pick out deserving
invites to the Show, and seed teams appropriately at tourney for the
particular year.

Let's keep it in mind over the winter and start putting it into effect
in the spring. I'll help you out if you wanna keep putting in the
effort.

Two polls, a bunch of computer rankings, and ad-hoccery with several
other rankings to try to get it all to work out "right." (personal
observation -- sometimes, when the statistics don't agree with your
assumptions, it's your assumptions that should be adjusted, not the
statistics. not always, but sometimes.)

There's varying amounts of detail available on the exact workings of
the computer rankings. Ken Massey goes into a lot of detail about
his. Sagarin does not. Don't know about the rest.
