Apparently, a group of South Carolina parents is trying to have Ye
Olde Harry Potter books banned from schools because they
promote witchcraft.

Yeah, that's great, folks. You do that. Try and ban the only thing
to come along in years that actually got your children interested
in reading. (And a week of depressing news gets worse.
MAN, do people suck...)

Actually, I think they are...certainly I've heard the Christian Right

I think there are irate prents all over who will ban anything, regardless of
the fact that they know nothing about it. My mom has a friend who read a
book (to her all black class of 2nd graders) called "Nappy Hair", a humerous
account of why blacks have hair different from Europeans. The kids loved
it! They thought it was imaginative and touching. Of course, a week later,
there was a big protest- the teacher was obviously PUTTING DOWN blacks by
reding this book WRITTEN BY A black person and HONORING BLACK HERITAGE!
Yes, we can't have that!...

None of the protestors had kids in the class, btw, and comments were printed
in the paper like, "I haven't read the book myself, but from the name I can
tell it is racist!"

Sigh...

This <7u56t4$272$1...@calchas.it.luc.edu>-ing article from Joel Cunningham on Thu, 14 Oct 1999 13:18:10 -0500 has warped my fragile little mind:

I believe her story made national headlines. The upshot was the teacher
quit her class, much to the delightof the protesters, with one or two of
the protestors wary that she may... want to teach again and READ THAT

Dammit, I just depressed myself. Let me go rent "Mr Smith Goes to

Yes, there is an effort to get Sabrina off the air. I discovered this
while doing research for The Bewitched Project (Bewitched was also on
ABC).

I don't know anything about any current efforts to get the show banned, but
here's part of the "Focus on the Family" review of "Sabrina":

". . . .The very idea of a show about a witch may immediately alienate
Christian families. And it should (Deut. 18:9-13, Micah 5:12, Gal. 5:19-21).

. . .It would seem, at first glance, that Christians could easily excuse
Sabrina's magical powers as merely harmless tools used to teach thoughtful life
lessons. After all, even C.S. Lewis used "magic" in his classic tales of
Narnia. But Sabrina crosses a significant and non-negotiable line by using
witchcraft as the source of the magic. Alchemy books. Cauldrons of potions full
of lizard tongues and newt hearts. Incantations, spells and sorcery.
Divination. Wizardry. All of which fly in the face of God's direct command to
never practice witchcraft in any form. There are no "white witches" to God. "

Just wanted to pop in and remind everyone about how "Christian Right
Parents" had the _Strega Nona_ books banned from some schools.

That's right! The charming kindergarten books about the helpful witch
who solves people's problems, written and illustrated by Tomie
DePaola, the man who also wrote/illustrated at least 12
Christian-related books, including "The Miracles of Jesus", and
countless othe kid classics such as "The Cloud Book" and "Pancakes for
Breakfast".

Fun fun fun!

Jesus (see that, Concerned Parents?), one wrong step and they jump
down your throat!

So, basically what they're saying here is that Jesus and his
accredited Freinds are the only ones who can help, heal, or perform
miracles.

Otherwise it's the work of S-t-n.
Well, I may just as well give up trying to help my fellow man and all
that crap!

Man, someone needs to give these Concerned Parents Valium, or
something...

Heh.
Yep.
It's a story about a little girl who wouldn't comb her hair.
They then had a conference at the school, and the techer laughed
nervously - a compulsive habit.
The mob of angry persons (can't be un-PC and call them "Stupid
Fuckers", can we? that'd be unkind to the barren ones!) rushed the
stage, and it took the principle and several other teachers (I think)
to protect the poor teacher.
The court later overturned the mob demand that she should be fired,
sued, lynched, drawn and quartered, and have her head impaled upon a
pike upon the city gate (I'm probably kidding about the last 3), but
the teacher was so outraged she quit in protest.
So, long story short, Stupid Fuckers ruined a great thing for innocent
parents and children.

[singing w/ piano accomp.] And that's what makes the world go
'ro-o-ound!

There are some people who truly believe what Jerry Falwell once said: That
the only book good Christians need to read is the Bible.

Personally, I'd like to see a law passed that if you protest or complain
about the content of a book or film without having seen/read it, I (or a
designated proxy) should get to hit you in the head with a sack full of
doorknobs.

A rider to this bill would extend this proviso to complaining about
elected officials when you didn't vote in the last election.

Here in Mesa, some illiterate parents are trying to get Huck Finn pulled
from schools because it contains the word "nigger" and what could children
learn from that? Yes, we must never forget that Twain was a staunch
advocate of racism...

Never saw PRIEST, but I *did* just tape LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST
off Bravo the other day. (Taped off TV because neither Blockbuster
nor Hollywood Video apparently have the testicular fortitude to keep
it on the shelf...)

I have yet to watch it. This makes me want to see it even *more*.

BTW, I'm really *hoping* there are protesters when I see DOGMA on
opening night, Nov. 12. Just so I can say I broke picket lines to
see it. Who knows -- maybe I'll get confrontational and make a
total ass of myself! Stay tuned. :-)

Hey, I went to see the Sensations exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum this
weekend. When I arrived, right as the museum was opening, there was no
line, and not wait, and no protesters. However, when we left, several
hours later, not only were there protesters armed with bullhorns and
chanting the lords prayer, the lines of people who were there to
actually see the exhibit were extending down and around the block.

One official at the museum said that they couldn't have paid for the
publicity Mayor Giuliani and the protestors brought the museum. <Shrug>
I think it's interesting that one person or groups outrage makes stuff
more desireable to another group.

The interesting thing is that a line removed in the translation
actually attributes Kiki's witch's powers to God. "Witch's blood,
artist's blood, baker's blood... God gives everyone some special
talent. But it can really make life difficult for you."

I still wonder whether there would have been more uproar or less
