White Laptop for Windows

My husband and I recently purchased an IBM Thinkpad to replace our desktop
computer and have it put it on our kitchen desk until the old PC can be
moved off the computer desk upstairs. We find we love the convenience of it
in the kitchen, however I don't like having a black laptop in my all-white
kitchen.

My question: Is there a white laptop for Windows? I am looking for
something that looks like an Apple I-Book without having the inconvenience
of having two operating systems for the two PC's.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA,
Allison Orange

After rolling on the floor for a looong while, I'll (Gad, my sides still
hurt!) point out to you that keeping any computer - and a laptop with its
fragile screen in particular - in the kitchen is baaaaaaad because of all
the grease and gunk that will accumulate on the screen (and keyboard, case,
fan blades, etc.) Don't believe me? Just run your finger on top of your
stove vent after 2 or 3 days without wiping it off...The same stuff gets on
your machine.

And answering your question: Primo - IBMs are just about the finest laptops
out there so anything else will - most likely - constitute a step-down.
Secundo - there are Windows laptops in aluminum-colored and
sort-of-off-white cases and even a tasteful (..?) Hello Kitty laptop in
pink... IBM? Nooooo!

Just paint the damn thing white, if color is so important to you.

I think Kenmore made a white laptop back in the 70's but unfortunately it
has been discontinued.

You might wanna take a look at the new Sony Z1 series on their webpage.
Those look pretty sleek and although they aren't white, I think silver is a
closer option than black if you care about color so much.

ahem...

our tuxedo cat is staring at me as i write this on my black laptop
running linux (the o.s. with the penguin mascot). i don't think kitty

have the thinkpad, so why not enjoy the view? if you really can't
stand black on white, get the ibook.

Last real white laptop I've seen was Compaq 200MMX. Sometime ago somone
figured out that white laptop is not very practical. I don't think that You
will find real white laptop this days (iBook is a toy for Barbie not a
laptop, besides it isn't all white). So You can:
- buy light laptop (light gray, light blue/green, silver)
- repaint the kitchen
- stop making it problem.

BTW: if You are so sensitive to beauty why You buy IBM?? Their notebooks are
the ugliest in the galaxy!!

What do you cook in your kitchen? Better cut down on the grease a bit

Do you need it to be a laptop? I purchased a laptop because I was
teaching and wanted to work on school stuff at home. Before I bought
the laptop I was looking at the following setup for my breakfast bar.

A nice cheap white LCD screen and a white keyboard and mouse. Pickup
a small form-factor PC and put it in the cupboard. Run the wires
through the counter and your done. Not portable but safer for the PC
it would be white, and you wouldn't clutter your counter. Possibly
even less expensive.

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/pfuca-store/ - small keyboard

http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.html?i=1798 - small PC

http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1041.html?tag=dir - displays

Just an option.

You shouldn't be afraid of grease and gunk if you only reheat TV dinners in
a microwave. Sadly, cooking real food generates all kinds impurities
:-)

Thanks Adam, not a bad idea. I wanted a laptop, but you're right, we don't
necessarily need a second one if we're willing to drill a hole through the
countertop that makes up the desk (corian).

The IBM notebooks are one of the best in the galaxy! And their keyboards are
probably second to none! The beauty or lack of it is largely a matter of
personal preference.

they aren't.

I also think the Sony slim top Z1 is a great option. It's very sweet as a
complement to decor. The color is fairly neutral and the keyboard folds up
to reveal a control window that make you think of it as a very expensive cd
player/clock radio. It so small that you can move it from room to with ease.

wan suitable laptop for it. What's wrong with that?
So what that someone live in a box? The other man live in a house which is

Yes, <sigh>, this was a serious thread and question. When I asked, I never
dreamt I would be perceived as a troll! I did not know that aesthetic
questions were "not allowed".

Checked again out on Apple's website again for more details on the I-Book
and saw one woman mention that she kept her Dell behind a door, but her
I-Book was in the middle of the living room. A woman after my own heart.
And this is probably what I will end up with.

My husband, Chip and I are both programmers and our respective offices at
work look like the typical geek environment and he chose the Thinkpad for
home strictly on function and capability, which is just fine. I didn't
realize my preferring something that looked like an I-Book would set off
such a reaction.

If you know of a white Windows laptop, H. Cho, please let me know. Thanks.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for one, the selection seems limited
to some suggested on a Japanese website, which was just a little difficult
to navigate. Allison

I understand. When I bought my last desktop case, while I was at it,
I got one that was a little nicer looking than my last and happened to
match my silver monitor. If you're going to buy another computer
anyway, why not make it match?
http://www.alienware.com/ has half a dozen colors available in a
laptop including a silver, and a light blue. no white alas.
You may want to consider that there are a number of slick looking
titanium cover PCs floating around out there as well.

Sadly, half of the geeks here only know about electronics, megahertz,
and can't phantom why anyone would want anything else other than IBM's
black.... in fact black is their coolest color <sigh>

And then there is the apparent rice cooker who have not known anything
else other than deep fry cooking and never seen an immaculate,
maid-cleaned kitchen.

What a relief to find a PC user who's aesthetically conscious. The
iBooks are truly cool. They are not only not-black, they are
translucent, milky whites. MACs rule on aesthetic and if a few grease
monkeys don't appreciate them, oh well, am sure they find caviar not
very tasteful either.

What environment do you program in? Is Windows a requirement? If so,
what is the kitchen PC for? If you are not planning on coding in your
kitchen, will the iBook do everything else you need? If so then no
problem. :-)

Cleaning is irrelevant! the grease doesn't jump off the counter on to
the screen it settles out of the air when you cook. I made the mistake
of having my pda on the counter across the from the stove when frying
and it got a film on it from just that one time.
