If anyone's seen the new Disney show Aladdin they can relate. The show's OK
I mean all the impersonations of characters voices from the movie are pretty
reasonable. Except for the Genie's. Have you heard this it sounds nothing
like Robin Williams. E-mail if you agree with this assessment if you don't
agree with me pull out your Aladdin video and listen to the difference.

I'm not sure what you can do about it, I don't think
anyone can do what Robin Williams can do as well as Robin
Williams can do it!

Is anything ever as quite as good as the original though (with the
exception of the Starwars series)?

Actually, Dan Castellaneta does an excellent Robin Williams impersonation.
He's not doing Robin Williams as the Genie on Aladdin the Series for a
very good reason. He's not allowed to. It's per an agreement they have
with Robin. In fact, when the series was in pre-production, it didn't
even include the Genie because they weren't sure they would be able to
get permission from Robin to use it. I'm glad they did. The Genie on
the series isn't supposed to do celebrity impersonations either, but
they keep slipping them in and I'm wondering how they're getting away
with it.

The reason all the other voices sound okay is because all the original
actors are doing the voices (with the exception of the Sultan).

It obviously wasn't supposed to. They clearly wanted someone who
could do a variety of voices, in a manic sort of way. At this,
Homer clearly succeeds. Seeking someone who would fulfill these
requirements AND sound like Mork would just be too much.

The funny thing is, I think Dan Castellena's Genie sounds almost
exactly the same as Robin Williams's. It kind of surprised me; I noticed a
different voice for Jasmine between "Aladdin" and "Return of Jafar" much more
than I noticed the new Genie. Of course, I'd been warned about the Genie.

I think that if Robin Williams replaced Dan as Genie's voice, people would
be bad-mouthing Robin. Castellena does just fine.

Well, now I'm so used to the Genie's voice in the Aladdin series that
Robin Williams's doing the Genie sounds kinda weird to me! I think Dan
C. is doing a great job in the series...It's not easy to mimic someone else's
voice, but I think he does pretty well.

Aside from Val Bettin doing the Sultan and of course, Dan C. doing the
genie, there are no "impersonators" doing the characters of the Aladdin
movie in the Aladdin TV show. Them's the same folks.

As to Genie: by legal agreement Dan is NOT supposed to do an impression
of Robin Williams.

Well, I read in a newspaper today that Robin Williams and Disney have
"Kissed and made up" as it were. He'll even be working on some new Disney
live action picture - maybe if there's another series of Aladdin to be
made... hmmm.
