My wife is suddenly having strange errors in her Word installation
(Word XP on Win XP). She'll be typing and apparently random characters
appear, something along the lines of 1QA\ etc. Caps lock turns on, and
sometimes a translation window opens on the side.

I have no idea what's going on. I'm not even sure that this is a Word
error rather than some other nonsense, but it's driving her crazy, and
she in turn, me. If anybody has any advice, we'd both be very
grateful.

Thanks,
Jurgen

Muckster,

Sounds like your speech recognition software is picking up stray sounds
around your computer. Make sure it is turned off or disabled.

You have the Speech option on in Word Xp. Go to tools, menu and take the
tick out of speech. If you want to disable on a long term basis, you need
to go into control panel, add and remove programs, find office xp, select
the add or modify installation option or similar wording. Then scroll
through and find speech and disable the option. You will need Office XP CD.
If you still have problems, go to Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG then on
startup tab if you have a tick in ctfmon.exe take the tick out.

If you follow the above suggestions this should get rid of the problem on a
permanent basis.

Cheers

Karen

Thanks Karen, but I don't think that's it-- she didn't have speech installed
or turned on.

Any indication to what application this translation window might belong?
What's it's title caption, for instance? This sounds almost like some
kind of Addin kicking in, if it's not speech recognition.

Is there anything listed under Tools/Templates and Addins?
