Was that before or after the National Lampoon's version? Probably
before.
You work nine to five, whatta you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don'tcha call me, 'cause I'll only moan
I owe my soul to the savings and loan
No, I don't remember the rest. Anyway, I think they only did one
verse. Note that this version is more inflation-proof.

This is a universal phenomenon. In the 1960s I was upset when they
preempted Captain Kangaroo to cover Mercury launches. Later I watched
the space launches with great enthusiasm and interest. Still later it
became a bore again. But it's OK 'cause I don't watch Captain
Kangaroo any more.

For the record, I'd like to point out that Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss)
graduated from Dartmouth and most of his stuff scans pretty well. Oh,
and Robert Frost attended here for a while. Of course, maybe we now
know why he left...

Wow, that means I approximate ten years older than you.
You wren't born on St. Patrick's Day, were you?
My first TV memory was of Kathie Lee Harvey getting belly-
vented, LIVE!, 'though only in black-and-white. Then, days
off from nursery school. Then, the mules. I still remember
thinking, "Why do they use mules? We have cars!" And I never
forget the sound of their hooves, clopping that discomfiting,
straight, slow, seemingly endless beat.
And, then, on the blurry black-and-white screen... little
John-John, saluting. Young as I was, I knew he was younger.
And I thought "poor little kid," and I felt old, the first
time.
The grownups didn't seem to mind about Harvey.
By 1968, Waldo Concrete was reporting the toll every night.
It seemed the ratio was always about 10:1 Cong to Our Boys.
Then the mules reappeared. Cities burned again. Students
were beaten on campus and in the streets. "Things fell apart,
the center could not hold. Mere anarchy was loosed upon the
world, the blood-dimmed tide was loosed, and everywhere the
ceremony of innocence was drowned." (Forgive me, I have a
Yeats infection.)
Christmas still came, and the crew of Apollo 8 overflew the
dark side, and when they could communicate they prayed for us
(find it, it's a great recording!), and then they brought back
the first brilliant, clear picture...
of Earthrise.
And as the loudest year drieux to a close, it just suddenly
got very quiet. We all just shut the fuck up. We all knew
we had the same thought. It was like they didn't even have
to land.
I'm sorry you weren't then yet sentient, my friend. Especially
for a young astronomer wannabe, I can tell you, it was drama
of the highest caliber. Even the most trusted man in America
was like a little kid on the air. I'm also sorry it's all gone
to hell since then.
At the beginning of "Are You Experienced?," I believe Jimi
references, with that clopping sound, the mules. Listening
may still imp art experience, I don't know. It brings it all
back to me. (Note to Mr. Straight: Please don't schedule
the Jimmy Seminar in contention with the Jimi Festival in
Seattle this September. Double deity duty would be daunting,
if not undoable. Oh, and thanks for turning me on to Bultman!)
(Oh, and Jay and Michele: Try taking the number 1 round trip -
starting anywhere, but staying on, making both 242d Street and
the Battery in one continuous trip. As you know, the number 1
makes _every_ stop. Then you'll be Experienced[dibs], too...
'though it sounds like you are already. That hairpin turn at
the Battery IZZ K000Ll!!!l!.)
(Oh, and Lisa: In honor of Valentine's Day, and, more importantly,
the Year of the Pig, I'd just like to say that Half-Assed Pink
is my favorite color, and, come to think of it, my favorite flavor,
and it's been _way_ too long since I said HHELLLLOOOOOOOOO _________.
I needs ta do sum snufflin' fer the truffles, know what I mean? I'm
kidding. You _well_ know. So, whaddaya say, huh, time for a good

I tend to think of Louise Erdrich (I'm pretty sure she's a '76) as a
prose author, which is why I didn't think to mention her. I don't count
Michael Dorris, since he was a professor, not an alum (hey, I'm allowed
to make my own criteria).

This is why my favorite winter sport is women's hockey (which is
pathetically undersupported) -- they actually win games. Plus, I
appreciate the finesse with which women's hockey is played.

We deeply apologize. We always attempt to refrain from giving offense, and
certainly none was meant in our supposition that a school that endows the Ogden
Nash chair in poetry would be a little loose with the rules.
