Golf is ruined?
I for one, can't wait to get out there tomorrow
and work on my driving....
I also think there might be the odd kid who watched
the Masters today who might just fancy going
down the range next week and try this 'ruined'
game out for the first time.

That's what happens when RoboGolfer is raised from age 6-months with one goal in
mind.

I wonder what Earl Woods' other kids think of his fatherly abilities.

I wish someone would just chop off Tiger's arms.

Don't try and be funny, I am not Tiger's greatest fan but did you watch the
Masters?? It was extremely tight nearly ended in a three way play off.

True. When he is in a tournament, it is no longer a question of "if." The
question is now "when." I disagree with those who say that Tiger has added
excitement to golf. What's exciting about watching the final round on
Sunday when you know on Thursday who's going to win?

Don't you love how, after Woods wins on Sunday, everybody "knew he would win
on Thursday"?

I think we can blame Tiger for public courses being more crowded anyway.
Then again we can blame him for the boom in golf course construction, which
one day may leave a glut of courses. Of course then they'll go bankrupt or
sell the land to developers. The mind wanders.

Not true. This weekend could have gone many different ways but once again
Tiger did what needed to be done to win the tournament. How do you consider
the leader taking a 1 stroke lead to the 72nd tee not suspenseful? How
about if Duval had already made his putt on 18 - would that have been
suspenseful?

No suspense?

Bob May takes Tiger to the final hole of a playoff in the PGA Championship.
Then Duval has birdie opportunities to catch Tiger on 17 and 18. Tiger
needs par on 18 to win.

You don't call that suspense?

Then I don't call you very knowledgable about golf.

That's kinda the way I feel about watching the World Series. I mean, it's
gonna be the Yankees, so what's the point in watching?

But I've never much cared for baseball anyway. So I suspect the level of
interest comes from whether or not you have an appreciation for the game
itself.

Obviously, you don't for golf, and I don't for baseball.

You could treat 10,000 kids the same way and you'd get exactly zero
Tigers out of the lot. You can attribute Tiger's skill to "training"
but in reality being trained from age 6 months in golf won't do any
more for you than being trained from age 6 months in baseball or
hockey. It'll make you good, it'll help you be great, but it won't
make you Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods.

I suppose you weren't watching baseball between 1979-1995, were you?

I agree completely. The more you appreciate a sport, the more interesting
it becomes -- almost regardless of the outcome. Folks who think Tiger
had this tournament in the bag before the 72nd hole either don't understand
golf or are fooling themselves.

The only thing that might have given Woods' 1-stroke lead at the final

Tiger's tee shot hit the 18th fairway, they knew Tiger was gonna make
par at the least. But even Duval waiting by the scoring tent seemed
like a person who wasn't expecting to get in any more holes on the

The suspense is in how long we get to keep dreaming about being able

That's my point...Tiger does what needs to be done to win and everyone knows
this by now. That being the case, how can anyone think he might not win
whatever tournament he is in? They might as well cancel all the major PGA
tournaments for the next twenty-five years and just award them all to Tiger
right now. After this, he can tear up the Seniors Tour.

I used to appreciate golf and part of that appreciation came from the
suspense of not knowing the outcome in advance. However, it goes without
saying that Tiger can win any tournament he wants to, and he usually wants
to win. The rest of the golfers on tour are overshadowed by him.

Lack of suspense in sports doesn't always mean lack of drama. Secretariat in
the Belmont in '73 for the 1st triple crown in 25 years. Sure there was -zero-
suspense after the first 1/2 mile, but even now it chokes me up to see the
replay of the stretch call.
(BTW, that same year, also for the 1st time since '48, Tulane beat LSU. And
trust me, there was no pre-event suspense there; LSU was a big favorite.)

Not precisely true -- the owner and trainers for Secretariat, as well
as many others around the world, were afraid that Turcotte had taken
him out too fast and that he would wilt in the last third of the race
(which longer than the K.D. or Preakness). But amazingly, Secretariat
just kept going faster . . . and faster . . . and faster. Was it this
race where his final split was his fastest of the race? Unbeleivable.

Doug

"And they're off!.....Looks like the early lead goes to My Gallant, yes My
Gallant going for the lead with Twice a Prince on the outside. Secretariat away
very well has good position on the rail..and in fact is now going up with the
leaders. They're moving for the first turn. It is Secretariat, Sham on the
outside is also moving along strongly and now it's Sham, Sham and Secretariat
are right together into the first turn. My Gallant has third behind them,
then it's Twice a Prince and the trailer is Private Smiles as they go by the
turn.....Those two together, Sham on the outside, Sham getting a head in front
as they move around the turn with Secretariat second.. then there's a large
gap, make it eight lengths back to My Gallant in third and Twice a Prince
fourth..and Private Smiles is still the trailer....They're on the backstretch.
It's almost a match race now. Secretariat's on the inside by a head. Sham is
on the outside...They've opened ten lengths on My Gallant who is third by a
head with Twice a Prince fourth, then it's another eight lengths back to
Private Smiles who is trailing the field. They continue down the backstretch
and that's Secretariat now taking the lead. He's got it by about a length and
a half...Still Sham..Ten lengths back My Gallant, Twice a Prince...They're
moving on the turn now..For the turn it's Secretariat. He looks like he's
opening. The lead is increasing. Make it three, three and a half. He's moving
into the turn. Secretariat holding on to a large lead. Sham is second, and then
it's a long way back to My Gallant and Twice a Prince. They're on the turn and
Secretariat is blazing along..the first three-quarters of a mile in one oh
nine and four-fifths. Secretariat is widening now..He is moving like a
tremendous machine..Secretariat by twelve..Secretariat by fourteen lengths on
the turn. Sham is dropping back. It looks like they'll catch him today as My
Gallant and Twice a Prince are both coming up to him now. But Secretariat is
all alone. He's out there almost a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of
the horses. Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He's
into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by eighteen lengths and now
Twice a Prince has taken second and My Gallant has moved back to third.
They're in the stretch. Secretariat has opened a twenty-two length lead. He
is going to be..the Triple Crown winner. Here comes Secretariat to the
wire. An unbelievable, an amazing performance. He hits the finish..twenty-
five lengths in front. It's going to be Twice a Prince second, My Gallant
third, Private Smiles fourth, and Sham, who had it today, dropped back to
fifth. An amazing, unbelievable performance by this miracle horse......."

Under an easy hand ride - all the way. Turcotte looked back when he started
the stretch and was shocked to see no other horses!

He won by 25 lengths and set the Stakes record time which still stands -
hand ride
and no competition and he still ran that fast. One can only wonder what he
could have
run that day. Secretariat was obviously the "Athlete of the 20th Century".
