Though you've got to remember, this is 136 acres we're talking about.
This is big enough to stick DISNEYLAND in and still have room for
a hotel. I'm not sure of the exact acrage of the Hurricane Harbor at
SFMM, but its probably only about 15 - 20 acres now, after 2 phases of
expansion. The water park could still be built now, with the hotel and
other things later, having nothing to do with each other.
Just a thought.

"Welton seeking volunteers to review hotel-complex study"
By Scott Silvestri
Daily Herald Staff Writer
A consulting firm working with Six Flags Great America on
plans for a possible hotel and events center in Gurnee will publicly
unveil its study in September.
Gurnee Mayor Richard Welton said Tuesday that Chicago-based
Prism Development Company is well into its review of the facilities.
In November, the village gave the firm the go-ahead to conduct
a detailed study of the project.
Meanwhile, Welton has announced that he's looking for
volunteers to serve on a committee to review Prism's report.
Letters from interested residents may be sent to village hall
at 325 N. O'Plaine Road. The panel of 25 to 30 members will be named
at the Aug. 25 village board meeting, Welton said.
The committee will go through the study, make suggestions and
send it on to the plan commission, Welton said.
The commission will then make a recommendation to the village
board.
The study is most likely several months away from coming
before the board, the mayor said.
If a proposal were to win approval, the timing of any future
development is uncertain.
Last year, Prism and Six Flags Great America officials agreed
to work on the hotel facility concept and its possible location on a
Great America-owned 136-acre parcel just west of the theme park across
the Tri-State Tollway.
The proposed 100,000-square-foot multipurpose convention
center could support small-scale conventions and meetings, while still
providing areas for weddings receptions and other functions, according
to an initial market study previously done for the village.
In the study, traffic issues such as the possibility of
pursuing another tollway exit at Washington Street and local
transportation needs will be addressed.
In addition, Prism officials will look into the possibility of
a collegiate-sized arena that could house minor league basketball and
hockey teams. Such an arena also could be used for ice shows,
concerts, and circuses.
Welton cautioned that such a proposal for a massive project
does not mean development will occure right away. He said making such
an estimate would be premature.
"We're very early into this process", he said tuesday.
----------------------------------- End of article----------------
The interesting part of this article is that they note that "on a
Great America-owned 136-acre parcel just west of the theme park across
the Tri-State Tollway". This confirms that SFGAm does indeed own that
plot of land across I-94. It is also noteworthly that Mayor Welton
states that "We're very early into this process". So, I am guessing
that plans for this 136 acres are still up in the air. What I am
getting at was there was no mention of plans to build a water park on
this site, but I am guessing that plans for it are not yet out of the
question. We'll just have to wait and see what happends. If I notice
any other articles about this issue, I'll post them here for everyone
to read.

You also have to remember the the largest water park in North America
(Noah's Ark in Wisconsin Dells) is only 65 acres, including guest
parking, and they claim they have 37 slides and other water activities.

65 acres is the largest? Hmmm...I've been to some big ones and they
seems to be at least this size. Anyone know what the acreage of
RAGING WATERS in San Dimas or WET N WILD in ORLANDO are? How about
Adventure Island in Tampa? Though the new WET N WILD opening in San
Diego in 1998 will be 47 acres to start with, with another 30-40 acres
set aside for future expansion.
