Bon jour amici miei,

I have a complete database already setup in the latest version of
VROOTS. Then I upgraded to "XP" a few months ago. At that point VROOTS
no longer works. I get a "Failure divided by zero" message every time I
try and start it.

The database is still there and intact. How do Import it into Family
Tree Maker Version 10?

I really don't want to have to start from scratch and reinput all of
that data. I have a gargantuan family. I think there are two or three
entries total possible. So it would save many hours if I could just
import the file, or enable FTM to be able to access it somehow.

TIA

If you don't have a copy of the GEDCOM, you would first need to get a copy
of this. Do you have access to a computer that has the previous operating
system? If so genereate your GEDCOM and import it into FTM.

Is the GEDCOM file created automatically? Or is it a special format that
I have to go to and make it save that way?

Rather than spend a large amount of time re-entering your data, you could
get a copy of Ultimate
Family Tree version 3.0 and upgrade it to Version 3.1. This program was the
most recent version
of the successors to VROOTS. It ought to run under XP directly and allow you
to print out all your old reports, etc. This is a temporary measure because
work on UFT has been suspended. But it would allow you to see
EVERYTHING that you had ever input! You can probably find a copy of UFT
Version 3 on E-Bay for a few dollars.

A better alternative in the future will be to get The Master Genealogist
when the full Version 5 is available.
It will read both the VROOTS and UFT database and will preserve almost all
the data. The version of TMG
available now will read the VROOTS database and will let you output the
latest version of GEDCOM.
(see www.whollygenes.com)

When you consider the cost of either of these programs, it is a bargain
considering the time you will
have to spend re-entering data. Note even if you use Gedcom, if you have put
data in VROOTS special
fields, it will be lost and you would have to re-enter it.

Further information may be gained from the Arlington RUG (formerly the ROOTS
User GROUP) which
emphasizes the transition from ROOTS based products to TMG based products.

Is there no way to reverse your "upgrade"?

You will have to create it and save it that way. I'm not sure about
your particular program. But generally File->Export->Export GEDCOM
should be close to the menu path to create the GEDCOM.

I finally fixed this problem! I've been searching on the internet for
days and days and have finally found the fix to the divide by zero
error, which does not allow me to ignore, by the way. I'm running
Windows 2000 nt, and have the 2.8 fersion of UFT (Ultimate Family
Tree).

Anyway, get the patch26.exe files (NOT uft2fox.exe -- it is crap).
Get this file from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q240982

To use it, I'll quote someone else:

I made the mistake of thinking that if you double click on
the patch26 file after youve put it on your machine (see
earlier postings)then it would solve the problem. No.
this is how I solved my "divide by zero" error ... because I thought
other people were maybe making my mistake.

1) Put patc26 in with a file called fox2600.esl - mine went
in c:/uft
2) double click on another file in the same place - mine
called <foxrun>. It has a small icon picture that looks
as if you want to run in dos mode.
3) this gives you a black screen, like dos prompt, for you
to type in commands
4) type <cd c:\uft> I didnt need to do this as the machine
did it automatically. But you need to point at the
directory that contains Ultimate Family Tree
5) type these command one at a time pressing <enter> after
each one
attrib -r FOXW2600.ESL <enter>
patch26 FOXW2600.ESL <enter>
attrib +r FOXW2600.ESL <enter>

After typing the patch command I got a message to say that
the patch had run and hey presto I could use my ultimate
family tree program.

This explaination was found here:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/uft/messages/9010.html

Also see this (but you shouldn't need to):
http://genforum.genealogy.com/uft/messages/9015.html

Good luck!
