Anyone had any experience with either of these, or other recommendations in
the same price range?
TIA
I'm experienced with dozens of power amplifiers. As long as your device has a
low output impedance (all solid state do) and enough power to play loudly
enough without clipping extensively they will be perfectly transparent
sonically.
A few years ago I proctored a challenge test where an audio store owner in
Florida was unable to distinguish a pair of his $7k monoblocks from a 10-year
old Yamaha integrated amplifier when he was unable to know in advance which was
powering his Dunlavy loudspeakers. (A cloth was placed over the amplifer
terminals.)
My advice is unless there is some known operating problem with your present
amplification changing amplifiers is extremely unlikey to change the sound
coming from your subwoofer.
On the other hand, you could do a search on the web for amps intended to be
integrated into powered subs. I picked up such a unit for just over $100.00.
It delivers over 250 watts into 4 ohms and has level and crossover controls.
I run the sub output from my Denon 3802 into this sub amp I located on top
of my systems cabinet. The speaker wires run from there directly to my 12
inch Dahlquist sub. I later added an ICBM bass manager and now my SACD
player sounds better than ever.
Richard.
Thanks for the advice. I really wasn't intent on improving the sound--I was
shopping for another amp (even tho there is no pressing need for it) in case
the current one goes belly up. I figured I'd rather have one on hand than
shop hastily for a replacement.
