Wanted to know if anyone has experience with the BIC Techno 293 board. If
you do I was wondering what you thought of it. Maybe you might have some
suggestions for a novice like me.

I am 5' 10" 195Lbs with a couple of short New England summers worth of board
sailing experience. I sail in Plymouth/Duxbury MA harbor which is shallow
with rocks in some area's. I liked the Techno 293 because it has 2 small
fins rather than a single deep fin. Plus I am on a budget and I've seen the
Techno 293 on the net for $699 which seems fairly reasonable. But I don't
know what else might be out there.

Thanks,

I would recommend the the Tiga 293 instead, Single fins are far better.

The handling is better and you will learn faster. If two fins were better than
one, we would push the hell out of them since we are in the fin business,

Plus with twin fin your fin costs almost double since the stock fins are bad

The Bic Techno prograam is good, if Bic is your preference, just buy a single
fin one.

The lowest cost per hooked in minute is to get enough volume so you can hook in
your local sailing conditions.

I have a 2002, 283 (single fin). My guess is we're about at the same level.
I'm a little bigger (6'3" / 210) but can plane with the rest of 'em usually
with a little larger sail. I typically use a 48cm curtis weed fin riding
7.0 - 9.8 sails. I've had the board since november and have progressed a lot
on it.

I think the 283 will be plenty large enough for you - and will be a little
better than the 293 if the wind really picks up and you still want to get
out. Having only sailed on long boards and recently getting back into it, I
was a bit worried about going 'small'. In only a few months, I've realized
that the the 283 is a 'big' board, and i'm glad I took the shop's advice and
got that one rather than the 293 w/ dbl fins.

I agree with Bill. Last season I ended up buying a new Tiga FreeX 291 at a
very reasonable price. I intended to use it only on very light days out on
Long Island or New Jersey, but I ended up loving the board and using it with
most of my quiver of sails from 9.0 down to 5.6 most of the days. At first I
thought that a 205L board would be way too big for anything under 7.5, but
that board is amazing and when powered up feels easier to handle than some
160L boards that I've sailed in the past. It's easy to handle, super stable,
planes very early and it is just fun to ride in most conditions that my
local spots offer. I do get weird looks though .... riding a 205L board on
6.0 days, but I think they get the point by the third time I jibe around
them while they are trying to waterstart after falling again.
Make no mistake, you'll not be the fastest cat around, but if you handle the
board properly it is plenty fast and who cares about that anyway when you
are having so much fun. And remember all those people that will tell you
that it is too big, have not sailed THAT board, so do yourself a favor and
try it before you make a decision.
The BIC Techno 293 is very similar but not the same (even the newer single
fin models). The Tiga is a little lighter and seems more durable with the
deck carpet and the seamless mold.

Good luck,

Alek
