With all the nostalgia floating around this newsgroup lately I thought
it might bring back a few memories for the serious old boys amongst you
that can remember this terminology. What was/is IDDY UMPTY.
Bet Walt knows this one !

When I was in the Home Guard, We were taught "flag morse"
This was made by waving a flag over the head, a dot being from the start
position over the left shoulder to a corresponding position over the
right shoulder and return, the movement being made in a figure 8 motion,
so that the flag did not snarl up.
The dash was the same thing but over a longer movement.
When learning, the word iddy represented the movement for a dot and
umpty that for a dash.
hence iddy iddy iddyt umpty would represent letter V

Hope that this is clear, if not let me know.

This system sounds to me like a mixture of Ken Dodd's "DIDDY MEN"

Not quite right Dez but I wouldn't doubt others might have adopted an
alternative to the TRUE meaning and source of IDDY-UMPTY.
During the period when the Royal (Corps of) Signals used Morse Sounders
it was said by the OKLs & OWKs of the Signal Corp that the double click
of the morse sounder sounded more like IDDY for a di & UMPTY for a dah.
This terminology stuck and it became common usage to refer to Morse via
Sounders as IDDY-UMPTY.
Any old Signallers around should be able to confirm this.
I'm only a sprog so my turns on the coil don't go back that far Hi.
But! I do remember my chief telling me about sounders when I was an RO1
at Mercury.

Pfft! Absolutely not Steve! Got my licence in 1968!

And there is nothing written in with a CRAYON on it either! :-)

As far as three "Tenors" go - well, I know that they make one and six!

Backgammon's OK as long as you don't lose!

Now, does all of this have ANYTHING to do with amateur radio or where were
we going with it?!! - Bry, G3XLQ / WB4FPH / AF4K

There is a difference Steve. Flag Morse uses only two/three flag
positions, Semaphore uses many.

Hi all, I learned the code when I was about 12 (mid 1930's) when heavy
brass "straight" keys were the order of the day.
It was explained to me then, that the "iddy" was produced when sending
a dot and the "umpty" when a dash was sent.
These were supposed to represent the sound caused by the front and rear
contacts of those heavy keys. Try it you _might_ like it <vbg>!
Cheers, Ken GM2CWL.
