I was just about to buy a Smart Disk external USB Floppy drive for my
Powerbook G4 when I noted on Smart Disk's tech support page that slow
operation with OS X is a known problem. Is this generally true for all
USB floppy drives? If not, can someone recommend one they have found to
work well with a Powerbook running OS X?

We've been running an Imation LS-120
Superdrive under 10.1.5 with no problems.
I haven't yet tried it with 10.2

(Restriction: The LS-120 is only documented to
work with 1.44MB floppies, not the older 800KB
and certainly not the oldest 400KB floppies. It
probably works with LS-120 120 MB floppies
too, but we almost never see those. :-) )

I just received my SmartDisk external floppy today from Other World
Computing ($20! Such a deal I bought two). This was the first I had
heard of problems in OSX. One of the drives is for a computer that will
run exclusively 10.2, so I wanted to see if the report is true. Here
are my results:

OS 9.2
Mount floppy-0'8"
Copy 720 kb to HD-0'33"

OS 10.2
Mount floppy-1'02"
Copy 720 kb to HD-5'33"

Conclusion: Slow operation is indeed a problem.

Hopefully a fix will come. But I'm not counting on it since I think
they are discontinued.
