Okay, I give up! I can not figure out how this thing transforms! I've
always admired the slick-looking fighter mode (the Lockheed was one of
my grandfather's favorite planes), but after examing pctures of it's
three modes for half an hour, I'm stumped.

My main area of consternation are it's legs. The arms and legs seem to
fold together to form the fighter's thrusters. Besides the fit being a
little *too* tight, the thrusters are just too far from the main
fuselage to form the hip joints I see in battloid mode. The way I see
it, in order to get the fighter mode, the upper legs would shift out and
up, and the knee would bend at a perpendicular angle from the upper leg.
But looking at the front view of the fighter mode, the wing space
between the fuselage and the thruster is very flat, and the battloid's
upper legs are very not flat.

Then there's the fuselage. At first I thought the cockpit just folded up
into the torso, similar to the VF-19. Then I noticed what appeared to be
a nosecone peeking out from the battloid's hip joint. What gives!? How
did it get there? The "stump" left behind would appear to be the area
behind the cockpit, but I don't understand how the cockpit and nosecone
end up tucked behind and under the fuselage. Also, does that stump serve
a purpose, like a missle bay or a mounted gun? Can it mount FAST packs?

Am I missing something very obvious? Does anybody have the same problems
"grasping" the transformation?

I would also like to know when the VF-4 appeared in Macross continuity,
so I can see it for myself. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

--Mike

Windjammer...you're expertise please. If not, get the SHE kit of it and see for
youself. The one's that's always stumped me was the YF-21.

I'm still trying to grasp the idea of the nosecone of the YF-19 folding into
the chest...even after watching the DVDs in slow motion again...and
again...and again...

WINDJAMMER! There is CONFUSION in the air!!! Descend from the heavens and
jam it with your wind!!!

(*A Zentraedi chant starts. The projectors warm up. Windjammer slowly
fades in...)

You can see the VF-4 (fighter mode only) in the 30 minute video
Flashback: 2012.

Well..I have the SHE kit of the YF-19, here goes. There's a panel behind the
auxiliary intakes that raises, this is where the shoulders are attached. and
where the head is attached also (you can see the panel raised up he it is in
GERWALK). The front of the fuselage jointed at the nose cone right in front of
the cockpit. The Cockpit is nestled vertically right next to the backpack. When
all is said and done, the nose cone is tucked under the aforementioned panel.
The best way to think about it when you are looking at the front YF-19 in
Battroid mode, the middle torso is actually the underneath of the cockpit,
where the landing gear would be.

Two words concerning the VF-4. UG-LY! (Ok, one word) Oh yeah, I wish that one
that looks like the A-6 would GO AWAY. That thing is ugly. Cool Fighter, bad
battroid. Ewwwww.......

The VF-4 can also be seen in Perfect Memory, in the section that explains the
intervening 2 years between Space War One and the end of the story.

The explanation of the VF-4's transformation sequence is detailed in Mediax
Mook 53 (Macross Digital Mission VF-X). I'll try and get some scans up on
NMMA soon.

The VF-4 Lightning III was designed as a heavy space fighter and has never
been seen mounting FAST Packs. It uses numberous large vernier thrusters
that are strategically placed for optimum manuvering in space. Armament
includes: 12 semi-recessed long range missile (6 of which are mounted under
wing [area] hardpoints) and two large beam cannons.

The VF-4 has appeared in Macross Flashback 2012, [Macross: 2036, ] [Macross:
Enteral Love, ] Macross Digital Mission VF-X, and Macross 7 Trash.
