I read one message on here earlier from a bass player, but what about
the rest of you. I've been playing bass for a few years, and have found
that really studying Paul's style has been a tremendous boost, even
when not playing Beatles songs. Just something about getting a feel for
a song and "grooving" was something he excelled at in the early days.
One thing that has caught my ear recently is in AHDN around the second verse,
Paul just pulses a few off beat "G" notes (I think it's G) between phrases
and it just is fantastic!
There are numerous other examples I can think of, but what about the rest of
you? Bassists and non-bassists, what are your fave Bass passages (solo
careers too)?

And recently (check out GOOMW). When I'm stressed about exams, or
whatever, playing along with "Another Day" always mellows me out and
lightens me up a bit. The bass moves that whole song along. There's
some good funk on "Pipes of Peace," IMHO. The best stuff to listen
to for his bass playing is always the live stuff, though... he is
someone to learn a lot from, bass-playing, and otherwise. I remember
hearing "Penny Lane" for the first time when I was three -- that's my
earliest memory dealing with music, in fact -- and Paul's bass-playing
has had me ever since! The Russian album was the first entire CD I
ever learned to play. Fabulous.

Didn't John call Paul the greatest rock bassist ever, at some point?
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will! :)

the irony is that paul doesn't even play the bass parts on these songs.
for the former, it's not even a bass - it's a distorted electric. i
think george plays it. for "helter skelter," john plays the bass.

john also played bass on "let it be" and "the long and winding road."
his "let it be" bass line was later replaced by paul, and on "the long
and winding road," it's buried under the orchestra.

I was aware that the bass on Helter Skelter was played by John;
it's still one of my favourite bass parts. On You Never Give Me
Your Money, however, you are mistaken. The bass is one of the most
prominent parts of the song, played by Paul. It was overdubbed
on July 11, 1969. (See p.325 of the Complete Beatles Chronicle)

I like the bass on Nowhere Man, And Your Bird Can Sing, Something (was
it Paul ?) and others...(no need to mention).
For his solo, I think I can say my fave is Silly Love Songs, but it's
obvious that he didn't play bass on that song for Give My Regards To
Broad Street album.

Taxman either (clarify, please )

I like 'I Saw Her Standing There'. It's an early example, but listen
to it, it's really good, and think that Paul played that in concert, and
sang at the same time. Not bad.

john plays bass on "helter skelter," put paul plays on the other two
(along with the lead on "taxman," as has been discussed here often).

i stand corrected about my earlier comment about his not playing on
"you never give me my money." guess that's what i get for only half-
remembering what i read. ;) i think i might have gotten that confused
with "two of us," which features george playing a bass-like electric
guitar lead.

that's just for the promo film (filmed, i think, for the david frost
show). on the actual recording, paul plays both the piano and bass,
john plays acoustic guitar, and george just sings. originally, george
wanted to do an "answering" guitar line to paul's lead vocal, but paul
apparently nixed the idea, leaving george with no instrumental part in
the final song.

Not specifically for the David Frost show, but that is where the clip ended
up premiering. ("and now...the world's greatest tea room orchestra,
The Beatles") I certainly *hope* no one thought the boys were actually
playing through that clip :-) Ringo would've had quite a hard time
of it with that nice young lady hanging all over him.

Here are a couple that come to mind as favorite bass lines:

1. All My Loving
2. I've Got a Feeling
3. Silly Love Songs
4. A Little Help From My Friends
5. You Never Give Me Your Money
6. I Saw Her Standing There
7. You Wont See Me
8. Rain
9. Heart of the Country
10. Everybodys Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey

Someone mentioned about "i hope nobody thought they were actually playing"
in the Hey Jude promo. While they weren't playing, the vocals were live,
and some pre-taped vocals were used . You can tell when Paul's

"live vocal" is double-tracked, and when the "na-na-nas" get out-of-sync
at the end and the clip is cut off.

done; I'll go further, probably the most inventive pop bass line ever!.

Musician's union rules in England at the time. Lip Synching was
technically illegal. To get around this, the Beatles would tape
either an entire alternate vocal (eg: the "Revolution" promo), or
just bits and pieces to make it sound significantly different.

In no case were they either singing or playing "live" (as in performing
*anything* while surrounded by a studio full of carefully chosen fans)
though.

IMO, one of the most melodic bass line is in Something. Paul goes way beyond
using the bass to accentuate the chords. He plays a melody within the melody
(lsiten to the bass between the verses "...the way she moves" and "attracts me
like..."), he does with the bass what John or George could have done with the
guitar. Just beautiful! Very creative.

Someone mentioned here that the Beatles never sang anything during:
the Hey Jude promo clip!?? Have you seen and listened to the clip??:
Paul's vocal is definitely live (and accompanied by his pre-taped:
vocal on some lines), and John's and George's vocals are live too!!:
Just listen to their singing watch Paul's screaming near the end:
of it - it is not lip-synched!!:

Listen sometime on a GOOD stereo system to the opening bass line
in "Baby You're a Rich Man" (and NOT on the Crapitol album where
it's muddy and indistinct... listen to it from the CD or from that
German pressing of Magical Mystery Tour on the label I can't remember
right now because all my vinyl is in boxes in the closet). If your
own system isn't up to the task, take the CD to a good stereo
dealer and tell them you want to audition some speakers and
crank up this track on a bitchen system with subwoofers :)

McCartney gets down.. down... DOWN there into the lower registers
unlike any other Beatles' recording I can think of. Pipe organ low.
It's scary.
Of course the 60s/70s saw a lot of other very creative electric
bass players and the two that spring immediately to my mind are
Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead (try "St. Stephen" especially
the extended version on the double-LP "Live Dead") and Jack
Cassidy of Hot Tuna. Both of these guys often played bass as a
lead instrument, to awesome results.

Oh, I've definitely got to agree here. This was the first Paul bass
line I ever learned to play (on my six-string acoustic, no less). A
few years ago someone wrote a really creative post where they said
something like if the planet were going to be destroyed and they (the
poster) had to choose who was going to be on the spaceship to leave
with the remaining survivors, Paul would get the seat slated for the
best rock artist, based on that funky little bass line, if nothing
else. (I think they offered to stick Linda in there with him, for
her cooking. :)

It's nice to see a series of posts not slamming Macca for some reason!
