Every time I run win update for WinMe and select ie 6 svc. pack 1,
Ie6setup.exe downloads, gets to the "Installing" phase, gets to about
74% and then stops saying some elements weren't installed. The
elements listed are all of the them. I've been using winupdate for
ages without problems. Any suggestions?

>I've starting filing complaints with US Dept of Justice
and Federal Trade Commission ! I'm fedup with Al-Qiuda
Osama B. Gates and all the HELL his ie 6.0 and Windows
DEFECTS are causing me. I have almost same problem with ie
6.0 SP1. It wants to install ie 6.0 again ! Microsoft
refuses to help me unless i pay $35. That's another reason
i filed more complaints with US Dept of Justice. Everybody
should file complaints with US Dept of justice and FTC
against Billy Bully Gates and his defective software !
I'll probably uninstall ie 6.0. Sorry i can't help more.
Good Luck.

Can't help with the problem but the IE6 SP1 CD is orderable at the IE web
site.

Maybe it's good that the program did not install. After
reading a few pages from this newsgroups, I think
installing IE6 SP1 is a bad idea. It has made some systems
inoperable.

The fix listed in this group works-- unhide \Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Uninstall Information; then move all of the files in
\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information to a new
directory. Then run ie6setup.exe. Then, after the reboot that
completes the install, move the files back to \Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Uninstall Information

Thanks. It does work.

But then, after the installation, the uninstall
information folder got populated with a number of files,
some have the same names as the old ones (that are in the
folder that you moved the file to before running
ie6setup.exe).

Do we replace the old ones with the new ones or what?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have the VERY same problem. ALSO on a Win ME system.
It starts to run the install, gets to about 4% then jumps
to like 74% (or so) and ends up with the "Some components
were not installed" error message. When I reboot and
attempt to resume, the same thing keeps happening.
Finally I have to hit CANCEL to abort the installation
program.

I have gone thru the MS Knowledgebase and have found
things to try, but nothing has helped. I have tried this
in Safe Mode also to no avail.

I amthinking there is a bug with WinME and the install
program/process.

I just moved all the olds one back. Worst that happens if I want to
uninstal back to 6.0 and the Windows reversion from the control
panel - Add/Remove PRograms doesn't work right, then I reboot and let
Goback take me back to days and disk of 6.0 without SP1.

It seemed to me that just after 74%, Win was installing the browser
enhancements package. So I am guessing that a file in the uninstall
info directory regarding that part of the package is the culprit.

I also suspect that MS will correct this install bug eventually and
then, if one is nervous, one can reinstall or do a repair installation
of 6.0 SP1.

Or maybe not. Don't mean to sound frivilous but I expect most
software to have bugs. I don't think that's a good thing but I think
it's a fact of life. Scott's law: Computers and software systems are
so complicated now that No One knows how they work. It's gets to be
more and more like the movie Brazil. If you expect them to work all
the time, you'll never be happy again.

regards,
Scott H.

Try the fix listed in this thread. This particular install problem
(the 74% problem) seems to have a workaround with the "fix." It's
really more like a wad of duct tape but that what it takes to use
software these days -- especially with so many updates and upgrades --
before evrything is "fixed" in one version, a new one is out with a
whole new set of oversights and mistakes.

Good luck,
