Hi,
I recently bought a Hitachi Deskstar drive (HDS722516VLAT80) onto which I was
hoping to transfer my existing set up (since my current IBM drive has been
making some funny noises and 'lost' a partition table last year).
However, I am unable to partition this drive. I get a lot of errors like:
ad3: WARNING - READ_DMA UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=0
ad3: WARNING - READ_DMA UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=0
ad3: FAILURE - READ_DMA status=51<READY,DSC,ERROR> error=84<ICRC,ABORTED>
LBA=0
Every time I try to do anything with the drive. Fdisk whines as follows:
fdisk: can't read fdisk partition table
fdisk: /boot/mbr: length must be a multiple of sector size

The BIOS on this board does not supports 48 bit addressing and so reports the
drive as 137GB. Additionally, the mobo only supports UDMA 33.
My question is whether this might be OS related or if I have a broken drive.

Another data point; Hitachi's drive fitness test thinks the disk is OK.
I have attached a verbose dmesg, in case that provides any more information,
although I am coming to the conclusion this motherboard is just dodgy.

Hi,
I noticed you are using Hitachi drives. Our experience has shown that
Hitachi has a horrendous advanced replacement warranty. Avoid them if
you can.
