Sup,

I'm recieving an error message when trying to play
certain files. The error message appears in a pop-up
window and says the following:

"The input media format is invalid."

After this, it changes the icon of the file on the
playlist to a brown '!' and proceeds to the next file on
the list. The file plays in other MP3 players
(specifically - QCD [www.quinnware.com], Sonique 2
[www.sonique.com], and even Windows Media Player
6.4.09.1125) please lemme know if this is WMP9's problem,
or if it's something specific to certain files I have.

I would have sent the specific file, however IE gave me a
security error about a script taking too long to
execute. If needed, I can e-mail the file to one of your
testers at MS, just let me know.

Thanks,

BS

I've been getting the same message. In Media Player 9
Beta it would play the file, but the sound would be
corrupted. In the Release Candidate, it just skips the
file and puts a exclamation point next to it. There are a
lot of files that do this, which all play fine in Winamp,
RealPlayer, etc...

Hi,

What are the file formats you're trying to play?
It looks to me that you need to install a third-party codec/filter in order
to play your files.
Can you tell me what the error message is when you click on the exclamation
point that marks the files with error?

I am having the same exact problem. My entire media collection was
encoded using LAME 3.92 using --alt-preset-extreme.

Most of my files play just fine, but since I installed RC1, some of
them won't play at all (although they play fine in winamp3).

They won't even show up in the media library anymore!

It's not a lack of decoder problem, b/c most of my music plays just
fine, and like i said, they were all encoded the same way and they ALL
worked under the previous beta.

After some investigation, it seems the files that won't play for me
are the ones that have padded ID3V2 tags. It's a perfectly valid
header, but WMP9 RC1 chokes on it.

"Padded"? I know WMP rejects compressed ID3 headers...

Actually, it seems the files that won't play have very long ID3V2 tags
(30k). I thought these were padded to that size, but they in fact
contain cover art directly within the ID3V2 tag. I only did this on a
handful of MP3s (using "Media Jukebox") and those are the ones that
won't play anymore (even though they are completely legitimate files -
the tags look long, but perfectly valid). Remember, these files play
absolutely fine in every other player i've tried and worked fine prior
to RC1 in WMP.

Any pointers to an 'afflicted' file?

Right, but there's lots of muck in ID3 land, and WMP has to make sense of
that mess the best it can.

Huh. Doesn't work for me. I found in the past that files that MusicMatch
Jukebox inserted album art into work, but who knows what each app is doing
to the files.

What exact application are you using to do this?

Are you saying that you can't get this file to work in WinAmp 2/3 or
any other player besides WMP?
As I said earlier... I used "Media Jukebox" to insert the album art.

... :) Right, but there's multiple versions of Media Jukebox, so if you can
confirm what vendor it's from and what version you're using, that'd be
helpful.

It was Media Jukebox 8, by J. River.

Zach,
MJ is only available from our website. No other vendors sell it.

Version 8 is on our downloads page. Version 9 is available in the
first message of the first thread on the V9 beta board here:

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta

Please let us know if you'd like help tracking this down. It
definitely could be our problem. We added code recently in V9 for
compatibility with MusicMatch. It could have broken something.

As you implied above, the ID3 standard is a challenge.

Heh - indeed.

I wanted to be sure it was *your* Media Jukebox as opposed to something
else... "Media Jukebox" and "Media Player" are popular names for
applications, so it's always good to pin people down before digging into
something. But it sounds like he was using v8, so it shouldn't be any new
code for v9. I'll look into as time avails itself...

I've verified that if you take a working MP3 file, open it in Media Jukebox
8.0 and insert album art into the file, that MP3 file will no longer work.
The file will generate error 0xc00d0bb8 in the player.

Clearing the ID3v2 data in any tag editor will result in the file being
playable again.

I don't think this will change for this release, but I'll talk with people
about this, even if it's just making the help better. :\

Thanks for verifying it. Like I said... in all prior versions of WMP it
would play the file.
