While the piece was funny, and we did see the Green Riders with a full
crowd on "national" television...

Dave did not say "of the CFL" or did he say "vesus the San Antonio
Texans" either of those would have given a nice media boost...oh well.

Hey, for those of us outside North America, could someone *please* tell me
what all this stuff about Dave, the Riders and some guy named Assman is all
about? Thanks!

Our apologies....sometimes we're a little North-American centralist here.

David Letterman is a Late-Night TV host following in the footsteps of
Johnny Carson (even to the point of having animals piddle on him.)

Occasionally he does a 'funny name' skit with information viewers have
mailed in concerning people with 'funny names'. This last segment had
a Dick Assman (pronounced as three words) from Regina, Saskatchewan for
their fleeting moment of fame.

Dick Assman was getting a lot of publicity in Regina and so the Riders
wanted to capitalise a little on it and hopefully get some positive
international attention. They made Dick an honourary something or another
and had him toss the coin at the Texans-Riders game. Dick ended up saying
the cheerleaders that escorted him were the best part of it. :)

Dave showed clips of Dick at work at the gas station....Dick walking on
Taylor field flanked by cheerleaders and flipping the coin....and a lot
of straight-faced mentioning of 'Ass-man' and 'Regina'.

That's about it.

In a nutshell, about two weeks ago, on the Late Show with David
Letterman, Dave was doing a "Stupid Ads" piece and he held up a
PetroCanada newspaper advertisement in which there was a picture of a
gentleman whose was identified as Dick Assman. Assman is a 61
year-old Regina gas station attendant. Everyone got a big
kick out of the name. His guests that night all made references to Mr.
Assman (among them Brooke Shields and Tony Orlando, who even ad-libbed
Assman's name into his song.) The rest of the week was known as
"Assmania". Letterman called Assman up at his Regina home a few times that
week and vowed to make Assman the number one tourist attraction in Canada
(well, he isn't, yet, but he is quite an attraction in Regina). The
following Monday, Letterman ran a "Dick Assman Update" in which he
announced all of Dick Assman's future appearances (Dick Assman horse race
night, opening of Buffalo Days - the Regina fair, etc.) He also ran a
videotape of Dick Assman in Regina. Among the highlights were Dick
Assman in action pumping gas, appearing on a local weather forecast,
and performing the coin toss at the Roughrider/San Antonio football game
(Letterman was invited to the game by the Roughriders, but graciously
declined because of "scheduling conflicts").

Hope this helps explain "Assmania".
