I was monitoring several Palm newsgroups for some 5 or 6 weeks now, watching
problems about the 5 way button, especially the problematic or random
responsive down click.

I am very much puzzled by the fact that just now there are no more
reports/complaints about this flaw and even no other notice about the
solution posted on a Chinese web page (internal mechanism somewhat
misaligned or bad designed, possible manual adjustment by unfastening the
screws, pushing on the top while fastening again, etc...)

May I understand that the first waves of misaligned Tungsten E have all been
sold out and returned back to the stores, OR custom repaired?
Did anybody return back his Tungsten E recently?
Did anybody had problem with the Tungsten E Multilingual in Canada?
http://canadastore.palmone.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1395128&clickid=feat_prod_title

In other words, is the green light now ON to buy safely the Tungsten E, if I
agree not to carry it among sandpaper sheets?

Every TE I tried (in various stores in Phoenix) all had a navigator 'down'
button that was hard to push. And my own is the same. Apparently a widespread
problem.

I kind of wondered this also. Have the switches on later runs of TE's been
fixed? Also I wonder if anything has been done about the abrasive flip cover
yet, and if so what the fix is?

It wasn't a deal breaker for me, I kept mine. And even if Palm offered a fix, I
sure wouldn't send it in for a replacement, only to get a refurb back that was
worse...

I have bought a Tungsten E at the beginning of october here in Germany. I
dont have the problem you described but - to be honest - I don't use the 5
way navigator anyway. Maybe that's the reason why nobody is complaining.
It's my first handheld and my problem is that I cannot manage to hotsync it
on Linux though all experts tell me it should work. As far as I see not
with the Tungsten E - but nobody else is complaining.

Let me make it clear that Tungsten E STILL HAS TONS OF PROBLEMS. And
yeah, I've bought and returned 2 Tungsten E's. I went to several
stores, and tested out several TE's, and *most* of them had faulty
down buttons. Some actually have perfectly working buttons.....I'd say
the chance of getting a perfect TE is 20-30%. If you want to buy one,
make sure the place you buy it from has a good return/exchange policy.

My first TE's problem - faulty down button. Exchanged it for...
My second TE - Perfectly working buttons, pressing the down button was
as easy as pressing up. However, the screen was noticeably
dimmer....along the lines of the Sony Clie TJ35. Returned. Refuse to
buy another TE until Palm corrects ALL of TE's problems, including the
scratching problem. It is USD $200, not something that costs USD $50,
so I demand perfection for all that money.

If you go into a store, you can press on the TE outside of the bubble
packaging, and you can tell if the TE you're getting will have a
button problem or not. You should do this to know if you have a bad
button or something. And about dim screens, well there is nothing you
can do until you charge up the thing to know that you have a bad TE
screen, unfortunately

Thanks, I had this idea, too : testing the down button (and comparing with
the "up" side) through the bubble packaging.
At this time, my heart balances between the E because of its very good
software package and *enhanced calendar* with colored appointments, usefull
for my teaching week... and some other Cliés like TG50 (have to test the
keyboard to see if it is worth the additional height!) or even the TJ 35,
which both seem to be very well made. But they have less RAM.

Thanks for your feedback!

Mike from Canada
