Anybody know where this is documented well?
As far as I understand it gives sharepoint the chance to create [external]
users in ad in a specified OU. Is it sensible to be in the same domain as
other users? Also can existing ad users be loaded automatically into
sharepoint?
If we have hundreds of users in our ad and want to support maybe 100
external users from other organisations is this the way to do it
interactively (delegate to sharepoint site admins)? I don't like the 'can't
change mode' after install between pre-existing account mode and account
creation mode gotcha.
Thanks
David

Portal server does not support this mode, only the Windows SharePoint
Services product supports method.

if you can do a 1-1 nat through your firewall, and allow users to see your server,
you can set up local machine accounts and make the default domain be your local machine account name. You can add users using \\server_name\accountname, make sure you configure seperate urls for internal and external or the links won't work for external users and vice versa.

Dear David,

Thanks for posting here.

You can create the SPS user accounts both in AD and in the local host.
If you need to allow the non-AD users to access the SPS and manager their
information, you can create the user accounts on the SPS server locally.
The local accounts can use the same alias as the AD account. When the users
log on to the SPS, he will get an authentication box and need to enter the
username as <Domain>\username.
We recommend you use AD account with the SPS v2 due to the security issue.
If the remote users are also in an AD, you can configure the trust
relationship between the two domains. Then you can delegate some permission
to the remote domain users.

I hope the information helps.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jorge Fei

There could be no document to describe this. You can simply create local
accounts for Sharepoint usage.
You can visit the following link for Sharepoint technical resource:
