wtf do I filter these idiots out? add them one by one to a killfile?

That was the only solution that came to mind, because half the topics in
this newsgroup seem to be from some completely insane person ranting about
battle cruiser, and they all have wildly varying topics, preventing
filtering them out that way :/

trying to decide if I should check this game out, looks to cover a huge
spectrum of game types, with a correspondingly huge amount of depth.
unfortunately, trying to get any interesting or factual information from
what would logically be the proper newsgroup seems to be the incorrect path
to take ;)

By all means, check the game out. Just don't say we didn't warn you... :)

Why don't you try the BC3000 forums? You obviously already have
preconceptions about *this* forum*.

Jesus christ. Apparently well founded preconceptions. I thought it was a
*joke* about rabid insane detractors.

Anyway, you've given me a good way to figure out who to killfile :D Thanks.

I plonked a couple of participants, but the best way
I found was to filter any message with
BCM
BC3K
BattleCruiser
Battle Cruiser
Derek Smart
in the subject.

But then I discovered I missed the cat fights so I let
them back in. It hasn't affected my sanity at all. Oh no.
We are all quite sane. Yes we are. Yessss.

The trouble is that Derek Smart and BC3k come with
a *LOT* of history. As we all know history is written
by the victor, and there hasn't been a conclusive
victor, so there are several versions of the history.

BC3K and BCM have an enormously wide scope. I haven't played
them so I can't tell you whether they succeed in this difficult
task.

You could try downloading the demos and the FAQs.

When BCM does appear in the shops there might be a
rational discussion of its merits here, but realistically
it is much more likely to degenerate into more mud wrestling.

If you want to discuss BC3K, your best bet is probably Derek
Smart's own forum, but I would advise you to lurk for a bit
there to get to learn the forum's posting conventions.

I'd do that, but that'd sort of defeat the point of trying to find actual
bcm conversation :/ Though nuking DS is a good idea.

That place is so far beyond scary it boggles the mind. I checked it, some
guy posted about how a friend said he had the warez version, and 'Supreme
Commander' (wtf?), threatened to ban him if he didn't recieve an email
'explaining himself'. Insanity personified.

I could give a shit about the sanity of the dev though, just gimme the game
if it's good ;) (Deus Ex/Anachronox came out of Ion Storm after all :D)

AFAIK, comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim was originally set up to divert the
flamewar Mr.Smart had perpetuated off comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic.

Therefore, flames are technically on-topic.

Here's what I recommend:

1.) First, it is essential to read a stomach-full of its developer's hype,
up until the point you feel worked up about it, or nauseus. This is
necessary to establish the proper perspective.

This can be accomplished by doing a google search using keywords
"BCM" and dsm...@pobox.com, and especially looking through the
official site, 3000ad.com.

2.) Download the patched version of BCK, and the BCM demo. "Play" both
"games" as extensively as possible, or until your attention wains.

3.) Come back and post your thoughts. Good luck commander.

Idiot.

I believe this to be true. During the on-line discussion before the vote it was
specifically discussed. However, I doubt that the charter ended up saying that.
:-)

Mr. Smart himself resisted the move to space-sim. I think he liked the bigger
audience in strategic. After many flames he finally relented and the flame war
has been centered in space-sim ever since.

Well to tell the truth since Mr. Smart's number one lacky, Dan Brooks, cut back
on the supporting posts here Derek Smart hasn't posted as much and has been
flaming over on Planetcrap, evilAvatar, and VoodooExtreme more.

You're glad you don't have to hear contrary opinions?

That's remarkably insular. I infer from that that you're insecure
about your beliefs, and don't have the guts to hear the truth from the
people who have it.

Critical/analytical thinking is a marvellous thing - you should apply
it to the endless train of half-truths and misrepresentations peddled
by the detractors.

Blakemore, you are a typical detractor. You are weakminded, and
desperately want to be one of the 'in-crowd'. On this group, you do
that by trying to attack Derek Smart, even though you have no real
credentials - you're just a hanger-on pretending he's one of the boys.
On RGMW, you did it by helping hound Erik Setzer off the group.
Don't you ever get tired of harassing innocent people just because
you're socially inadequate?

show that. Care to quote? I'll happily butt heads with anyone being an
arsehole.

I suggest you check your facts and do a bit more research before mentioning
that idiot again. For everyone else's record, Setzer is RGMW's very own
Derek Smart, except with fewer credentials (if that's possible :) )

Of course he is socially inadequate. I can even give you evidence to prove it,
since you forgot to include it in your post.

(muahaha!! AG must die!!!)

I wasn't insulting you. I was being honest. "rreved" is known to me

shows that Mr Bear was misquoted by Bill Huffman - who's the liar now?

Nonsense. You behave in the way the group approves of - you just see
senior people in newsgroups and want to be part of their groups.
Remember how, in high school, there were some weeds who always hung
around and imitated the big kids? They thought they were cool but
everyone, including the people they were trying to suck up to, was
laughing at them behind their back. That's you.

A quick test, just to find out whther or not you're talking out of your
arse.
On board which vessel did Erik's father serve? At what rank did he leave
the service? And under what discharge code did he leave?

Also...have you heard of a retired ex-Seal captain by the name of Larry
Bailey? (He's quite famous in the states) Perhaps a US Navy Chief at the
Navy's PR offices by the name of Todd Willebrand? If you've bothered to do
your research, you'll know why I'm asking... :)

Has it occured to you that they're just stories? Has he told you the one

Wrong. RE-R4, which means a dishonourable discharge. Ask him to show you
his DD-214. It's all there. Hell, look on the "Wall of Shame". He's on

So he wants people to think. Yet no records of his BUD/S training exist.
Ask him for his training class number. He'll tell you it's "top secret",
but if you ask Larry or Todd, you'll find out just how full of BS Tom is is.
Tom will *also* claim he was a SEAL team sniper for Team six. Now, all the
sources, *including the CO of Team six*, will tell you that the SEALS didn't
use snipers during VN.

These two people are the people to contact if you want to know if he's a

You are a proven liar and fraud. I have not misquoted Dr. Bear. Perhaps you saw
a post where Delightfully Dense Dan couldn't believe that Dr. John Bear had
agreed to be an expert witness against Derek Smart should he actually file a

Blakemore, I'm warning you. You can't go around attacking the honesty
of people who were wounded in action. Tom is a far better man than
you will ever be. Insulting a combat veteran who was wounded
defending the freedoms that we all take for granted is beneath even
you. Such an action is indefensible, even by detractor standards.

As for "guts", do you have the guts to admit that you were wrong?
Just listen to Tom's voice as he describes it. You must know him
well, to have personal documentation relating to him- why don't you
ask him outright? And as for his records, they were lost in a fire.
How about you present proof that he wasn't in the SEALS? You made
these heinous allegations, why don't you back them up?

I think you lost all credibility when you claimed that a .50 cal round
hitting someone in the hand would remove part of the arm - it would
punch through and keep going, without very much of its energy being
lost. No-one with half a brain cell working could fail to understand
that. You're mistaken about something, but you use that
misapprehension to abuse a vet. That's proof that you're not just
contemptible, you're stupid too.

You don't think that after all these years of obssessive behaviour,
that Huffman can register a simple fact like 'my server's in
Australia, I couldn't possibly be in Florida.", do you?

Dan, I have no idea about the ins and outs of this argument, and have
no wish to become involved, but I take it you will be sending a copy
of the above paragraph to Derek, with 'Blakemore' replaced by 'Smart'.
After Derek famously slagged off a veteran, I know you'd want to
remain consistent.

For all I know you could typing that out on a laptop with a wireless modem and
sitting on a rock where the World Trade Center used to be.

Exactly. It wouldn't just "give him bad arthritis"....

Wrong. Team six. And he was never used *as* a sniper. He was a trained
sniper, but they never used him as such during his time there. Is that so
hard to understand?

ROFLMAO! You've heard the "lost in a fire" story too, huh? Then why do I
have a scan of Tom's DD-214? Even if it *was* lost in a fire at his home,
it's easy enough to replace from Govt. records. Or are you being
deliberately dumb?
Let's see...you've heard it verbally from Tom. I've heard it verbally from
both a retired SEAL Capt and the US Navy PR office, and seen his DD-214.
Want me to put you in contact with them? Or are you still chicken-shit?

As opposed to just giving him bad arthritis? :) Hell, that was straight
from Tom!

...and the fact that you won't look at the evidence I've put in front of
you? :)
