Hello There,

Is anyone out there using S3 Trio 3D/2X (86C368) AGP card at 1280x1024 - 24
bit colour depth? (If yes, can you please share your XF86Config file with
me?)

Monitor kind of flickers when I try to move around windows in
XFree86-4.2.0/KDE 3.0. No such problems while at 1024x768 - 24 bit colour
depth. It works kind of fine in 1280x1024 - 16 bit colour (rather not as
bad as 24 bit colour)

I thought it had 8 MB Video Ram, that's what the guy at the shop said and
sold it to me, I may be wrong though. Here is the relevant line from
XFree86 log file:
(--) S3VIRGE(0): videoram: 4096k (plus 4096k off-screen)

This thing doesn't change even when I specify "VideoRam 8192" in
XF86Config-4 file under Device section. Is there a way to force it use the
"4096k off-screen" to on-screen :-)

This is a disastrous experience and I kind of given up hope after the ATI
Radeon 7000 card could not work properly at 1280x1024 (please refer my
other thread with title "ATI Radeon VE QY (AGP) issue with Sony monitor on
XFree86 4.2.0")

<rant>
Am I too dumb to understand that nVidia are the ONLY cards that support
1280x1024 at 24 bit colour depth properly under XFree86? and nVidia in
hardware == Microsoft in os/software? (ie, complete 100% Monopoly)
</rant>

While I let my ATI Radeon 7000 card rest in peace, I am willing to sacrifice
even this S3 card (should there be no solution for my requirements), for
one last attempt to find a card (once again a non nVidia if possible) that
will support 1280x1024 at 85 Hz with 24 bit colour depth under XFree86
(preferably 4.x). Can you please please please suggest/recommend a card
which might just meet my requirements (ie vanilla KDE 3.x on XFree86)? I
here by promise not to take it up with anyone if it doesn't. At least I
will feel better as I consulted some of the best technical/helpful
people/forum around.

I am sorry if I sound too sad/desperate, but I couldn't help myself, after 2
failures. After all I should give up my hope in finding a non nVidia card,
and just pay nVidia TAX to meet my requirements.

My computer configuration is:
AMD 1200 MHz / MSI K7 Master board
512 MB RAM
Sony CPD-G400 monitor (it can easy do 1280x1024/1600x1200 etc at 85 Hz)

Anyway thanks for your time, and great if you could help.
