Outlook XP and Windows XP SSL

Yes the first email was sent ok because I didnt have the
patch. I installed the first service pack which did not
take very long at all. Then when I tried to send an
email it crashed. I am using port 587 with SSL.

Try connecting to port 25 rather than 587. It appears from your logs that
your server supports STARTTLS, which is like SSL but done on the standard
SMTP port (25). Prior to SP-1, Outlook only used STARTTLS (which is the
Internet standard way to make a secure SMTP connection) and didn't use SSL
(which is non-standard). In SP-1 we changed how we handled the SSL
checkbox. If you specify port 25, we'll first try using STARTTLS on that
port but switch to trying SSL on port 25 if that fails. If you specify
something other than port 25, we'll start by trying SSL and switching to
STARTTLS if that fails. It may be that the latter code does not work
properly and you're not switching to STARTTLS...
