German Firm Probes Final World Trade Center Deals
By Erik Kirschbaum

PIRMASENS, Germany (Reuters) - German computer experts are working
round the clock to unlock the truth behind an unexplained surge in
financial transactions made just before two hijacked planes crashed
into New York's World Trade Center on September 11.

Were criminals responsible for the sharp rise in credit card
transactions that moved through some computer systems at the WTC
shortly before the planes hit the twin towers?

Or was it coincidence that unusually large sums of money, perhaps
more than $100 million, were rushed through the computers as the
disaster unfolded?

A world leader in retrieving data, German-based firm Convar is trying
to answer those questions and help credit card companies,
telecommunications firms and accountants in New York recover their
records from computer hard drives that have been partially damaged by
fire, water or fine dust.

Using a pioneering laser scanning technology to find data on damaged
computer hard drives and main frames found in the rubble of the World
Trade Center and other nearby collapsed buildings, Convar has
recovered information from 32 computers that support assumptions of
dirty doomsday dealings.

``The suspicion is that inside information about the attack was used
to send financial transaction commands and authorizations in the
belief that amid all the chaos the criminals would have, at the very
least, a good head start,'' said Convar director Peter Henschel.

``Of course it is also possible that there were perfectly legitimate
reasons for the unusual rise in business volume,'' he told Reuters in
an interview.

PROFITING FROM DISASTER?

``It could turn out that Americans went on an absolute shopping binge
on that Tuesday morning. But at this point there are many
transactions that cannot be accounted for,'' Henschel said.

``Not only the volume but the size of the transactions was far higher
than usual for a day like that. There is a suspicion that these were
possibly planned to take advantage of the chaos.''

Nearly 3,300 people were killed in the attacks that destroyed the
World Trade Center.

Some 30,000 people in the buildings, symbols of America's financial
might, were able to escape between the time the planes crashed and
about an hour later when they collapsed -- even though many of the
unmanned computers continued working.

The United States blames the al Qaeda group led by Saudi-born Osama
bin Laden (news - web sites) for the attack and has since waged war
on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan (news - web sites) that
sheltered them.

ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE OF ATTACK?

There are several data retrieval companies in the United States and
Europe, but Convar said it has won the lion's share of the contracts
from the World Trade Center because of its laser scanning technology.

Convar developed the laser scanner two years ago that made it
possible to retrieve data from badly damaged computers.

With a staff of 30 in its high-security facility in Pirmasens near
the French border, the firm has worked with the U.S. armed forces in
Germany as well as German federal police for the last 15 years.

Its offices in Pirmasens, a town of 36,000 still suffering from the
departure of some 4,000 American soldiers stationed here during the
Cold War, are closely guarded behind high fences and monitored by
dozens of security cameras.

Inside the building, an endless series of code-operated door locks
keeps unwelcome visitors away. In the center of the facility is a 120
square meter (1,292 square foot), dust-free ''clean room'' where the
damaged computer drives are coaxed back to life.

Citing client privacy, Henschel declined to say which companies
Convar is working for, or provide details about the data retrieved so
far. But he said the raw material, up to 40 gigabytes per computer
hard drive, is sent immediately by satellite or courier back to New
York.

MONEY TRAIL

Richard Wagner, a data retrieval expert at the company, said illegal
transfers of more than $100 million might have been made immediately
before and during the disaster.

``There is a suspicion that some people had advance knowledge of the
approximate time of the plane crashes in order to move out amounts
exceeding $100 million,'' Wagner said. ``They thought that the
records of their transactions could not be traced after the main
frames were destroyed.''

The companies are paying between $20,000 and $30,000 for each
computer recovered, Henschel said.

The high recovery costs are one reason why only a limited number of
hard drives are being examined. Convar has turned down a request by
one British newspaper to try to recover personal last hour e-mails
sent by someone trapped in the doomed building.

Henschel said the companies in the United States were working
together with the FBI (news - web sites) to piece together what
happened on September 11 and that he was confident the destination of
the dubious transactions would one day be tracked down.

``We have been quite surprised that so many of the hard drives were
in good enough shape to retrieve the data,'' he said.

``The contamination rate is high. The fine dust that was everywhere
in the area got pressed under high pressure into the drives. But
we've still been able to retrieve 100 percent of the data on most of
the drives we've received.

``We're helping them find out what happened to the computers on
September 11 as quickly as possible. I'm sure that one day they will
know what happened to the money.''

According to
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40898-2001Dec13.html:
"The U.S. government has provided few details about the origins of the
tape, except to say that it was found in a private home in the Afghan
city of Jalalabad, and that it records a mid-November bin Laden-led
meeting in Kandahar."

According to
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41112-2001Dec13.html:
"The video, which was found in a house in Jalalabad, Afghanistan,
carries a date stamp of Nov. 9, officials said."

However, according to the transcript released
[http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Dec2001/d20011213ubl.pdf]:
The 'visiting shaykh' speaks of a 'full moon' on his way to see OBL, and
also of 'this holy month of Ramadan'.

This would date the video as mid-Ramadan (about the end of November or
even early December}.

According to
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A37621-2001Dec13.html:
"White House press secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters that President
Bush was told about the tape on Nov. 29 and saw portions of it the next
day."

The dates are confused and if the video was actually made at the end of
November, it would mean the video was shot in Kandahar, moved to a
private residence in Jalalbad and landed in the hands of the Americans
almost immediately, transcribed and presented to G Bush on 30 November
2001. G Bush being made aware of the tape on 29 November 2001.

According to
[http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/12/13/ret.bin.laden.videotape/index.html]:
They said they found the videotape in a private residence in Jalalabad,
although they cautioned the nature of its discovery was more
complicated.

One should not only be cautious about the 'nature of its discovery' but
about its content.

This report gives associations with the Iran-Contras deals (Nicaragua),
where drug trafficing not only was tolerated, but also used in a political
game.

As the conclusion goes:

"As Afghan warlords fight one another in Kandahar for the spoils, we still
don't know what private arrangements were made by the U.S. to create its

Heroin's Ugly Role In Afghanistan

By Pete Hamill

We've seen the images of kids flying kites again in Kabul, and brave
women baring their faces, and shopkeepers offering satellite dishes made
from tin cans. We've seen the statesmen in Germany smiling as they named
an interim government. We've seen the bombing of Tora Bora and the white
flags of surrender in Kandahar. We've heard hourly bulletins about the
search for Mullah Omar and Osama Bin Laden.

But nobody yet has used the one word that is crucial to understanding
Afghanistan.

The word is heroin.

Afghan fighter against the Taliban guards in Spinboldak, across the
border from Pakistan, yesterday.
The various warlords now sporadically killing one another in different
parts of the country - and on the streets of Kandahar - are almost
certainly fighting to control the heroin racket. Forget about such
marvelous abstractions as freedom, liberty and democracy. The true goal
is far more familiar to those of us who have lived in a major heroin
market for five decades. They're killing for the same reasons that mob
families have killed for two generations: to control the supply of
smack.

The great prize for the warlords is supposed to be hidden in those
endless networks of caves in the north and west of the ruined country.
According to the UN, the British Home Office and the Drug Enforcement
Administration, some of it is pure morphine base. Some has been
processed by Afghan labs into heroin. Tons of hashish are there, too,
say the experts, ready to flood the postwar domestic market.

Up to 100-Pound Busts

Nobody is certain. So far, says Steven Casteel, the DEA's assistant
administrator for intelligence, seizures have been small, between 40 and
100 pounds. Over the weekend, he said of the Taliban: "They are not
dumb. This is their savings account, and for that reason obviously a lot
of them have made every effort to move that savings account to a safe
haven outside the country."

But even Casteel is uncertain about the basic information. Some of the
stockpile might have been destroyed by American bombs aimed at Afghan
and Arab fighters. Some must await the end of the shooting war.

Certainly, the sheer numbers of potential profits reduce the $25 million
reward for Bin Laden to tip money. Last year, the State Department
estimated that the Afghan crop was 3,656 metric tons, which was 72% of
the world's supply (Myanmar/Burma was a distant second.) The United
Nations estimated in 1999 that the value of the Afghan opium crop was
$265 million as it left the poppy farms, and that the Taliban extracted
from that sum about $40 million in taxes. A recent BBC report by Richard
Davenport-Hines stated that the profit margin for Afghan drug
traffickers is about 300%. We are talking here of potential profits in
the billions.

Stashing it Away

Last year, under pressure from UN development agencies, the Taliban
banned the growing of poppies. They actually took some steps to enforce
the ban, but first permitted the creation of a strategic reserve. They
stashed many tons of drugs in caves in northern and western Afghanistan.
The intent was clear: to supply the outside world while keeping prices
at a high level.

But in the late summer of this year, the puritanical students of Mullah
Omar made a big shift. On Sept. 2, the Voice of Shariat - run by the
Taliban - announced that the ban on poppy growing was over. This might
have been because Mullah Omar and his fellow holy men had been tipped
about what would happen nine days later. We won't know for many months.
But there was a practical short-term reason for the lifting of the ban.
The planting season for poppy farmers would begin in late September and
they needed to buy seeds.

Meanwhile, through the years of Taliban domination, the drug trade
flourished. Their rivals, the heroic freedom fighters of the Northern
Alliance, had a piece of the action. On some levels, the exchange was
simple: You give us guns and we'll give you heroin. Trucks arrived with
food, dropped off their humanitarian cargoes, and nobody asked what
might be hidden in wheel casings when the vehicles left Afghanistan.
Certainly, by all reports, every border was corrupt.

Millions of Addicts

In spite of the war, smuggling routes still exist. One western route
drives into Iran, which has 3 million heroin addicts of its own among a
population of 60 million. From Iran, after local markets are served, the
cargo is eventually dispersed into Turkey, Europe and the United States.
Iran says it has lost 15,000 dead soldiers and policemen trying to stop
the Afghan drug trade, an additional reason for its fierce opposition to
the Taliban regime. The smuggling continues.

The southern route pushes into Pakistan, which also contains an
estimated 3 million addicts in its cities and refugee camps (with twice
the population of Iran). Supplies of morphine base and refined heroin
are often taken to ships operating out of Karachi on the Arabian Sea for
movement to the West. Corruption is general, on high levels and low.

The northern route moves easily through the Central Asian republics -
with our ally, Tajikistan, a virtual narcorepublic. The shipments are
often guided by Muslim gangsters from Chechnya toward Kosovo-Albanian
syndicates, or to the hard men of the Russian Mafia. In turn, according
to the Drug Enforcement Administration, heroin passes through Bulgaria,
the Czech Republic, Romania or Hungary on its way to the lucrative
markets of the West, including America.

80% From Afghanistan

Through these complicated, shifting routes, much Afghan heroin finds its
way to the drug supermarkets of Amsterdam, where the DEA says it is
auctioned among British, Irish, Israeli, Turkish, Nigerian and Kurdish
gangsters. By all accounts, heroin addiction is spreading in Europe,
with 80% of the supply traced by drug agents to Afghanistan. And, of
course, New York gets it share.

So far, we've heard no reports of the bombing of existing poppy fields
in Kandahar or Helmand provinces. We haven't heard about a single major
drug seizure in opium storage caves around Darunta, Bhesud or anywhere
else. No significant drug busts have been made along Afghanistan's
porous borders.

All of which creates a ripening odor. As Afghan warlords fight one
another in Kandahar for the spoils, we still don't know what private
arrangements were made by the U.S. to create its anti-Taliban alliance.
We certainly don't know if the continuity of the heroin trade was part
of the deal. If it was, we will live with the terrible exports of
Afghanistan long after Osama Bin Laden and Mullah Omar are tossed into
the rubbish heap of history.

Bin Laden, Terrorist Monster: Take Two!
by Jared Israel
[9 October 2001]
=======================================

In 'US Army Gets Secret Advice from Hollywood,' the
BBC (British Broadcasting Company) notes that:

"American intelligence specialists are reported to
have 'secretly' sought advice on handling terrorist
attacks from Hollywood film-makers."

Among said film-makers is Steven E De Souza, the
screenwriter for the movie 'Die Hard,' whose plot
deals with terrorists trying to destroy a big city
skyscraper.

The goal of this interaction?

"In particular...the entertainment industry can offer
[the Army] expertise in understanding plot and
character, as well as advice on scenario training."

Have the black ops boys by any chance lent their
script doctors to Osama bin Laden?

Consider the following.

Bin Laden was interviewed September 28th by a
pro-Taliban newspaper. Here's a summary:

"In an interview with 'Ummat' -- a publication
sympathetic to Afghanistan's ruling Taliban -- bin
Laden said both he and al Qaida had 'nothing to do
with the terrorist attacks in America' and that
'hard-line Jewish organizations might be involved.'

"Ummat said it sent questions to bin Laden through
Taliban officials, and received written responses. Bin
Laden reportedly said in his replies that dozens of
terrorists organizations from countries like Israel,
Russia, India and Serbia could be responsible for the
attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon that
left over 6,000 people dead or missing.

He also insisted that al Qaida does not consider the
United States its enemy." ('United Press
International,' 28 September 28, 2001, Friday)

This interview was seized on by those opposed to
bombing Afghanistan. They noted that terrorists always
take credit for their murders. Indeed, the whole point
of terror is to take credit. How else can the
terrorists intimidate the target group and force them
to flee, give up, change their political allegience or
make concessions to terrorist demands?

Since bin Laden wasn't taking credit, how, asked
critics, could anybody be sure he was behind the WTC
attacks? And if nobody could be certain he was behind
the attacks why was the U.S. so anxious to
'counter'attack against Afghanistan?

Now bin Laden has issued a speech which he recorded on
videotape. This speech has been broadcast on TV.
Transcripts have been published in major newspapers.
His picture is on the front page of the 'NY Times,'
holding a microphone, looking like a maniacal crooner.

This is in itself remarkable. As opponents of the NATO
bombing of Yugoslavia and the U.S.-supported, Kosovo
Liberation Army attacks on that country will testify,
it is virtually impossible for people critical of U.S.
foreign policy to get their views presented in major
newspapers or on TV in the U.S.

But here is bin Laden, front page and prime time.

And mind you, he's no longer saying, "Russia, India,
Serbia and Israel" did it, or "America is not the
enemy." Rather, his expressed views have altered:

"God Almighty hit the United States at its most
vulnerable spot. He destroyed its greatest buildings.
Praise be to God. Here is the United States. It was
filled with terror from its north to its south and
from its east to its west. Praise be to God...

"But if the sword falls on the United States after 80
years, hypocrisy raises its head lamenting the deaths
of these killers who tampered with the blood, honour,
and holy places of the Muslims.

". When Almighty God rendered successful a convoy of
Muslims, the vanguards of Islam, He allowed them to
destroy the United States. I ask God Almighty to
elevate their status and grant them Paradise." (1)

Quite a change.

The 'Times' commented:

"Within hours of the first American bombs dropping on
Afghanistan, the world's most wanted man, Osama bin
laden, appeared in a videotape broadcast, worldwide in
which he taunted the United States and celebrated the
Sept 11 terrorist attacks. (Our emphasis)

Allow me to remind you, Osama bin Laden's tape was not
broadcast worldwide by Osama bin Laden, nor by chance.
Rather, it was broadcast worldwide by the mainstream
mass media, that is, by the conscious effort of bin
Laden's supposed enemies.

The 'Times' described Mr. bin Laden's performance as
"an evident attempt to rally the entire Islamic world
against the United States."

I beg to differ.

By providing this videotape at this time, bin Laden
has given the mass media an effective and timely
argument to justify bombing Afghanistan and perhaps
other countries.

The other day the British government published a
document purporting to prove bin laden was behind
9-11. In fact, the document proved no such thing.
Rather, it listed some horrific crimes in which he was
involved, or probably involved, prior to 9-11, and it
repeated various violent things he purportedly said.
This might constitute negative character evidence at a
trial, but it offers no proof that he was behind 9-11.

Having for days promised Great Revelations, and having
finally produced something that would flunk an exam in
First Semester Criminal Law in any U.S. Law School,
the U.S. and British governments were in a bad spot.

They wanted to bomb Afghanistan - but why? Many
people, or at least those whose critical faculties are
able to overcome the current political atmosphere in
the U.S. and Britain, would like to know, when bombing
other countries, whether it is necessary and
appropriate.

Bombing Afghanistan because bin Laden masterminded
9-11 is a stretch for three reasons:

It violates the entire fabric of international law,
for instance the Helsinki Final Act and the United
Nations Charter. International Law denies the U.S. and
British governments the right to bomb other countries
even if they feel they have a good reason. (Other
countries might feel they have a good reason to do
likewise to the U.S. and Britain, and the U.S.
government would not like that.)

It is not clear how the punishment (bombing
Afghanistan) would fit the crime, since whereas
millions of ordinary people in Afghanistan would be
bound to suffer, and surely many would die, bin Laden
and the Taliban leaders might not. Indeed, official
British/US plans call for creating a new "government"
in Afghanistan largely made up of - the Taliban (2)

And obviously bombing would encourage violent
reprisals and/or create a climate where secret
government agencies could stage phony terrorist
attacks (often called 'provocations') to justify
further military action overseas.
That is what is wrong with bombing Afghanistan if the
U.S. and British governments had proven that bin Laden
was responsible for 9-11.

But bombing Afghanistan despite the U.S. and British
governments having provided no hard evidence that bin
Laden was behind 9-11 is simply insane. Unless, of
course, the U.S. and British governments have a
purpose entirely separate from the publicly stated one
of taking revenge for 9-11. (3)

By issuing this videotape, bin Laden has accomplished
the following:

He has provided a harsh verbal "taunt" (the 'Times'
word) which can be read, and has been read and
listened to, by millions of people in the NATO
countries and which has thereby created a mass
emotional basis for bombing. Not because bin Laden's
taunt justifies U.S. military attacks but because it
a) allows demagogues to say, "He has confessed! We
must retaliate!" while encouraging ordinary people to
feel less upset about attacking faraway countries.

People say: "We've got to do something about that
bastard, don't we?" and "We have to retaliate in some
way." That is the refrain I hear from many quarters.
One friend of mine wanted to know just one thing: "Do
you think he's a monster or not?" To which I answered,
"Yeah, he's a monster. But that has nothing to do with
bombing Afghanistan." It's a hard argument to make
given the passions which bin Laden's video has
conveniently further inflamed.

Bin Laden mixes Islamist fanaticism and callous glee
over the suffering of Americans, on the one hand, with
valid criticisms of the U.S. government, on the other.
Among the valid statements: he accuses the US of being
responsible for the deaths of a million Iraqi children
through its insistence on imposing horrific economic
sanctions on Iraq. This is a very extreme charge, of
course, but it also happens to be true, as admitted by
one of the responsible parties, former Secretary of
State, Madeline Albright. (4) (At the time Albright
made her admission, the number of dead children was
estimated at 500,000.)

Since bin Laden utters vicious, Islamist ravings and
equates ordinary Americans with the U.S. government,
on the one hand, but mixes this with valid criticisms,
on the other, his video creates an atmosphere of
hostility towards views critical of U.S. foreign
policy because now, in addition to challenging the
propaganda apparatus of the U.S. government and its
supporting media, we bear the burden of "sounding like
bin Laden," whom we happen to loathe.

Consider this example: Emperor's Clothes has been
fighting Islamist and secessionist terrorism for over
two years. We have proven, from evidence available in
the mass media, that the U.S. government has been
intimately involved, often covertly, in creating and
sponsoring terrorist organizations, especially in the
Balkans. (7) Our Website has hundreds of pages of
texts attacking this terrible union. Ironically, bin
Laden and related Islamist terrorists have been
involved on the U.S. side, backing local terrorists in
Kosovo, Bosnia and Macedonia. (8)

But today we received an email accusing us of
supporting Islamist terrorism because we attack U.S.
government arrogance and violence - and after all,
said this person, so does bin Laden!

At the same time, by linking Islamist terrorist
ravings with valid criticisms, the bin Laden video
encourages those who hate US foreign policy to view
the bin Laden monster as some kind of hero.

Never mind that he helped the CIA turn Afghanistan
into a living hell. Never mind that he and his
Mujahedeen, who were praised by Ronald Reagan as
"freedom fighters," who were paid billions by the CIA
(5), would execute school teachers because obviously
every teacher in a secular school had to be a
communist - why else would anyone teach a little girl
to read?

Never mind that his Taliban monsters have made it a
crime for male surgeons to operate on women. (One of
our readers, an Afghan surgeon now living in the U.S.,
reports that he was performing a stomach operation on
a woman when the Taliban seized Kabul. He was
literally forced to leave the operating room and was
arrested for treating a female patient. The patient
was left unconscious, stomach cut wide open, on the
operating table.)
In his 28 September interview, bin Laden is quoted as
follows:

"'I can go from Indonesia to Algeria, Kabul to
Chechnya, Bosnia to Sudan, and Burma to Kashmir," he
said. "This is not a question of my survival. This is
the question of the survival of jihad (holy war).
Wherever required, I will be there.'"

This amounts to a confession that bin Laden has been
involved with the very terrorists that the U.S. has
sponsored, for example in Chechnya, Bosnia, Macedonia,
Algeria, and Indonesia, and also, with the KLA whom
the U.S. government has sponsored in attacking Serbia.
(6)

This man is no enemy of oppression. This is terribly
distorted person who tries to distort others in his
image, a spoiled billionaire who exploits the misery
of angry people to lure them into the fascistic
'solution' of his murderous Islamist fundamentalism.

Wouldn't the U.S. government love it if some young
people who hate the bombing of Afghanistan were to
elevate this thug into some kind of hero? Such people
would discredit themselves and any valid criticisms
they had of the status quo and - as we have seen time
and again - they could then easily be used by the CIA,
as followers of bin Laden have been used to attack
secular governments from Algeria to Yugoslavia to
Afghanistan.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
PERFECT TIMING
+ + + + + + + + ++ + + +

The 'N.Y. Times' notes:

"[The tape] appeared to have been carefully prepared
so as to have the maximum effect the moment American
military operations against Mr. bin Laden and the
Taliban rulers of Afghanistan began."

Very true. A cynic might say that in constructing the
storyline of a Hollywood blockbuster it is necessary
to have the terrorist villain goad and taunt (and
perhaps treacherously assault) the All-American hero
several times before the hero comes back to smash the
villain (or, in this case, smash the country where the
villain resides.)

If the villain does not verbally (and perhaps
physically) abuse the All-American hero, then when the
hero crushes the villain (or the country where the
villain resides) the audience might not cheer; it
might look askance; it might view the hero as a bully
and a monster himself.
