Few zoos in the entire world deserve to sit in the shadow of the
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, on Gates Pass Road east of Tucson. It's
more a zoo than museum, yet intensely educational about all aspects of the
flora and fauna of the neighboring states of Arizona, US and Sonora,
Mexico. The turtle fauna of that region is pretty sparse (just the desert
tortoise, the yellow and Sonora mud turtles, and the (introduced)
softshell), but the incredible diversity of lizards and snakes, as well as
mammals and birds, more than makes up for it, and the Museum has an
abundance of exhibits of everything from jaguars (which are still native
to Arizona) and otters to nocturnal insects, a prairie dog town, a
walk-through hummingbird enclosure, a building devoted to reptiles and
amphibians, etc, etc, all presented in a fashion that is far more
interesting than at a typical zoo (and most of those are just fine).
Don't miss it, even if it's the only thing you do when you're in Tucson.
It's world-famous for very good reason.

I agree with Sean about the Museum. Additionally, you could go to a couple
really cool herp shops in Tucson, and one in Phoenix, as you pass through.
These are off of the top of my head, but:

1. Tropical Kingdom? on Prince Road in Tucson.
2. Reptile Specialties? on Broadway in Tucson.
3. Arizona Reptile (something) in one of the suburbs of Phoenix, Mesa, I
think.

The names are close. The first two are in the Tucson phone book and have
pretty good selections of herps. The third one is in the Phoenix phone book
and also has a good selection. Someone else here could probably help. I'm
in japan now, but was in Arizona a few times in the last couple years.

I have shopped in Arizona Reptile last year (I think that is the name), and
it is in Mesa, on Broadway, I think. very clean, but not that cheap. The
reptile all looked nice, though. I used to buy mice from them.

I'll second that about AZ Reptile Center. Nice to look but too pricey.
No good competition for a city of this size so that sucks.
