The 1st day of the Gregorian Calendar i.e., 1st of January is a
religious holiday for the Christians all over the world. The belief is
that Jesus Christ was crucified 1996 yrs ago. This calendar was originally
called Julian Calender. As it had errors, it was corrected by the Vaticans
in the 15th century and named it after the then Pope Gregory. Since then,
it was a tradition to use the abbreviation AD after the numerical year,
like 1757 AD. The amplification of this abbreviation in latin language is
"Ana Dominica" which means "after thy Lord (Jesus)". Would it be wrong
to say that "Happy New Year" is a Christian compliment from the above
historical point of view ?

In Bngladesh, we have the tradition to use the three calendars, Bangla,
Islamic and Gregorian. We have inherited the use of Gregorian calendar
from the British Colonial rule. As such, its use in the administration is
extensive. Without it, the banking, the trade will be difficult as this is
the only acceptable one.

Pahela Baishakh, the 1st day of Bangla Calendar is a official holiday
in Bngladesh. It is observed by people of all walks of life. Should we
BDis not exchange greetings like A HAPPY NEW YEAR! on this day ?
