HipCrime has gone too far. He has turned entire newsgroups (such as this
one) unusable with his cancels and supersedes. He has done this with near
impunity. The time has come to track down HipCrime, unmask him, and shut
him down. Yes, he may easily switch ISPs, but this will slow him down,
and it will send a message to him and the rest of the world that his
behavior will not be tolerated. Also, unmasking him will end the
protection that his anonymity gives him. Earlier in the 1990s, people
went to great lengths to shut down cancelbots and cancellers such as the
CancelBunny, the pseudosite cancels, Crusader, etc. We should treat
HipCrime the same way as we treated these other instances. Tracking down
and shutting down HipCrime will be just as difficult as tracking down and
shutting down those instances above. It will require things like
monitoring the timing and propagation of the cancels from multiple
locations. It will require the cooperation of many different newsadmins
and Usenet users. We know HipCrime's ISP, but we don't currently have any
proof that these supersedes are coming from HipCrime. It will be
difficult to do this. It will be even more difficult to find HipCrime's
identity in real life.

The hunt for HipCrime has begun!

unusable by those who know how that key functions.

You sure have your history screwed up. None were ever tracked down.
Posting locations were shut down. Look at how much effort people in
alt.religion.scientology have put forth to trace sporgeries and scientology
text postings. Nobody has been tracked down. Again, only posting
locations were shut down. a.r.s has had it's share of every type
of action imaginable for over 4 years now.

Does your mother know you are doing this, naughty boy?
The hunter frequently becomes the prey. I doubt that
your family would like that.

#The hunt for HipCrime has begun!

FWIW, Ian Hayes has been hunting him (unsucessfully) for
well over 2 years. It isn't going to happen.

Spend an extra 30-60 seconds looking at the path for likely injection
point and using that instead.

Travis, you have found your "One Great True Quest". Go now, find the
"Holy Grail" of the criminal known as "Hipcrime" and bring him to
Usenet Justice. May the Force be with You.

Actually, I don't think HipCrime counts as the "Holy Grail" in this case.
I'm not sure what the "Holy Grail" was. Was it Crusader, the pseudosite
cancellers, or the CancelBunny? But still, HipCrime is quite a pain in
the ass. He needs to be larted very badly.

I can't see the supersedes where I am. However, it is still quite
annoying when nearly all the threads in a newsgroup just disappear (that
is, are superseded), and any new posts which one posts disappear a day or
two after they are posted.

He's not the most dangerous individual on the Usenet - That's Tom Saylor.
The second most dangerous entity on the Usenet is the CancelBunny, because
its purpose and design is for censorship, not indiscriminate cancelling of
everything. However, the CancelBunny has been checked. Its accounts are
killed just as soon as it starts spewing cancels. On the other hand,
HipCrime has been able to cancel with impunity up to now. The time has
come to lart HipCrime in the side of the head with a 2x4.

But then, why should we treat DipSlime any different than we treated the

One way to handle him is not read on weekend. By Sunday night,
whatever he did was all cleaned up and the group was okay-fine.

It's personal. Everybody needs their own questing beast. Mine
was Andrew Chandler for a while, but what do you do once you've
slain the beast?

Yes, I know what "Holy Grail" refers to. However, I think of "Monty
Python and the Holy Grail", not "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?" when
I hear the words "Holy Grail".

Well, considering that he also did a rogue cancelling around Sunday in
NANAU. You can't just ignore or killfile cancels. Well, you can filter
them out or not honor any cancels altogether, but this is only an option
if you are your own newsadmin.

I don't care for Monty Python, and I doubted that you would have
ever watched "The Silver Chalice" (1954) staring Paul Newman.

You can also choose an ISP or news-service that does the things
you want.

If you had read about King Arthur's legend, then you would've grokked
what I was insinuating. As it is, you seem more like a "Bored of the
Rings" kind of fellow.
Now say hello to my killfile for two weeks, *plonk*

For some reasons, the server I read from didn't show a trace of the
stuff you're talking about.

Why don't you email HipCrime and try to feed him your version of
reality? It's a fun parlor game played by many people.

Yeah, but I can't because the ISP I used isn't my choice. I wasn't the
person who called up the ISP for an Internet connection in the first
place.
